“"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit..." and the adventure began!”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

We stayed in Hobbit motel Unit 2 on the last night of our NZ trip. What a wonderful way to conclude our Middle Earth experience after having visited Hobbiton! Though the interior of the unit had modern fixtures and amenities, little details such as tree branch curtain rods and hessian curtains over the round windows reminded us we were actually living in a hobbit hole. After seeing the property in numerous brochures and guide books we were a bit concerned it would go down the highly commercialised and touristy path, so we were pleasantly surprised by how natural and rustic the property was kept, though it's practically only a stone's throw from the main Waitomo village and attractions. There were other guests staying next door and down at the ship, but we could hardly feel their presence. It's hard to pick a favourite part of our stay, but being able to step outside the front door with 360 degree views of the starry night sky was definitely a magical moment. The only down side was the lack of flyscreens on the windows so bugs might be a bother (but that did add to the unit's rustic charms).

Room Tip: Hobbit Unit 2 is more private with its own secluded driveway and parking

We stayed in the very adorable hobbit hole. The decorations inside matched the theme just right, although the laminate and carpet floors detracted a slight bit. Cool idea for a hotel, you can also stay in a boat or plane. Clean and spacious.

We stayed here for the sheer novelty of staying somewhere different. The Hobbit unit came with a double bed in the sitting room and 4 bunks in a separate room. The beds were really sturdy and comfortable and we loved the donkey that lived on the roof when he came to wish us good morning!

The shower is a wet room shower, which turns out lovely if you've had an afternoon of black water rafting or something, you don't even have to step in!

Very peaceful, very remote, but very close to a wonderful restaurant called Huhu, where we got the best meal of our holiday for such a reasonable price. Also within walking distance of the Spellbound and the BlackWaterRafting companies.

There is no wifi in the Hobbit Unit.

Say hello to Joe the lovely pig at check in/out and mind your shoe laces, he enjoys a good chew!

It was one of the more expensive places we stayed and there are certainly cheaper options, but the novelty won't be the same. Also, we were only three, and the place can sleep 6 comfortably, so might work out really good value for some other groups.

We booked this accommodation to satisfy a teenage Lord of the Rings fan and we weren’t disappointed. The Hobbit unit we stayed in was well done and the bed was super comfortable. We loved the round hobbit doors and the hessian curtains added a touch of authenticity. As you sit out the front, surveying the countryside, you are inevitably joined by the local pig or donkey who poke their head over from the roof above. A beautiful, quiet location and of a night the stars form a blanket overhead. Delightful.

We stayed two nights in the plane cockpit, around a black water rafting trip. It was amazing! We had so much fun playing in the cockpit, or just sitting up there with cups of tea. The plane was surprisingly warm and well fitted out (not very spacious of course) although the bed is a little uncomfortable for those with a bad back. It was wonderfully peaceful at night. We made friends with the sheep who lives around the boat, and enjoyed watching the turkeys fly up into their tree to roost for the night. There weren't many other guests during our stay but we noticed there were features to make it as private as possible, like the separate driveways for the front and rear of the plane.

If you like things slightly cool and unusual, absolutely book this place.

Room Tip: If you're staying in the plane, of course you want the cockpit!

Us big kids had a lot of fun taking turns playing pilot and co-pilot in the old Bristol cargo plane. This was a very enjoyable, unique and memorable stay for both us, especially for my husband whose childhood heroes are WWII pilots.
The room itself is small and very basic with an old musty smell, though we found everything clean enough and functional. If you keep in mind that this is not a 5-star hotel and you are staying here for the novelty, you will not be disappointed.

Only stayed for one night but it was a novel experience.
Booked the entire plane for my family, but ended up staying in the ship as we thought it was much nicer and more spacious. The rooms in both the plane and the ship probably need a bit of a renovation but this didn't detract too much from the accommodation.
A good choice for kids. Close to the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves too which was an enjoyable trip. Lots of other activites for adventure junkies close by as well.
Great restaurant with excellent food and wine list close by called Huhu.
