“A fantastic guide 'B', who made the tour so interesting ! Well Done !”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

We (3 couples from the 'Lion City') were booked on this tour on the 9th Sep 2013. The guide ms.'B' made the tour so interesting with many stories and information of the cave.
Firstly, we entered the cave and spiraled down 9 levels. We arrived at the rock where we were asked to wash our hands for good measures before proceeding further.
'B' would opened some doors with a remote control and switched on some lights on as we move along. She then explained many things and showed us the features of the cave, and of course glowworms. Photography was allowed here, but not the Waitomo Caves and I wondered why ?
We also saw a group doing the abseiling and some places that they do the black water rafting.
With such enthusiasm and energy 'B' was really a very fun and capable guide. Well done 'B'
Thank you !

“Ruakuri Cave”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

We started out at the Glowworm Cave, which was an excellent opportunity to view the glowworms in silence and complete darkness. Next was Ruakuri. The guide was excellent and knowledgeable. This cave has much to see, after descending the long spiral walkway, endless stalagmites and stalactites,, caverns, a rather awe inspiring "cathedral area" etc. The guide also explained the interesting relatively recent history regarding discovery of sacred burial grounds near the old entrance & issues with ownership (lawyer visitors will find this very interesting!)

I can't remember the exact cost, but no matter, I know it was worth it.

Note: If you also want a more rustic ( tougher walking and climbing) cave experience, don't miss Ngarua Caves, near the top of Takaka Hill on the South Island.

“Nice introduction to the caves”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

WE visited the caves in August with our 2 daughters aged 7 and 10. Our guide was fantastic: very friendly but also very knowledgeable. The visit lasts a couple of hours along a very safe path.. you get to see some of the famous glow worms and some beautiful stalagtites...

“nice but wished we could have done black water rafting”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

The Ruakuri Cave is an impressive cave, and wheelchair accessible--no stairs, and our guide was very good. We saw glow worms and impressive cave formations. We just wish we had had the time to do the abseiling and black water rafting.
If you do the Ruakuri cave plus the glow worm cave you will hear a lot of the same information about the caves and glow worms, but they are worth doing. We also enjoyed the movie playing near the waiting area to enter the glow worm caves--interesting local history.

“Best of both worlds!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Ok! So here is the deal.. Waitomo basically has 3 caves for tourists : Waitomo Glow worm, Ruakuri and Aranui. The main Waitomo caves have the maximum concentration of glow worms while Aranui is mainly known for its rock formations.

Ruakuri, on the other hand, has both!! That is what makes it the best of the 3! Right from the beginning where you spiral down to the caves in PITCH DARKNESS (Which was actually fun!!) to the rock formations and the glow worm colonies, this place has it all! Its a little spooky at places, but hey, that is super fun too ;)

We had an amazing tour guide, Mika, who made the trip all the more worthwhile!

We went to the main glow worm caves after this but it had lost its charm as we had already seen the glow worms at Ruakuri. Waitomo caves are more fun as they take you in boats to see the worm colonies.

But personally, Ruakuri wins hands down :)
