We had a great night at El Chapulim. We really enjoyed the personal attention of both waiter Carlos and chef Eric, who not only brought us our food and drinks but also explained what was in it and where it came from. The food was the best we had during a 3 week trip throughout the Yucatan. All ingredients are locally produced, and the chef uses this palette to create a pure work of food art. The dishes they serve are great in itself, but we also witnessed that the chef is very willing to improvise with regard to the (special) wishes of his costumers. So when you're in Holbox, make sure you go there.

We stumbled across this place down a side street and were so glad we found it, although sadly it was our last night, or we would have been back. There is no menu - the waiter gave us the options and we chose ceviche and fish tacos.

We also started with the house cocktail - no idea what was in it, but it was so good we had two!

The ceviche was delicious, with mango and avocado. And the fish tacos probably some of the best I've eaten. Taco sauce was hot!! The place was packed while we were there and the chef came out to enquire how we enjoyed the meal. Both good signs as far as I'm concerned.

Go and eat there. You won't be disappointed.

The owner Eric is entering a mouthwatering dish of mixed seafood in a curry sauce to the food festival and claims it will be the winner, I believe him! The seafood was so tender, the octopus literally melted in your mouth and the sauce was so rich and flavorful you were tempted to lick your plate!

We enjoyed our night out here. It has a very cozy ambience and we really enjoyed the live band they had playing.

Eric, the owner of this tiny little hideaway tucked on the ground floor below a tequilla bar, next to a tortilla factory, is one of the secret treasures of Isla Holbox. To find this restaurant you stay on the main street, Tiburon Ballena, past the park center and going towards the beach. It is in the first block from the park, on the right. If you go too far you get to Buena Vista and Faro Viejo on the beach.

In a big city this kind of place would be by advance reservation or invitation only, and would open on odd nights at the chef's discretion. Eric is content to sit on his hands and engage with passerbys while keeping the burners warm on his grill. He cooks to order, although he keeps a small menu to help you out.

If you are like me and like to choose your restaurant by the chef, then Chapulim is for you. When we have been fishing we sometimes take our fresh catch to Eric to prepare, and leave the style up to him. He is brilliant.
