First of all: Andy was a real great guide for the tour - enthusiastic, knowledgable und a very funny guy ... so basically everything you need for a great tour!

The tour itself offers a lot of variety: abseiling (which was not as exciting as I would have thought - so people with fear of heights: go for it!), caving (which was truely great), black water rafting (more for relaxation than in any comparison to white water rafting), thousands of glowworms at the caves ceiling and finally a nice climb out of the cave. We loved that the tour really included some activities to do, a small group (it was 4 of us) and we learned a lot about the caves and their inhabitants! Even though the equipment has visible signs of having been in the caves a lot of times, I felt safe and well equipped at every minuite of the tour and it's anyways not a beauty competition down there ;). Thanks Andy for a great tour... we loved it!

This adventure into the caves of Waitomo is not be to missed! [Am going to write my experience in detail because i felt that most of the other reviews did not sufficiently depict what you will encounter]. We had a cheery guide Amy who ensured everyone stay safe and had fun. You only need to wear your swimwear and own socks, and pack clothes and towel for after showers. After checking in, we drove about 15 mins to the actual cave. There, we changed into wet suits which kept us very warm. Changing rooms provided. For our feet, we wore our own socks, and were given booties to wear over our socks, before sticking our feet into gum boots. Safety gears like harnesses and helmets were provided. We practised how to abseil before actually doing it (not difficult). This is the first time we abseiled and we had no problems doing it. make sure you go slow and enjoy the views (you get to abseil 27m into the cave). After that, we waded in the water amongst rocks to the part of the cave where the glow worms are. Do note that if you can get boots that are calf high, that would be good. Nevertheless this is an activity where you will get wet. The water is mostly calf deep, at some places, waist deep. Because of the rocks, sure footing is needed. The glow worm experience is fantastic and informative. You sit in the dark and gaze at the 'milky way'. The spaces that you cave into are optional as you dont need to go through them to get to the other side (unlike Kuchi tunnels). For the tubing, you drift gently down the waters (this is an extremely mild version of white water rafting). The final rock climbing out of the cave can be challenging, but perhaps more mental than physical. This is the only way out of the cave. You will be in your harness as you climb the rocks. After getting out of the cave, you get a warm shower before driving back to the office where you will get warm soup and bread. The wet suits get cleaned before the next wearer (but the helmets had a funky smell).

Overall great fun. Make sure you go with fun pple.

The guides were great and the experience was really awesome. Amy was a great guide and it's a local family owned place. They are really nice. The owner even drove me to the bus stop after the excursion. Highly recommended!
