“Unique experience”
Reviewed June 21, 2014

The two tiny cottages at Te Tiro are as far removed from five star hotel luxury as you can imagine. The other end of the spectrum, with one room offering a little kitchen and dining area and a double bed, with two futons on the mezzanine floor above, accessed by a sturdy wooden ladder at the foot of the bed. The bathroom is a separate building at the end of the verandah, which can be a mission on a cold night.
But for a location with a difference, Te Tiro is unbeatable.
It is a privilege to be staying on this lovely farm at an altitude of over 400 metres, in its bush setting overlooking spectacular views of farmland to a distant mountain range, as mists come and go and the sky is lit with the moon and stars.
This is real New Zealand in a way few tourists will ever see it, on a farm which has been in the family for generations. The warmth and hospitality of the hosts is not the least of its charms,
Truly an experience not to be missed.

We had a very pleasant stay at Te Tiro, with kind, genuine, down to earth hosts who were very helpful in receiving our baggage that missed the plane from Sydney and making sure everything was as dust free as possible for our daughter's allergy problem. The cottage was cute and cosy, the private glowworm viewing area was ace, and the beauty of the setting in farmland a little off the beaten track was awesome. For us though, we found the actual space in the cottage too squeezy. Unfortunately, there was really nowhere to fit our bags without moving the little table and chairs up against the wall, and then we were really having to climb around them to get to the table. There was nowhere else to sit, so no lounge or anything. We didn't mind the short walk to our own little bathroom, it was all part if the fun! If I was 20 years old, traveling with a couple of friends with very little luggage it would have been perfect!

My wife and I and our teenage son decided we needed to get a weekend away from Auckland for a night so we decided to head to Waitomo. We searched for a place to stay and Te Tiro always came up as different and yes it was in all positive ways .Great little cottages very clean and tidy with all you need .with amazing views over the wonderful green countryside. We were met by pippin who showed us to our cottage followed by puk the dog who makes him self very much at home .After visiting the waterfalls and natural bridge we came home for some quiet time and it really is quiet -wonderful. Off to the huhu cafe in waitomo -really recommnded. We had some wild weather at night but we were all warm and cosy. Breakfast provided in the morning cereals ,toasts juice jams all good stuff. So if you want a great getaway this is the place . Hope your better Rachel

We stayed here for a night with our kids B14 G12 after doing a blackwater rafting tour that afternoon. We were the only family staying there so it was extremely quiet to the point where I had one of the best nights sleep during our 2 week trip to NZ. The cabin is well appointed with everything you need for a good nights stay - we plugged our hard drive into the TV and the kids where pretty happy watching a movie from the top beds above us. The host Rachel pointed us towards their own glow worm grotto just a short stroll down the track from the cabin as well as recommending dinner at Huhu Cafe in the town centre (which is also an absolute must for anyone staying in the area). We will certainly recommend staying at Te Tiro to any family and friends visiting the Waitomo area.

Room Tip: Te Tiro is located about 15 mins out of the town centre along a winding road - it is best to find it...

We stayed here for one night with our two boys aged 10 and 12. The cabin is in the most amazing location on top of a hill overlooking waitomo valley and beyond all the way to Lake Taupo and Mt Ruapehu. Unfortunately for us we had very bad weather but our view over the local valley was still amazing. This little cottage is very compact surrounded by bush and tree ferns, with a loft area with 2 single beds which our boys just adored and turned into their own boys den. Underneath the loft was a queen bed and then a small kitchen area with tables and chairs, as well as a little deck outside. The outside bathroom was novel and spotlessly clean. A lovely continental breakfast was also included. Despite the weather we did the little walk down to the glow worm gotto just near the cabins and it was magical , even tho we had already done a glow worm tour during the day. Angus popped by to check on us and he had some wonderful stories to share with us about his experiences in the area. We only wished we had stayed longer!

I asked Nina to book places a little different when it came to our NZ trip, and she really delivered with Te Tiro.

Our host, Rachel, was incredibly friendly and helpful and her little dog was absolutely hilarious was I was trying to park our car. Walking up to the cabin Rachel pointed out the sky, coming from the bright light cities of London and Sydney I rarely get to witness the beautiful milky way we saw sprawled before us, it truly was a sight to behold. We ended up watching the stars for hours that night. I do wish there was a way you could sit or lay out to star gaze, there was seats outdoor but the porch is covered so you really have to stand at the edge.

Unfortunately we only had one night in the cabin as we were travelling on, but the stay was very comfortable and I slept very well. Waking up and looking out of the window I nearly dropped my coffee, the views across the land are almost as spectacular as the sky at night.

I'd definitely stay there again but hopefully for longer next time.

Our cottage was adorable, clean, quiet, and comfy. Rachel made us feel very welcome and suggested a great walk around Dabchick pond. The little path into the gully at night to see the glow worms was as special as the cave experience we had during the day. I was sorry we only booked one night here, I could have stayed a week - so much to explore for this country girl.
