Reviewed January 4, 2010

I have been meaning to write this review for a long time. In fact I only joined Trip Advisor originally to write this review.

Holbox Island is beautiful, fun, quiet and romantic. It took me about 10 minutes to realise this when we arrived by speed boat.

Casa Sandra is the best place to stay on the Island. It is made up of the main building, then separate apartment buildings, as well as a couple of solo cubana's (might have the wrong word for this).

We originally were booked to stay in the solo cabana but I felt it was too close to the road (not really a road, more a dust track with only golf carts driving along, I loved this road!!!) and the room was not as nice as I imagined. So after speaking to the very friendly lady at reception we changed our room to a suite, it was truely beautiful. It was the 2nd best room in the place and many of the pictures on the website (the chaise lounges for example) are taken in this room.

The room has a balcony with a hammoch that overlooks the sea and sunsets, the bed is enormous, and the bathrooms are clean and cute. The best thing about the entire layout of Casa Sandra is that everything is thoughtout so well. It's hard to explain, but all I can say is that it very well managed by someone who obviously has a lot of pride in their job.

Coming back to the sunset, I mentioned our balcony but in truth it is better to use on of the sun beds on the front of the hotel as they have the most romantic view. Wow, I wish I was their now!!!

Anyway, enough talking, please view our pictures.....

Final points: Restaurant is the best on the island (the Argentinian steak house on the roof overlooking the town is also amazing) the restaurant staff are very nice however like to leave on time, the cooks, cleaners and managers are all lovely... a very homely feel...
Swimming pool is average sized, furniture around is excellant, cushions so comfy....

The rooms here are very nice at first appearance. Beautiful stone floors, comfortable beds, large bathroom with a tub and walk in shower. We got a 'discount' walk-up rate for $280 including tax. When we arrived, the power was out and we had to come back in an hour to confirm reservation. Then when we went to check in, the service was slow and the woman seemed distracted and insincere. We had three bags and had to lug our bags from the street to our room (and back out when we left) without any help. The pool was dirty, needed to be filtered or something. When we got to our room, we realized that the very beachy conch-shell shower head had very little water pressure. We ended up having to use the tub. I have thick hair and had trouble rinsing my hair in the tub, so tried the shower. Inside the shower was a light bulb dangling from the ceiling--didn't look safe. Then when I went to turn on the shower, I got shocked from both the hot and cold water handles. When we went to get the free continental breakfast, we were ignored for the most part of an hour . I think we were forgotten because we were on the patio or something. The staff would come out and drop off one item and then not return for about 20 minutes. As we went to check out, the power had gone out again. Just the whole time, we felt like an inconvenience rather than a guest, and for that rate, we felt we deserved better service. The best thing about our stay was the bed. It was very comfortable with soft sheets, and we got a great night's sleep. We also stayed at Mawimbi for $90/night on Holbox and it was much better in every way (except for the bed).

We arrived on Holbox without a reservation & had a taxi driver take us around to 5 or 6 of the top places listed on Trip Advisor & on Holbox.com. Casa Sandra was head & sholders above the rest. It ticked all our boxes: Had a CLEAN pool, CLEAN rooms, bar, resturant, right on the beach with daybeds & beach charis. It was a little bit more expensive than some of the others but so much better. Everywhere else we looked was neally empty but Casa Sandra was nearly full. There was only one room to choose from which was right as the back with no view, bit the room was loverly & very comfortable. Our 4 night stay was perfect, the staff were great, breakfast included was just coffee & bread but the homemade jam was fantastic & we were usally so full from the awesome meals in town from the night before that is all we felt like (however there is a full breakfast menu available), We had organised the Whale Skark trip with the taxi driver when we arrived but the Hotel can also organise everthing. It is a small Island & everyone knows everyone. See http://www.travelyucatan.com/isla_holbox_mexico.php for dinning recomendations they are spot on.
This Island is perfect for those people who love the beach/island life, there are no 5 star all inclusive places full of over exited americans. It is peacfull & friendly. The whale shark experience is incredable & a must do. The seafood is as good or better than anywhere else I have been. I didn't go fishing but judgeing from the quality of the fish available it would have been a great way to spend a day or two.

