An old motel (don't let the front put you off) but the room had been updated.
The staff were great.
The restaurant was truly fantastic with an extensive menu. The food was well presented and delicious, in my view well up with the 5 star city restaurants. Don't go on a Sunday though as it is closed (even for breakfast).

The motel is from an older era but functional. It does not have air conditioning, heating was provided by a convection heater that did a surprisingly good job. What was off-putting was the supply of foam earplugs with a note advising to use them if you are a light sleeper. Noise from the hwy echoes up and from the railway which is about 500m away. While I slept ok, I'm sure others may not. A heater wouldn't go astray in the bathroom either. On the upside, the food from the restaurant was awesome. Wifi has to be purchased but signal is poor / erratic.

To say that the room here is basic is putting it mildly. It's... functional. But it's clean, and you have very little options in Waitomo so it could possibly be the best hotel in town. I would stay here again, but only because there are no other options.

Also in our room we had no cell signal and no wifi, so if that sort of thing is vitally important to you (you're on vacation, right?) then you may want to look elsewhere.

Just 3 kms from the Waitoma Cave, this is the best option if you are there. Spread in a large complex with nice surrounding, the accommodation are in cobe houses with all the facilities you expect - fully equipped kitchen, sitting area and cozy bed rooms. We did not use wifi so can't say about it. The only minus point is that it is on the main high way and there is noise of fast moving vehicles all the time. We five adults stayed in two room accommodation for a night and fully enjoyed our stay. Few attached photographs explain the property.

Room Tip: Take a room far away from the main road.

We stayed at The Caves Motor Inn while visiting the glow worm caves. It’s about a 10 min drive down to the little township where the caves are. The place has a very old fashioned family-owned feel & the owner greeted us at reception & served us at dinner too. The Motor-Inn appears to function as a truck stop as well. There is a pub/restaurant on site with lovely meals (we had the cheesy bread, seafood chowder & the steak).
We stayed in room 10 and this little block of rooms had a lovely view over a grassy little paddock that I would request again if I stayed, though these rooms are closer to the highway so a little noisier (but I’m a light sleeper & didn’t find it a problem). I’ll be honest - If you’re overly posh I wouldn’t recommend this place, the room was simple but comfortable - no aircon but a large patio door & a fan that was comfortable even in summer. There were a few bugs & spiders in the bathroom, oh and the toilet didn’t flush... like .. at all so just check yours with a 1 before attempting to flush a 2 ;-)
