Ranked #6 of 20 Hotels in Holbox Island

Reviewed August 12, 2013

We just returned from a week at this lovely all inclusive on Holbox. (8/3- 8/10/13)
Would definitely return.

Rooms: We were informed on arrival that there was no record of our coming to the hotel on that date 8/3/13. However, we were quickly given room 102. A very nice room with a rather small balcony, but close (relatively speaking, all rooms a very close to everything at the resort - beach to lobby). After a few days in room 102, our ac broke. We were quickly moved to room 107. This was a larger room with seating area, larger balcony, hammock, and no neighbors above us. It appeared to be the same junior room price, bit just a much better room. Great for us, and much improved ac.
The rooms and entire grounds are meticulous. We found the beds, pillows, and linens to be very comfortable. Not to mention, the extra touches of fresh flowers and towel sculptures on our bed and bathroom floors each day.

Food: excellent! Especially for an all inclusive with one restaurant, we were in a similar resort (bel air collection in Cancun in March 2013). We had planned to venture out for a dinner or two, but never did. The service at the restaurant and on the beach was impeccable. Perhaps a little business like at times, but eventually warmed up as the days went on. Besides, I'm really not there to make friends. I just expect the service to be good. And, it was. There could have been a few more ceviche offerings, like daily, as this is a very popular dish on this fishing island.
Every meal, including breakfast, offered items cooked to order. The French toast is not to be missed.

Beach: Striking! Seemed to be ever changing depending on the weather, but never disappointing. Lots of mosquitos, but only at times. Easily kept at bay by Bull Frog and Deep Woods Off insect repellant. Iguanas around, dogs playing in the ocean (which were a pleasure to watch, but never a nuisance), and a raccoon on the beach at night sometimes.
Yes, the stars on the beach at night are truly something to behold. Especially, if you live in a city.

The town: we loved it there. Would ride the bicycles everywhere in the mornings.
Btw. The hotel bicycles are one thing that could be vastly improved. They were rideable, but check before leaving. Sometimes tires grossly under inflated. Also, if you get going too fast, the rusty bike chain would come off leaving you in a bind (unless you know how to get it back on again, leaving your hands greasy).
Again, as a complete dog lover, there were lots of seemingly happy dogs around town. They hang out in store front or home doorways, walk with their owners etc. no leashes, just business as usual for all. We only saw one cat during our visit. When we asked a waiter about the lack of feline presence, he told us that there were only 4 (known to him, at least) cat owners on the island.

Tours: didn't do whale shark due to the lengthy time, choppy water to get there, and confirmation of such by other visitors. They did say it was impressive. We went on the 3 island, 3 hour tour, and loved it. The flamingos are beautiful, as is the water.

Would definitely pay extra for private transport to ferry from airport.
We used Eduardo's company mentioned in previous reviews. Our driver, Charlito(spelling) left something to be desired. On the way to Holbox in a giant SUV- very nice- he was happy to stop etc. but, he drove like a mad man. He was also in such a hurry to deposit us a the ferry, he could not be bothered with a "thank you" for the 25.00/20% tip we gave him. On the way back, in a 4 door chevy of some sort, he brought his ample sized girlfriend. The two had a lovely chatty conversation in the front seats, as we frequently requested extra air conditioning to the back. This was necessary because he and girlfriend were comfy up in the front seats with girlfriends healthy girth blocking the majority of air getting to the back. Again, he drove like a mad man, passing cars abruptly on the two lane road, etc. No offers to stop etc. Oh well...

Ferry ride is nice, and easy. Lots of golf cart taxies await you for trip to the hotel. Front desk arranged prompt taxi service for our departure the night prior to leaving.

And, a very unexpected pleasure from the hotel, was our departure box breakfast/lunch. We were leaving before breakfast. To our surprise, the night shift person at the desk handed us a big bag when we returned the keys. Inside we found sandwiches, water bottles, and fruit. How nice! We hadn't requested it. A very special touch. Definitely left us with a good impression.

Hope to return to this great hotel on Holbox in the future. I'd really stay just about anywhere on the island. Very nice,

Better in real life than you imagine. Unusually unspoilt and undeveloped beach which makes for a new experience with all the bird wildlife around, and it´s on the doorstep. Super property with good layout and high spec finish throughout. The use of wood is very nice and our private hut like room was a joy to wake up in with the sea views right in front of you. Wife kept commenting on how nice the bathroom was which I've never heard her do before. Food is good here with some great Mexican dishes as well as more international type dishes. It was all great and the staff very warm and welcoming. Used the swimming pool in the evenings and it was always very clean and they have well kept gardens all around and plenty of greenery. Water sports are easy available and hotel will happily arrange anything for you. Great spot to rewind and had a very enjoyable vacation, although I´d say it is worth staying even for a few nights if you are in that part of the world.