The CasaSandra hotel is a pure breath of fresh air. My partner and I typically stay in Kimpton and other 5 star hotels and the service at this hotel can give them all a run for their money. We just left Holbox but have already booked two more trips this year and cannot wait to get back. We got to know the staff who were absolutely amazing. The rooms were always spotless and the beach was gorgeous. We are a gay couple and were relieved to be accepted into the CasaSandra family with open arms.

The Holbox island is probably one of the last paradises on earth. The staff at Casa Sandra was very friendly and took excellent care of us during the whole stay.

Beautiful rooms with lots of nice details.

The food must be made in heaven. It is a shame we didn`t have time to try the whole menu...

The drinks are very nice, especially the Mohitos.

The outdoor area is beautiful with view to the sea on the mainside and the great pool and the bar on the other side.

We will recommend a stay at this wonderful place for people who appreciate nice food, drinks, rooms, sevice in surroundings cut out of a romantic movie.

Thank you very much for a perfect vacation.

Lot of Love from Åshild Wærnes and Astrid Petrikke Danielsen.

This is a fantastic place to stay and Isla Holbox is simply a paradise. I'm so surprised by the comments on this site about this hotel. We just got back yesterday from 7 nights at Casa, we had two rooms in the main building - 5 people in total including two young children (3 and 6), 1 young adult (23) and 2 adults and everybody had a great time. The service was just perfect - friendly without being overbearing - anytime you had a question you could go in the office and get help. the setting is staggeringly beautiful - right on the beach. True, there is a "road" between the beach and hotel but the road is all sand with people walking, biking and in golf carts. We stayed right in front and never heard a thing at night. While it's true that Casa Sandra is far more expensive than the other hotels on the island (so relative value could be in question) we also thought it was by far the nicest hotel. It's just close enough to the little town to be highly convenient yet far enough away that it's not too busy. The management of the hotel is very helpful and friendly (thank you Bertha and Jose Luis!) and the wait staff and room staff very warm and helpful as well. It was also nice that many of the guests of the hotel were Mexican - we never felt like this was a hotel set up in service to Americans (like much of Mexico).

Our only complaint was the highly inconsistent food. For a hotel at that level, the dinners should be much better. We ate there for dinner the first night b/c we had just arrived. The food was almost inedible and was slow to table. Then another night we had also been out and about the whole day and so just stayed "home" for dinner and, while much better than the first night, it was still so-so at best. That said, the breakfasts were delicious (those fresh juices are amazing!) and served efficiently and the lunches by the pool are fantastic (great quac and ceviche).

Too late we discovered in town that Pirate's Cave (Cove?) was the best place to eat for dinner so we went there the last two nights. Superb food and service - hands down the best place to eat on the Isla.

For a hotel to make a large mixed-age family happy - and a fairly well-traveled family -- is hard to do, and we all felt it was one of the best vacations we had had and Casa Sandra was a big part of that.

It's a great island overall and we truly hope it doesn't get spoiled like the rest of the Mexican Caribbean.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
For a long time owner, Sandra, wanted to write by the sea. She went in search of a remote world, quiet, where the blue was obvious. One day, she landed in Cancun and the attraction of the Mayan land was overwhelming. She took a small plane and flew over the island of Holbox.Nothing was more attractive to her than the Feast of the colors of nature, barefoot fishermen with their gold teeth, women weaving hammocks or sheathed with their heels in the sand. "I want to do something here, " she said and began to imagine in her head this project now called "the hotel with a human touch" on this very beach. The land of more than 150 species of birds, whale shark, or Damero world's largest fish, mangroves in each corner, all were an inspiration to this artist. Then she wanted to welcome friends from around the world and to express, through a hotel on the island of Holbox, a point of view on life: "peace and art are a great treasure for humans. " Because of this she thought of a place that is romantic, sexy, creative, where the personalized, warm, rustic atmosphere in a luxurious twenty rooms that look to the sea, where one could meet the privacy and whims of its guests. All done out of love and passion. The same place where one can dream and create, and in the best case, where one can rest. The joy of giving and expressing a new way of caring for guests, has been the commitment of the hotel. Every detail has a reason: from the small art gallery with paintings by renowned artists to the beautiful furniture that inhabit the halls.Feelings, emotions, poetry, touches of color, aromas of black coffee, hammocks, fabric on the balconies, fluffy sheets, the sea at every angle, and romantic evenings create the magic of the "place of your dreams." ... more   less
