We were here at the end of September with our 12 and 14 year old kids for our first experience in the snow. The views on the drive to both Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields are amazing, the roads very winding, but our subaru forrester made it with ease. The beginner areas were closed for skiing as much of the snow had been washed away by heavy rain, but we still got to play in the snow at Whakapapa and try out skiing at Turoa. I would definitely recommend getting local knowledge on the weather and taking the ski lift for the wonderful views of snowy mountains. As Lord of the Rings fans, we also enjoyed seeing the picturesque 'Mt Doom' (Mt Ngaurahoe).

After doing a couple of smaller walks in the park we decided to get the site seeing lift ticket to go up since it was such a clear day. Everyone said it was freezing at the top, and it did get a bit chilly, but we didn't need all of our layers at the top (but better safe than sorry!) The views from the lift were pretty awesome and at the restaurant they were even better. We had a mulled wine and found a good seat outside...we were able to see Taranaki looming in the distance it was so clear, that was pretty amazing.

This was my first time up on Turoa and my first time snowboarding. We went at the start of September, on a Monday/Tuesday, and the weather was great. I did think that being mid-week it would be quieter, but it was still very busy. We got there at 8:50 am and waited in the queue for lift passes for about 25 minutes, so maybe we should have arrived earlier. The hire of gear went much faster, but do make sure you take some I.D. with you as they need that for gear hire. We checked our bag in at the bag check which is $5 for the day, and you can go back to it as many times as you need to during the day. I booked a group snowboarding lesson and our instructor was very nice. They do try to teach you everything you need to know, but with a big group everything gets covered very quickly and there is no time to really cement the basics. Alpine meadows (which is the beginners slope), was very busy and when you have no brakes or turning control it's very hard to avoid running into people, so I spent most of the day on my butt! The staff were friendly and helpful, but for a first timer some more help with fitting my boots and so on would have been good.
Overall it was a great time up the mountain, just be prepared for large crowds and having to wait in lines at the start of the day.

Quite a lengthy drive to both the ski fields from Taupo, but worth it in the end. The view from the chairlifts are amazing. The on snow restaurants/bars are by far better than any snow bars available in Australia.

Whakapapa was much busier than Turoa but it was a little closer, so not sure which has the overall advantage.

Remember to stop and take in the view from the top, and remember that your are sitting on an active volcano.

FYI the staff at both ski fields are very friendly.

It will be easier if you could have a weather forecast before going as to avoid heavy rain/ blizzard.
