“Good base for Tongariro Crossing”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

There is little reason to stay at National Park apart from proximity to the start of the Tongariro Crossing. But if you do have to, this is a good place to stay. Not cheap (nothing is in the area), basic but gradually being renovated and very clean and quiet, with a particularly comfortable bed and excellent bedding - and a flat screen TV! Make sure you bring food - there is nothing available to speak of, but the Lodge does do meals ( you need to pre-book).

Room Tip: All pretty much the same!

We arrived after a day driving and on checking in the owner, Lorraine, said "get back in your car NOW and drive up Mount Ruapehu because it won't be there in the morning!". She was absolutely right. The next day it was raining cats and dogs and we couldn't see 100 metres yet alone the volcano we had come to see. So top marks. If she hadn't have bullied us (in the nicest possible way) we would have missed what we had come to see.

We actually did get straight back in the car and enjoyed the experience.

As a keen birdwatcher I was keen to see the very rare (fewer than 100 in the world) Blue Duck which is found in this area. Lorraine phoned up the local "Birdy" person and gave me very exact instructions where I might find one. Hey, this is someone who knows the meaning of looking after her guest. She cares.

Our room was a good size (we decided to sort out all four suitcases and had room to spare). It was comfortable and the linen was good quality. The kitchen facilities are good and there is a real table and chairs - not eating on your lap like some motels. The separate laundrette was useful. Everything was scrupulously clean.

We were only here one night, but can thoroughly recommend it.

The Tongariro Crossing is a very challenging hike. But we were very glad we stayed at the Adventure Travel Lodge. Ron and Lorraine are great hosts and they love what they do and where they live. They are very knowledgable about the hiking. Their package that provides you with breakfast, lunch and dinner is a good deal. The rooms are very basic but that is all you need. And there is a spa tub to soak your weary bones and feet in after the hike.

We scheduled two nights here along with plans to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing! We had a wonderful experience. Lorraine and her husband think of everything! After getting settled in our room, she met with us to plan our whole agenda for the trek the next day: wake-up time, breakfast, lunch and dinner choices, double-checked out our gear so we would have a great hiking experience
She then suggested three or four options to fill out our afternoon of the eve of our hike. We chose the two hour loop hike to Taranaki Falls! Great choice!
They served up a great breakfast before delivering us to the trailhead and promptly arriving at the stated time after the magnificent hike. Unfortunately with the seismic activity our crossing trip ended up being a trip to Emerald Lakes and back. This could not be helped as the trail was closed beyond this point by park personnel. Dinner with the day's hikers was a tremendous experience as we were able to share our individual experiences. After breakfast the next day, they sent us on our way with more ideas to enjoy their area! They are proud ambassadors of their country and central NZ.
This area is known for its skiing but please note that there is plenty to do in the other seasons! We loved our stay at Adventure Lodge and Motel.

2 star serviced appartment style cabins , 3/10.
The cabin was a converted demountable but servicable. Simple functional decor and furnishings.
Kitchenette , Futon , Dinning table , Shower / Toilet , Queen bed in a seperate room. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Walls however were paper thin and the floor creaked when ever you moved.
When we arrived we were told the crossing was closed due to volcanic activity and poor weather , so they would not (and did not) take us to do the hike (part of the package we were staying for). When we went to the trail head ourselves the weather was poor but the track was open and other were doing the crossing even with the low visability. If we had been contacted before check in we would have altered our plans to try on another day (other hotels on our trip did call to advise of conditions which would effect the purpose of us staying in the area , so we could alter our plans accordingly).
My travelling companions (both ladies) believed that the proprieters made a judgement on our capacity to do the hike before giving the (erronious) advice ?
We might have encountered them on a bad day ? Still displeasing.

The extent of Ron and Lorraine's knowledge and love of the area is exceptional and immensely helpful to visitors. We didn't make the crossing due to weather, but they advised other walks that more than made up for our disappointment at missing on the walk we intended. And ultimately, their advice saved us a right epic on the crossing as some folk must have had that day (the rain and wind were Biblical!)

The accommodation is basic (no tea and coffee etc in rooms, shared - though cubicled - showers and toilets), but it's perfect for what you need when out walking. Everywhere was exceptionally clean and we slept like logs.

Breakfast is fab and you MUST have Ron's steak - literally the best, ever! He managed four steaks, all on time, each cooked differently, but each to perfection. Better than any restaurant.

Would definitely come back here were we to visit NZ again.

It is disappointing not to be able to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing but we do have some wonderful hikes in the park and I really do enjoy the Tama Lake Hike, We hope to see you back again to do the Alpine Crossing.

We were due to spend two nights here, doing the Tongariro Crossing walk on our full day, but unfortunately the weather (wind and rain) intervened. Lorraine, the owner, was fantastic in giving us various options for shorter walks in what would have been miserable conditions, and also giving us the choice to check out early and move on (just paying for 1 night B&B). With regret we took the latter option, as conditions were so poor for walking and we'd have seen none of the volcanoes through the dense cloud! I doubt many proprietors would be so candid and flexible to allow you to leave early - we were very impressed! We were in a double room in the lodge, which was fine, and the shared bathroom was spacious and clean. The lounge is very cosy and our cooked breakfast in the morning was really nice too. The Tongariro Crossing package was excellent value given the meals included - we were just sad not to be able to take advantage of it! Recommended.
