We stayed here as we thought it would be the nearest most convenient place to get to the Tongariro crossing. Wish we didn't. I am totally in agreement with some of the reviews below - I don't know whether because they're the closest national park in that area that they feel they can abuse their status and treat everyone like dirt.
We were checked in by an old couple - their bluntness and their general attitude to everything made us feel most unwelcome from the start. They seemed most particular about everything from exactly where we could park our campervan (even though there was loads of spaces) to whether our Jucy van had electrical warranty or something and they made a fuss about checking our van. We'd already spent 2 weeks campervanning around NZ and staying in holiday parks and neither has ever been an issue.
While we were in the kitchen prepping dinner grumpy old man came in and shouted to everyone in the kitchen "who's doing their laundry - it needs to be removed NOW". It was ours and we already were keeping an eye on the time - he couldn't even wait 5 minutes.
Facilities - toilets and showers looked relatively new and clean. But that's the only positive thing about this place.
The next morning we had to move our campervan to a different car park before our trip to the crossing. After 7 hours of trekking we returned with empty water bottles clearly very tired and thirsty (there are no drinking water points at the crossing) and wanted to fill up our bottles before we drove to our next destination. As one of us is walking up to the taps at the holiday park, grumpy old man is standing on his balcony and waves at us to leave. We say we're only going to fill up on water and he shouts "you can fill up in the river for all I care!" Absolutely disgusting attitude. Everyone in NZ has been so friendly and flexible that we have met so far - these guys were most inhospitable and entirely in the wrong profession in my opinion. I would never recommend anyone to stay here.
