“An unforgettable stay at Isla Hol-Box...”
Reviewed June 2, 2009

First of all, in the midst of the global mass panic concerning Influenza A H1N1 (formerly known as swine and mexican flu respectively), there's definitely no worry about the illness in the whole Yucatan area, so don't be hesitating to come to the peninsula and Isla Hol-Box in particular!

We had a terrific stay at the Elements hotel and although the island as well as the rest of the peninsula is suffering from the backdropped tourism, Maurizio, 'Mau', welcomed us with a well-meant smile. The rooms are very contemporary with a nice hacienda twist and provided us with the best nights of rest since our travel began 2 months ago. The very hospitable staff really thinks along in exploring the island; an excursion to swim with gigantic whale sharks as the ultimate experience! The beach is within reach of a 3-minute walk.

Summarizing the following words apply to the Elements hotel:
* Very friendly, hospitable staff;
* Nice, clean rooms;
* Great service;
* Really good value for money!

We are writing (finally) to THANK EVERYONE at the Hotel Elements Holbox for their help in getting us off the island (at night) in less than 15 mins for a family emergency. My husband and I had booked several nights stay at the Hotel Elements Holbox to celebrate our 30th anniversary, but unfortunately we received an emergency cell phone call to tell us that our daughter had suffered severe head injuries from a snowboarding accident.

My husband only had to go to the front desk to tell them what happened and next thing we knew we were wisked away immediately. They had arranged to return our rented golf cart (which we received a full refund for - thank you Super Monkeys), had a fisherman walk away from his dinner to help drive us back to Chiquila and stayed with us until we were safely aboard the fishing boat. Our eyes were filled with tears of worry for our daughter but we must tell these individuals THANK YOU. We were truly touched by your compassion and concern for our daughters well being and ensuring we got to her as quickly as possible.

We wish to tell you that she is doing much better now and our whole family will never ever forget your kindness. We plan on returning to Holbox and when we do, we will be honored to stay at your wonderful hotel knowing that we will be well taken care of.

Thank you.

For people looking for quiet, rest, and relaxation Holbox is the place to be. Holbox itself is a quaint, sleepy little town, but the town center can be bustling. There is nothing in the town that is much more than a 10-minute walk - and walking and golf carts is how you get around on the island. There are a few trucks, but they are strictly for transport of building materials. There is no need for cars here. At 7 miles long and a mile wide, it is small enough that after a few days you start to recognize and get to know other visitors on the island, as well as the local restaurant and shopkeepers. We were in Holbox before the busy season when the whale sharks arrive.

We stayed at Elements. Elements is off one of the main offshoots of the town center (but on the way to the lagoon), and at four stories, is one of the taller buildings on the island. Bright white with blue trim, it sits majestically on the edge of the jungle. It is far enough from the center of town that it is quiet at night, but still only a short walk to restaurants and shops. The beach is 200 steps from the entrance of the hotel, an easy 2-minute walk – an on-the-beach location is the only thing I wish Elements had. But the beach is very close…

We found Elements from the promo link on the Holbox website (holboxisland.com). We booked our room via the internet and paid in advance with our credit card. Our host, Julian, welcomed us upon arrival with a warm, “Welcome home.” Over the course of our stay, he treated us like family. When we left, he said he would be ready for us when we were ready to come home again. Service was great.

The lobby is open and airy. It is tastefully decorated expressing the four elements at each corner: wind, water, air, fire. Julian was all too happy to tell us all about it.

Our room was nice – and exactly as pictured on the website . The room had A/C, dehumidifier, and a fan. It was very clean and nicely decorated – simple and unpretentious. We were given a cute little shampoo/soap package, the contents of which I saw for sale in town. We had a reliable wireless connection provided free of charge, and it was refreshing to have no phone or TV in the room. The room was incredibly well priced.

The rooftop deck is one of the highest points on the island and was a HUGE highlight for us during our stay at Elements. We had breakfast there and watched the sun rise. It was the place to be at sunset, and the darkness and lack of light pollution allowed us to drink in the stars at night. The rooftop deck was truly spectacular.

We felt safe and comfortable at Elements and highly recommend it to anyone who truly wants to get away from it all.

For all the Green people, Julian tries to keep his carbon footprint small – prints documents on the front and back of the paper, then uses the paper again as scrap. When he is all done with the scraps, he hands it over to someone else to make the “handmade” paper!

Side note and FYI: All of Mexico’s beaches are “public,” but private property owners can restrict access by not allowing public to cross their property in order to get to the beach. This is mentioned as point of information, not because it is an issue at Elements.

My wife and I have been to Holbox on different occasions and stayed at several hotels ranging from $70 to $250 a night. We visited in Dec before Christmas and were very happy with the $75 rate which included continental breakfast. Julian the manager makes you feel at home the moment you come in the door. The views from the rooftop deck are some of the best on the Isla and a big part of the charm. Internet was very important to us as we still have to run our business at home and we found Elements to be the only one that could provide this service to us, uninterrupted. Should be noted that the $250 place we stayed at did not offer free internet and NO internet in the rooms, and are the same distance from the the very nicest part of the beach as Elements. Hotel chef Sebastien puts together one of the finest breakfasts on Holbox at a very reasonable price. He will do special meals as well. Excellent ceviche and fresh guacomole. He also works evenings at Juans downtown, make sure you stop by. Eduardo and rest of the cleaning staff are top notch, very helpful, very thorough. Great towel art ! and they provided laundry service as well. Rooms are spacious and clean with nice large bathrooms. Julian offers great tour services as well.
This is a great bang for your buck on Holbox and an exceptionally well-run boutique hotel. Enjoy your stay!

If you are thinking in visiting Holbox I strongly recommend stay at “Elements Hotel”. This is a very small hotel located few steps from the ocean, with very good service, and friendly staff. They help us a lot and make us feel special. We spent a really quality time at the terrace of the hotel talking and seeing the sky while drinking.
Holbox is a magnificent island with a lot of things to do in contact with the nature.
