Owner Harald and his wife Sonia have some experience in the hotel business and have put a lot of labor and thought into developing what had been a run-down hacienda into a lovely hotel. Our room had a beautiful bathroom in which the shower area was enclosed by a natural stone wall, lit by a skylight, with live plants growing in it. The grounds are carefully planted, and there are a few animals (maybe a sheep and a goat or two?) to give the place that rustic feel, but inside the rooms are spotless, have excellent beds, and have ultra modern conveniences (super quiet a/c, good plumbing, etc.). The outdoor dining area is in the garden under a palapa roof, and the food is very good.

The main square in Izamal would be a long-ish walk, and some people might find the walk home uncomfortable at night because there aren't a lot of people out and about. A car is recommended but not essential.

Room Tip: Did not see any other rooms than our own, which was as described so I would be inclined to trust the owners' descriptions.

Wow.... Initially I was skeptical seeing only excellent and good reviews on Tripadvisor . However upon arriving and experiencing the hotel and the staff all I can say is hats off, thanks for a great stay and we shall be definitely back!

The hotel is situated on the quiet outskirts of Izamal. The rooms are designed and executed with utmost attention to detail. The palapa and pool area is well appointed and offers a generous sized pool, a hammock area for suntanning or enjoying a glass of wine at night.

We had a supper and a breakfast there. The food was generous, fresh, tasty and served on time.

Different grade rooms are available, but even the basic room is immaculately clean, decorated with taste and is very spacious.

There is a Maya shower to rinse off after soaking in the pool. The concept is simple yet stunning.

A perfect setting for winding down.

Thanks!

An oasis! We loved it! Izamal has a magical "World Heritage" feel to it, and staying in the yard of an Old Hacienda converted horse stable was simply icing on the cake! We will definitely be staying here when we come through the area again.
It was a great "pit-stop" between Merida and Cancun.

Room Tip: I regretted not spending a bit more to get a room with AC.

Although Trip Advisor rated this hotel as tops, I was still amazed. One reason may have been the contradictions. Our room was a converted horse stall in a converted barn. There was no hot water or telephone. It was wonderful! The grounds are gardens. Harald, the owner is an Austrian ex-pat who got tired of the rat race running hotels in Berlin, bought an old 10 ton army truck, converted it into a camper and had it shipped to Canada. He toured Canada, the US, Mexico and Central America for two years, finally settling on the coast in Yucatan. After a hurricane wiped out his place he moved way into the interior and bought an old horse breeding hacienda in Izamel. He started converting the barns into hotel rooms one by one and now has 12, with another under refurbishing. The grounds are beautiful, about 40 acres. He and his wife are very friendly and very helpful. You make an appointment for breakfast so the fruit is cut fresh for you without sitting around and the breakfast breads could not be baked any fresher: they are pulled out of the oven as you arrive. You need to make an appointment for dinner as well. My only complaint about dinner is that it did not last all night! Don't get me wrong, there was plenty of food, it was just so good I was sorry to see it done.
Izamal is a fairly small town, off the beaten path with very few tourists. The restaurants in town are good too. You will get an authentic Mexican/Yucatan experience in Izamal. It is like being on a different planet from Cancun or Playa del Carmen. The people are friendly, the town has traditional colonial architecture and you can do everything you want to do on foot. If you want a quiet retreat or a simple romantic time with someone you love, this is the place to go.

Room Tip: The rooms in the barns are bigger and nicer than those in the main house. The cabanas only have a pair of twin beds.

This hotel is an amazing value on the outskirts of a peaceful town. The owners Harald and Sonia have worked hard to create a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere that we've found in the best B&Bs. Sonia cooked some of the tastiest dinners we had on our trip and Harald laughed at my partner's bad jokes. The room was large and clean and the bed was soft. A small minus was a vocal rooster at the neighbors, so earplugs came in handy. My partner enjoyed himself reading next to the pool and I explored the friendly little town of Izamal. The local crafts museum had high quality exhibits. Our stay was a great way to cap our trip.
