“Probably not a bad option compared to others in the area”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2011

We choose this place based on the website and reviews from other travelers. When we got there, it was nothing like we expected. The room was comparable to a tin demountable that was very small with walls covered in plastic paneling. We were so cold during the the night once temperatures dropped. Internet was not accessible to our room. It was certainly clean and the dining room was lovely. The hosts were personable and friendly but to the extent that it felt slightly intrusive. I think there are nicer rooms judging by the website (and glancing into other rooms walking by) but this was one certainly wasn't on the website and was charged at exactly the same price. It was $120 per night, which I felt steep for what we got. With that said, this place is probably popular due to the lack of available options in the area.

Room Tip: Look at room first prior to booking.

After two nights in Auckland, we stopped at the Hamilton Gardens on our drive to Waitomo. Owners Janet and Colin were most welcoming, our rooms were spotless. Both had suggestions and directions for hikes in the area, options for dining, and other ideas for our three weeks in New Zealand. We did walk the Ruakuri Trail and we had already booked the Blackwater Raft Trip. Colin made sure we had towels to take with us even though we were only staying one night at the B&B. Wireless internet was available for $2/hour on the honor system.

We enjoyed Colin's homemade biscuits, sampled grapes right off the vine, strolled through their beautiful garden, and took a few vine ripened tomatoes with us on our journey. Breakfast was substantial -- cereals, juice, toast, etc.

There were a few dining spots close by.

I stayed one night at the Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I discovered the property on an attraction website and decided to look into it because it was one of the cheapest. It really did provide excellent value for the money I paid.

I arrived around dinnertime and was pleasantly greeted by Colin, one of the owners. He quickly showed me my room and recommended a few places to get some dinner. He also mentioned that I could check out some of the glow worms after nightfall on a local path, and provided a flashlight to use as well.

The room was simple and comfortable, including a large bed and small television - not too many Colin's homemade biscuits as well! There was also a small rectangular ensuite bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower. I found the bed to be typical of New Zealand comfort, not overly plush but soft enough for a nice sleep. I also tend to like foam pillows, which delightfully are popular around the country including this guest lodge.

A few things to note about the room - there is no air conditioning so in the summer, you may find it stuffy although there is a fan to keep a breeze going. There is also no toiletries except a bottle of shower gel so you'll have to bring your own, which I was prepared for. The bed also had an electric blanket on it which leads me to believe the rooms could get a bit cold in the winter.

Other points to mention about the property - parking is provided by way of the gravel lot next door. You can also help yourself to the grapes that are growing all around the common areas - they are delicious. Wireless internet is provided for a fee - $2 an hour based on the honor system. Breakfast was also provided in the rate and including cereals, toast, drinks and fruit.

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay for one night here. If you are looking for a place to rest your head after all the Waitomo adventures, this is a great choice. It's pretty central in the village with places to eat nearby. The room is comfortable and there are some really nice amenities included in the rate.

I enjoyed my one-night stay here very much. The hosts were friendly and helpful, both during my stay and in e-mails beforehand. The rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. I highly recommend room 3, which has great views and lots of light. The location is perfect.

Although the hosts are sociable and the location extremely convenient tea/coffee stuff is in the room and guests can use the laundry it is not good enough. We stayed two nights so we could visit the caves (with hindsight one night is enough). The breakfast consists of undrinkable orange juice and a limited range of cereals and toast. No cooked breakfast is offered. The rooms are small, do not have a fridge and are too hot if the sun shines. There is no guest lounge and the eating room struggles to cope with all the many guests at breakfast-time. Our bed was not made up on the second day and the very irritating and frequently barking dog did not help. Evening food is not available although there is a choice of walkable eateries nearby. We came to the conclusion that the business is being milked to the detriment of guests’ experiences. Despite a seeming lack of decent competitive accommodation in the immediate vicinity, some options do exist albeit a bit further away from the caves themselves and if there were a next time we would look at these more closely.

This B&B is conveniently situated to visit the Visitor's Centre and Waitomo Cave. Colin and Janet were very helpful and suggested walks etc. we could do in the locality. Our room was spacious with a large bathroom. The Lodge is directly opposite the HuHu Restaurant, which we found to be of good quality.

Indeed a great place to stay and all the reviews are true. Set in lovely surroundings you really will find it hard to find a nicer place to stay. The owners were very friendly and provided all that we needed. Rooms were very nice and exactly what you'd want and expect. Only gripe which has been mentioned before, no cooked breakfast. Still they had a large array of other breakfast items.

I'd stay again.
