Owner description: Conducting Responsible Whale Shark Tours, Research & Conservation in Holbox Island, Mexico. Every year, although usually solitary, whale sharks congregate around Holbox Island between June and September, when the ocean becomes especially plankton rich. They are at 25 to 40 miles of distance. For this reason we use a very SAVE AND FAST SPECIAL BOAT with 2 motors 300HP each (600HP). You’ll be traveling in small groups from 6 to 10 people maximum a day. We provide all snorkeling equipment including WET SUIT (way better than the life jacket) to make your in-water experience safe and confortable. Reserve Your Tour Now Available also Exclusive Private Charters This is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE, enjoy it!

IF you are going to do a whale shark tour in Holbox, do it with Mawimbi ONLY. It was the best, most comfortable, fastest boat with the best, most experienced guide. You get A LOT MORE than just whale sharks with Mawimbi. Totally worth every penny. We saw dolphins, sea turtles, flamingos, sting rays and they drove us thru the mangrove.

They made special vegetarian lunch sandwiches for us which were so yummy.

We saw our boat zoom by other tiny boats, Mawimbi is the only boat that takes you to a far away spot where you see about 20 whale sharks. Other boats went to an area where there were 2 whale sharks.

Totally worth the price. I would say that this boat is FAST and so is not for small children, our 5 year old was horrified. But you are in best hands with Mawimbi.

This was an amazing day. We ended up finding a group of whalesharks and everyone had plenty of opportunities to swim with them as much as they wanted. So, you get dumped in, right in front of them and wait for them to hove into view. The first thing you see is a big school of good-sized fish, who are also feeding on the plankton. Then out of the gloom this mouth appears and you are supposed to turn around and start swimming in the same direction it is, so as to let it pass you on its way by. You get better at it eventually, but the first couple of times it can be a bit of flailing while you try to avoid running into it. Still, amazing. Our tour then went snorkeling at a reef, and then to some marshy sand flats for ceviche and snacks. Yum! What a day! It's worth it.

We stayed at the Hotel Mawimbi and we also booked a trip with the hotel for thier whale shark tour. They do charge a premium but there is a reason for that- On this island you get what you pay for! Earlier in the week we went out with Mextreme on a whale shark tour and it was a disaster. The Mextreme guides did not speak english, and the boat broke down. Turns out they did not even have a radio on the boat to call for help! Mawimbis boat is faster, much more comfortable and they are concerned for thier passengers safety. The crew and guide were great, spoke english, were very attentive and it was a great day, definately worth the extra money. After having the trip experience with Mextreme earlier in the week, we were glad to pay the additional money to go out with Mawimbi it was soooo much more enjoyable.
Many of the Holbox whale tours are fisherman taking you out on small fishing boats. Mawimbi has a great boat that is made for cruising, not commercial fishing. And the guides and crew are exactly that- guides and crew, not fisherman...
