“Gorgeous Spot!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

We have just returned from 5 nights at Mawimbi! Unfortunately we had storms for 5 of the six days we were on Isla Holbox but we found the hotel a very relaxing place to be while we were trying to stay dry and out of the wind. Thanks to the team for a wonderful stay and letting us practise our Spanish. Hopefully we will be able to return to some fine weather the next time!

Room Tip: Maybe one away from the main road as it can be noisy with all the buggies passing at all hours.

Our 3rd stay at Mawimbi, and like the other two, felt just like home. Great staff, great food, great ambiance, a beautiful beach with a beach bar/restaurant serves up yummy food along with their friendly service. No doubt Mawimbi will see us again and again....

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony, hammock and view....

the staff was super helpful and friendly in arranging day activities for my friend and I like kayaking, and a boat ride to see other parts of this beautiful island. the food and the drinks at the bar were delicious, including the best fresh grilled squid I have ever had in my life. the beach is beautiful and peaceful, and its a short walk to town. plus you can walk to another hotel restaurant bar next door for a change of food and pace. overall, really fantastic vacation experience for a beautiful getaway from it all.

There are myriad delights to recommend Isla Holbox, and among these delights, Hotel Mawimbi is at the top. Holbox is a universe away from the felt sombrero with tequila shooters/Señor Frog's/all-inclusive, day tripping, seriously lubricated, party boat crowd. The island is not too heavily touristed yet, and perhaps its particular characteristics (no paved roads, nicely underdeveloped tourist amenities, no reef, murkier but still warm turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico, hills of seaweed depending on the ebb and flow of the currents, regulatory regimes in place as protective measures for the Yum-Balam Biosphere Reserve, for examples) will spare the island high rise resort development (one hopes). So Holbox might not be for everyone, but if it is for you, then Hotel Mawimbi is definitely the place to stay. It is a very sweet posada, elegantly understated, beautifully and simply appointed, lovingly maintained, chill to its core, all making for the most pleasurable stay, for families and couples alike, and especially for my wife and I who are on a lifelong honeymoon. The grounds are exquisite, the hotel is in possession of the choicest stretch of beach, its oasis of palms offer shaded respite from the heat of the day, and one is nicely lulled by the calmness of the place, lounging with a book and cerveza and listening the the clatter of palm fronds to pass the hours. Owner Onny is lovely and charming, and runs a brilliant little hotel, with a small staff that is dedicated, skilled, thoughtful, and greatly appreciated by all of the guests. From the superb restaurant/bar servers, to the groundskeepers, to the cleaners, to the outstanding front desk managers--this is the impressive and hard-working familia of the hotel. The casual and comfortable restaurant/bar (Barquito) offers first rate fare with first rate service in a gorgeous setting. If one is inclined to what Holbox offers, it doesn't get better--an immaculate, quiet, well run, and thoroughly delightful posada on a beautiful beach, and a three minute walk to the zócalo. Perfect.

Hotel Mawimbi is a great place to stay while visiting Holbox. It is walking distance to the plaza and next to the ocean. The only catch is that most rooms have partial ocean view because of the palm trees, but it's still a great view. We stayed at the Octopus Suite on the 2nd floor and it was very rustic and clean. The view is angled to the ocean and street, but it's beautiful regardless. The balcony has a hammock and a lounge bed. It's great to relax and feel the breeze from the ocean. There is a lot of attention to detail and the hotel is very comfortable and inviting. AMEX is accepted at this hotel. We received a personalized email from the lovely staff upon arrival home. Highly recommend staying there while in Holbox.

Just spent two nights at Mawimbi. We felt like we were on the set of Gilligans Island! It was so perfectly tropical and rustic. The staff was outstanding. They really worked hard to ensure everyone was enjoying themselves. The food is delicious. The beach is relaxing and comfortable.the power went out for a few hours here and there but that is the hazards of a secluded spot. Would definitely stay again.

I still have sand between my toes! We just returned tonight from 7 nights at Posada Mawimbi, and I miss it already. This perfect little hotel is located on a little bit of paradise, Isla Holbox. This year we spent 4 nights in Cancun to try one end of the beach scale, and then the 7 nights in Holbox for the other end. A great beach vacation.

Hotel Mawimbi is so laid back I struggled to put shoes on this afternoon. You take your shoes off at Mawimbi, and don't put them on until you put on your flip-flops to walk to a new restaurant in the evening. The staff are wonderful, and everyone works hard to make your stay perfect. The recent long rainy season in Mexico, has had an impact on the beaches in Holbox, and they're working to clear them. The closest roads leading to Holbox have been washed out causing an extra 1 1/2 hours on your transit time from Cancun. This is tedious but the destination is wonderful.

Mawimbi earns it's tripadvisor #1 rating in Isla Holbox. If you haven't been "Go", if you have been "Go Again".

Room Tip: Try one of the rooms fronting on the beach...
