“Not according to expectations”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

We arrived the hotel with high expectations, this after reading earlier recommendations and the prepaid price. The room was wthout style and charme, and the restaurant average.
Plus for a nice pool and good view and hard working waiters.

We've stayed there for six days in last August and it was wonderful! The location ie very beautiful, with nature all around you and a great view of Morro do Pico. The staff was the best part: very helpful, welcoming, nice people. The breakfast was very good and the gastronomic festival was amazing. The bedroom, however, could be more spacious and the bathroom wasn't in its best conditions, but nothing so bad to reduce our fun.

Room Tip: Tha bungalows are expensive, but much better than the apartments. Just don't pick number 8, very...

We stayed in a bungalow with our terrace with great sea view and our own jacuzzi...idyllic! Place not as intimate as others as it has many more rooms. Service is not up to the level expected given reputation and prices charged, except the reception team who was welcoming and helpful. Huge rooms with the most modern equipment. Magnifique swimming pool. Special evening buffet twice a week is a must.

Room Tip: The bungalows...numbers 1 to 7 for the view!

Ze Maria has the best location (closer to town, walkin distance to other restaurants) and has it´s charm... cozy bungalows, eco-friendly, gorgeous breakfast, it has it´s own vegetables production, nice salads (no where else has nice fresh salads) and the best dinner night in town!!!
The owner is a very nice guy and if you´re lucky he will be there in the next table during Breakfast to whom you can chat a little.

my friend and i stayed at ze maria in the beginning of august. first of all let me say that the island is one of the most amazing places i've ever been in my life- and i consider myself quite well traveled. that said, if i wasn't with a portuguese speaker, i sense it would have been a slightly different experience. for example, its best to get around by renting a buggy from a local, and the guides at the beaches who take you on the snorkeling tours etc rarely speak english. the exception was the scuba diving crew, but it was still slightly uncomfortable. if you can manage to find yourself a portuguese speaker or even a brazilian to take along, though, the journey will be fantastic.
i didn't actually stay in one of the rooms, though they looked beautiful. we were guests in the owner's house down below.
one thing to note is there are lots of stairs on the property- to the pool and the restaurant. the pool is lovely with fantastic views, and the restaurant is truly phenomenal with great tropical beverages. they host a great buffet once a week that people from all over the island come to.
i would highly recommend the hotel-the reception girls do speak english as well.

Room Tip: ask for a mountain view room

Spent 5 days there. Was so well famed that I expected a special charming place to spend a few memorable days with my son and his fiancée. So i pre-paid the extravagant 800 US$ (yes, eight hundred US Dollars) daily rate for each of our two rooms.
Thanks god, weather was beautiful less one rainy day, the scenery is gorgeous, I found submarine life richer than the one I knew in Cancun, and Coral Reef.
My room was big, correctly equipped, but so dark (no window in the proper bedroom) that we had to keep the lights on at any hour of the day. The furnishing and decoration is extremely poor, badly maintained and totally outdated. The breakfast buffet was sad, few options, two watered juice in plastic containers, nobody to welcome you or help you with dirty dishes, no eggs or hot dishes, but a single waiter fighting with a broken burner lasting more than 10 minutes to prepare a simple omelette. The restaurant food at lunch and dinner festival was great but service kept terrible ! Fortunately, the desk people made their best to be welcoming caring and helpful trying to compensate the bad experience of the guest. They have a wi-fi access totally unstable and inefficient, you last at least 1 minute to download a web page in the best conditions... In five days, I never see a manager or supervisor anywhere in the hotel.
We had diner and visited rooms in two other beautiful recently opened pousadas, TEJU-ACU and TRIBOJU, that fit exactly with what I was expecting from Ze Maria, charming, sophisticated, extremely welcoming, delicious food, for a price at the same level as Ze Maria, but worth the accommodation and services. They should be your best choices when you decide to visit this paradise.
I have also to recommend the good restaurant VARANDA and GREAT experience at restaurant MERGULHAO (we were twice there) by the Island harbour, everything perfect, great food, design, comfort, service, everything perfect... obviously, being in Noronha, the bill is also quite expansive, but you would pay the same price in other restaurants of the island for much poorer experiences...

Came here with my dad and sis in Aug 2010 , great perfect weather.
Few days of morning rain and not super dry and hot!

Looking for a great Pousada, this is the best you can get in Fernando. Low expectations is the key... , the prices are definetely high but you pay what you get for this location!

They have great pool, great buffet dinner on Wednesday nights (everyone comes here) and great location with beautiful views.

I would definately come back here!
The beach outside of the Ze Maria is really great , I wish I had spent more time than 5 days because there is so much to see and do!

Do

go to the first Ilha Tour but be ready to be sore for few days because is a lot of walking, going up stairs, down stairs and very steep walking. (if you are older and have some physical challenges maybe don't go).
On the Ilha tour you can see the whole island in one day believe or not they make it happen! But if you are not in shape you will be sore for few days after this Ilha tour..

The next day try to do some other tour that is not all day or too tiring.

Bring your beach shoes (not sandals) those ugly shoes that you can walk like tennis shoes and get it wet ( especially for the Ilha tour).

Bring towels for the ilha tour

Rent snorkeling gear if you love the water like me

Buy waterproof camera (I love my Canon d10 takes great photos and is completely waterproof /another option Sony TX5) / you can rent waterproof camera too
Lots of sunblock (you won't be able to wear sunblock in one of the tour locations- ATALAIA)

Everyday after we arrive from the tours we went to the beautiful pool and saw beautiful sunsets

Drink lots of water

Have a great massage experience with Tatiana (she is very kind and great)

DON'T

have high expectations of the service and hotel (just enjoy the beauty of the nature and be glad 5 star hotel chains are not in Fernando destroying and bringing too many people in this beauty location)

Don't worry about bringing plug for mosquito since Ze Maria provides that for your convinience

If you have any other questions I am glad to assist..

I will post some photos soon
