“Nice introduction to the caves”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

WE visited the caves in August with our 2 daughters aged 7 and 10. Our guide was fantastic: very friendly but also very knowledgeable. The visit lasts a couple of hours along a very safe path.. you get to see some of the famous glow worms and some beautiful stalagtites...

“nice but wished we could have done black water rafting”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

The Ruakuri Cave is an impressive cave, and wheelchair accessible--no stairs, and our guide was very good. We saw glow worms and impressive cave formations. We just wish we had had the time to do the abseiling and black water rafting.
If you do the Ruakuri cave plus the glow worm cave you will hear a lot of the same information about the caves and glow worms, but they are worth doing. We also enjoyed the movie playing near the waiting area to enter the glow worm caves--interesting local history.

“Best of both worlds!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Ok! So here is the deal.. Waitomo basically has 3 caves for tourists : Waitomo Glow worm, Ruakuri and Aranui. The main Waitomo caves have the maximum concentration of glow worms while Aranui is mainly known for its rock formations.

Ruakuri, on the other hand, has both!! That is what makes it the best of the 3! Right from the beginning where you spiral down to the caves in PITCH DARKNESS (Which was actually fun!!) to the rock formations and the glow worm colonies, this place has it all! Its a little spooky at places, but hey, that is super fun too ;)

We had an amazing tour guide, Mika, who made the trip all the more worthwhile!

We went to the main glow worm caves after this but it had lost its charm as we had already seen the glow worms at Ruakuri. Waitomo caves are more fun as they take you in boats to see the worm colonies.

But personally, Ruakuri wins hands down :)

“Ruakuri Cave”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

This is a delightful trip to take and takes about two hours. From the spiral down into the cave system hat the beginning to the excellent walkways through the caves , this must be on top of your to-do list of cave walks.
The cave features glow worms ,underground rivers complete with rafters, fine features of stalagmites and stalactites, cave coral , everything you expect to see in a cave.
The big plus is that photography is allowed and the cave is wheelchair accessible for those with mobility problems.

We say all three caves over three days and the Ruakuri Cave was by far the best. It is also the longest tour so don't be in a rush. We were able to take photos (which you can't in the Gloworm Cave), and see gloworms, formations, basically everything! At least do this cave.
