Waitomo Adventures - Lost World 4 Hr Option

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: There are now two DRY options in the Amazing Lost World Cave. They are both awesome. One includes a huge 100m abseil, the other has no abseil and instead has a zip line 80m up in the roof of the massive cavern. To avoid confusion, we tried to list these two options separately with Tripadvisor. Inexplicably, Tripadvisor have advised us that they believe these are the same activity and wont let us have a separate listing. We assure customers that they are VERY different so please see our website or contact us for more detail. We want to ensure you get what you're expecting and also the option that's best for you. Lost World 4 Hr Option (allow approx. 4 Hours) (This is the option that has been going for almost 30 years). Abseil/Rappel 100m followed by a dry caving adventure as you explore this magnificent cave system. Surprisingly gentle - freehanging in a massive void... Bouncing a bit because of the sheer length of the rope. The roar of the Mangapu river echoes up from caverns far below. Beams of light seek to penetrate the eerie mists. Weird plants cling desperately to the sheer rock walls. It's like being lowered into the bowels of some prehistoric animal. Climb back over slabs of rock and ladders. Excellent glowworms. Min age 10 yrs. No experience required. Operator is Local Family and has over 29 years of safe operation. Operations is Qualmark and Outdoorsmark Endorsed. FREE PHOTOS OF YOUR TRIP SENT BY INTERNET Lost World Through the Window (The is the new option Started in 2016 - allow approx. 3.5 hours) This relatively gentle option has no abseiling (rappelling). Also because we don't go to the bottom of the abyss, there's only a few glowworms. Instead it has a zipline and also a tyrolean traverse as you make your way high up in the ceiling of the cavern. Its a bit quicker (about 3.5 hours); less physically demanding and also at a lower price point than the abseiling option. The views however are unbelievable and you will know that you are indeed in a very special place. Min age 10 yrs. No experience required. Operator is Local Family and has over 29 years of safe operation. Operations is Qualmark and Outdoorsmark Endorsed. Free photos of your trip sent by internet

For starters, the ride to the cave is awesome. New zealand is a beaut'!
From start to finish this tour was great, if only i had more time for the 7 hour trip!
With no previous rope work experience, even when on the bar before our descent i was made to feel very comfortable. The guide was ultra knowledgable & answered any and all of my questions.
About the land the history animals & safety.
The company uses a very professional tour plan, everything is ready to go, no waiting around! The entire place is like nothing i imagined, i was confident i was going to like the abseil most but no way not once your inside that place and you start to walk around & explore. The 100m Abseil is only the beginning :).
Big ups to you guys!! Genuinely, i want to do it again.
Thanks!

“Amazing experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

The 100m abseil seemed a bit daunting while we sat on the bar looking down but in the expert and experienced hands of our two guides we felt informed and were encouraged the whole way down into the Lost World. Our guides were so friendly and knowledgeable, and were adept at including the younger and older members of the group with ease. No personal cameras are allowed for safety reasons. The photos are $35, but well worth getting as there are extra photos which enhance the memory of the adventure. You do need a reasonable level of fitness to climb the ladder to exit the cave.

“Just like Jurassic Park”

We had a blast on this tour! The abseil was great, and I didn't mind that we took it slow- there was so much to see and take in, why rush?! It would have been nice to take out own pictures but the purchased ones were reasonably priced and helped capture what we saw that day. The ladder out was certainly scarier than the abseil but you are completely tied into a rope and could take as many breaks as you needed.

“Just like a fairytale”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

We did the 4 hour lost world tour with Scott, our friendly and very informative guide. He made us feel very safe although we were abseiling from 100m high.
The abseil is beautiful, when you're descending it looks like a fairytale. After the descend we did a bit of rock climbing, saw some glowworms and climbed out on a 30m ladder, most of these things on a secure line.
The guide will take some photos during the tour which you can buy afterwards and are quite cheap.
