“Beautiful cave! Glowworms up close!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2014

We picked this cave instead of the Glowworm cave because you could take photos here. Great choice! The spiral ramp in and out of the cave was remarkable. The cave has many features including a river (you could take the wet tour and go blackwater rafting), stalactites, stalagmites, column, pools, and glow worms - which you could see up close. You could also see the sticky "threads" the glow worms make to catch their prey because they are so close. The whole path is a cemented ramp so it's easy to walk through it. We didn't pre-book and just called the morning of our tour and got a discounted rate; this is probably not advisable during busier tourist seasons. Our guide told us that the carbon monoxide levels are monitored in all the caves there and if it goes over a threshold, the cave could be closed - this happens more with the glowworm cave as many more people go there (there were buses parked there as we went through). So you could potentially go there and not be able to go on the tour!

The tour takes about 2 hours, including the shuttle ride from/to the Legendary Blackwater Rafting Co. where you check in. You could buy food and merchandise and use the toilets here; there are no facilities at the cave itself. The shuttle picks up from the i-site center and the entrance to the glowworm cave as well. This was worth the drive to Waitomo. Highly recommended!

“Family Friendly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2014

Did the combo - Ruakuri & Waitomo
We had a pram (pushchair) so this cave was well equipped for it.
Interesting informative commentary, probably the better cave, to see formations etc, inc. some glowworms.

if time is limited, i would choose this one and skip waitomo, as you see the best of both, in one cave.

“Great family trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2014

great little family trip. Visited the Glow worm cave, Ruakuri and then Aranui. Well worth the money. THL are running a very slick operation, the sort of thing that makes you proud to be a kiwi. Its great seeing all the overseas visitors admiring our country.
The caves are amazing, all different so worth doing then all. did it over two days which is easily manageable. Could squeeze it all into one if you really needed too. Our two girls, 12 and 14, did the Black Water Rafting, Labyrinth tour on the tubes and had a great time. Found all the guides excellent and very knowledgeable. Can't recommend highly enough.

“Average tour”

If you have time to do this or Waitomo Caves, do the other one. The walk down to the caves was quite exciting, if someone speak to the walls, you can actually hear them like they are next to you. Quite unbelievable .

“Also a Must-Visit in Waitomo.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2014

My friend and I bought our combo-passes to these three caves, Glowworm, Ruakuri and Aranui during our 3-day trip to Waitomo in New Zealand. Our schedule was very packed that we missed the scheduled trip to Aranui. So, a note to you guys, do plan your trip carefully as all of the caves are worth visiting :)

Ruakuri means two dogs. It's a very well-maintained cave and unlike our caves in Malaysia, it is very cold inside. You don't have to bring torchlight/headlamps and you don't have to worry about walking on slippery cave floors. The cave has suspended pathways and sensors that will turn off whenever you stand too close/try to touch the walls of the cave.

I shall not share more, you should just visit Ruakuri and be prepared to be mesmerized by it :)