Going to an "off the beaten path" location, we were not sure what to expect. Wow, it was more than we even could imagine. Right from check in, which only took 10 minutes, we were impressed. A porter took our bags, covered them with his raincoat (as it was raining for the first and only time during our one week stay) and got us to our second floor room right away. The room was quite large with a king bed, balcony, tons of closet space, separate shower and w.c. and a good sized sink and dressing area. More than enough space. They supplied plenty of clean towels each day when they made up the room and restocked the fridge. We would reccomend the all-inclusive, the food was fantastic. A great variety and well prepared and presented. The staff was right there to offer drinks and to take away any dishes you were done with. The meal staff were as attentative as any other resort or cruise ship that we have been on. The grounds were a beautiful arrangement of gardens and paths to the beach covered by a massive canopy of trees and vines opening up onto a very nice beach. Even though the resort was full, there was never a shortage of chairs and the bar staff brought out our "snacks" and were ever-present offering drinks. The front dest were excellent in helping to arrange taxis, rentals and tours. They offered advise and answered all of our questions with a smile. For anyone who wants a laid-back, restful vacation, this is a place you should seriously consider.

Room Tip: upper floors have no mosquito problems

We stayed a week on this charming hotel, on an island where all buildings are palapas style, no big constructions. Only golf carts on this island. We loved our stay!Regarding the hotel itself:
Pros:
- Very nice rooms
- Nice gardens
- Excellent food (always some Mexican food on top of more common food)
- BEACH!!! Pristine and shallow water. NO SEA WEEDS at all. Probably the best beach I ever seen in Mexico. Very long, almost desert. You just have to bend to pick up shells.
- Very quiet hotel (does not feel crowded at all; we had the beach for ourselves.)
Cons:
- mosquitoes (but repellent will do the mostly the job)
- slow service sometimes
- internet access is not consistent
The island: BEAUTIFUL!!! White sand, pristine water everywhere, a lot of flamingos and birds.
Rent a cart (cheap $12 for an hour) and go East or West on the only road, it is breath taking.
We did not take the tour to see the whale sharks because the trip was too long, but we went on the snorkeling one (Cabo Catoche) for half of the day, swam with turtles and many colorful fishes. They serve you a ceviche on the boat as well and stop you somewhere in paradise. I recommend "Puesta del sol" tours http://www.actiweb.es/puestadelsol/
Just go, it is SOOO worth it!

We stayed here for 5 nights before going to Cancun for nights.

Honestly,Words cannot describe this beautiful little Island. "heaven on earth" "absolute paradise" "untouched beauty" "freedom" "peace and tranquility"

Food - AMAZING - Delicious especially the omelette for breakfast made fresh in front of you with whatever ingredients you want. The steak for dinner was divine.
Accommodation - AMAZING - extremely comfortable - from home to home.
People - AMAZING - very laid back and humble
Staff - AMAZING - they go out of their way to help with any questions or inquiries. Nothing is too much trouble.

Hire a golf cart taxi, its great fun and perfectly safe, very reasonably priced.

Do the whale shark tour - we were looked after sooo well, but unfortunately we did not get to see any whale sharks which was disappointing. At the time, there was a storm in the Pacific Ocean and I think this is the reason why they did not show their beautiful faces :((( We were able to snorkel and saw some lovely big tropical fishes. We also ate cerviche, which is a white fish marinated in lemon juice mixed with tomatoes, red onion and coriander. We also came to a lovely sand bank and saw pelicans and pink flamingos. Absolutely out of this world !!

You must try burritos, enchaladas, tacos and all the other delicious Mexican delights.

Cancun was very disappointing. No culture, no history, nothing but shopping malls Wish we had just given Cancun a miss and stayed on this paradise island for an extra 2 days.

Enough said - go for it !!!!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED

Thank you to everyone at Paraiso Del Mar for making our holiday truly wonderful and memorable. I hope I will be able to return one day

Room Tip: All the rooms are amazing, but if you can afford a bungalow facing the beach, even better.

The ten days spent here were delightful. We are used to travel in a golf buggy as we both play the game, so we were experts on our Island transport. The room was colourful, interesting and a good space to sleep in. The Island wildlife is varied and the gardens and surrounding plant life is very lush. The days are long and as we are both over 40 took full advantage of resting on the beach for as long as possible. The whole trip was as good as we had hoped it would be and a whole lot more. The Island has managed to remain respectful of it´s natural gifts and it was a wonderful chance to see that it can be done. Let's hope it never changes.

This is a one in a million places to visit and stay. The tranquility is unbeatable and the beach and nature exceptional. Very pleased that the hotel and rooms lived up to the pictures and the staff just add that extra touch of personality and give top service, and we have travelled the world staying in many 5 star hotels. One day I forgot my hat on a sunbed by the pool and within an hour it was hand delivered back to me by a staff member who recognised it and found out which room we were in! Food excellent and overall a really great holiday.
