“Italian, classy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2014 via mobile

La Guaya - Italian, classy, with very friendly staff and (I assume) owner - even when we bumped into her the next day. Menu had some unusual choices but they brought a taste out for you to try. Cook their own bread and had a great tuna steak. Nice.

“Great view of kitchen from the bar!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2014

We came to this restaurant at recommendation of other travellers and were not disappointed. We arrived mid-evening to no seats at tables so opted to sit and eat at the bar where we had a wonderful, overview of the kitchen and both the chef and sous-chef. I had the fish carpaccio for an app, sort of a deconstructed ceviche with thinky sliced fish(grouper?) drizzled with lemon juice and EVOO, tasted very fresh. As a main I could not resist the house-made fettucine with gorgonzola sauce with pink peppercorns. Delicious, pasta was perfectly cooked slightly al-dente not mushy which is easily done with home-made fresh pasta. My friend had the seafood pasta , also very good , very generous serving with lots of shrimp, calamari , possibly octopus. Dessert of homemade chocolate gelato was silky with a deep chocolate flavor. I had the Lavender Panna Cotta which was a bit too firmly gelatinized texture wise but had good flavour. Nice wine-list with several wines available by the glass. Sitting at the bar was definitely educational as well as entertaining. Service was good. Meal with app, main, dessert and two drinks came to about $500pesos before added tip.

“No kidding-I am not a sheep, lol”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014

Well, we went because everyone else said it was "so awesome". I ordered the lobster ravioli, and yes it was good, but I seriously got maybe 8 tiny ravioli's in my bowl. Lol. It was like an appy. And expensive. If I am paying alot for a meal, i expect to get some food. Same thing with my husband's meal. By far the smallest portions of food on our whole 5 week trip, anywhere..........and by far the most costly!!!!!!

“Holbox haute cuisine.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014

For a little teeny island, Holbox has some pretty amazing chefs. La Guaya is one of those special places. This was probably our favorite aside from Raices & Zarabanda. Located in the "mall" (hahaha) near the zocalo, La Guaya sits across from a pretty little craft/clothing store owned by a big, friendly guy & his big, friendly black lab. We'd shopped there earlier in the week & as we ate our last dinner on our last night on Holbox, we watched the man & his dog close up shop & amble on home. Everywhere on this island has this lovely, comfortable feel. But back to La Guaya. Great cocktails, nice wine list. Our server was an absolute delight. Our party shared a delicious fresh snook carpaccio, a roe pasta & a grilled snook dinner (snook was the catch of the day). There was live music - a combo of very talented musicians (one of whom we recognized as a jeweler from NOA, a beautiful little jewelry store next to Viva Zapata). Our next-door table mates were a couple from Canada who we shared a boat with to get to Holbox from Chiquila. That's the charm of Holbox. Like vacationing in Mexican Mayberry. Everyone knows everyone.

“OMG!! The food was outstanding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2014

Ate dinner here on Valentine's Day and was not disappointed in any way. From the ultimate in attentive service to the food served we were very impressed. The Celery, Orange and Chilli marmalade was so delicious I wish I had the nerve to ask for the recipe. Our appetizers (cheese plate & Caprese Salad) and main course and choice from the desert tray was one of the best meals we have eaten in our travels. We had gorgonzola tortellini and lobster ravioli as mains. We would have loved to eaten here again but with limited time and other choices and having to come back to snow and cold, we unfortunately were unable to go back. We will return one day and hope that this beautiful location in the mall will still be operating with the excellent skills of the chef still turning out the wonderful choices and service on this extensive menu. Meal cost about $90US with tip for a bottle of wine, two appetizers, two main courses and one dessert. There was live music while we dined. Well worth it.
