Beachfront Hotel La Palapa Adult Oriented
Ranked #5 of 20 Hotels in Holbox Island

We arrived at the La Palapa Hotel in Isla Holbox on the 13th March. The warm friendly welcome in the reception made us feel at home right away. This was a perfect start of our stay in Isla Holbox after the 3,5 hour bus ride from Cancun.
When we walked down to the beach,- about 50m from the reception a fantastic view of miles and miles of white sand and turquoise/green sea greeted us.
Here you can walk for hours and have it all to yourself! Almost no tourists and the atmosphere totally calm and exclusive.
The restaurant at the La Palapa Hotel with Chef Beppe from Sicily is a whole chapter to itself!!
With only a breakfast menu we let him decide all our meals and it was a fantastic combination of mexican and sicilian/italian surprises every time we sat down to eat in the incredibly cozy Palapa Restaurant!!
We highly recommend this extraordinary place to all of you.
If you want fantastic beaches, fantastic food, a small mexican town as colorful as you'll ever see and friendly smiling faces everywhere......go to Isla Holbox and stay at the La Palapa Hotel.

We only had a short stay at Isla Holbox, but it was great! We stayed at LaPalapa Hotel and that would be exactly where we would go back to! The room was clean and had daily maid service. The shower worked well as did the A/C. The grounds were clean and the beach was nice and only a few steps away. No golf carts in front of this Hotel. The restaurant was delightful with gourmet food! The price was a good value. The people were friendly. We liked watching the chef go out in the morning and get fresh fish off the boats as they came to shore. The Hotel is very close to all the town action, but there is no problem with noise. What more can I ay except try you will like it! We were there from Feb 15th thru Feb 18th and the weather was great.

We stayed at two different hotels while on Holbox, both of which we enjoyed . Our last four nights were spent at La Palapa, first four at Holbox Dream (see review). I have to say there were several others (Los Mapaches, Casa Tortuga, Mawimbi, Casa Iguana...) that looked nice as well, at least from the beach. So you might be spoiled for choice on Holbox.
That said, we would gladly return to La Palapa and felt we made an excellent choice in staying there.
The things we liked about La Palapa:
Location- We liked the beach it was on (no golf cart path in front). Nice mature palms. Seemed to be ample seating and shade with the palms. The town is right behind the hotel so it is easy walking distance to restaurants, etc. The hotel feels like it is part of the town but enough removed from it as well so as to feel quiet and tranquil (it is a quiet town).
Room- We stayed in #8 which was on the upper level. The best part was the enormous balcony with full sized hammock, small table and 2 chairs. It was a great place to watch the sun set over the ocean (although partially blocked by the palms) and we spent as much time as possible there. The internet connection box for the hotel was right on our balcony, so great reception. The room was also enormous and could have easily accomodated a family with a few kids. There were 2 double beds and room for a couple of rollaway beds to be brought in if needed. Decor was pleasant, maybe a tad dated, but clean and comfortable. The beds seemed comfy to us (my husband wants me to write that his pillow had a sour mildew smell- he made me sniff it but I did not notice a smell). We did not use the AC or ceiling fans due to unfortunately cool weather, but it was there. Windows had screens and bathroom was good except for toilet that was a little tricky (would run and run after flushing) until you figured it out. Water pressure good. There were small night stand dressers to put belongings, and a rod and hangers.
We saw a room on the lower floor belonging to another couple and it was smaller and had one king size bed but also had a built in hair dryer, which ours lacked. The only things I would have added to make it really perfect would be mini fridge and lockbox in the room.
Staff: They were always cordial, every one. Wilfredo at reception was very helpful with suggesting to us a golf cart for our last hour on the island (so that we could spend it in a fun way) which we were allowed to drive ourselves to the ferry and leave there. He saw to having it returned, which was nice and convenient.
Rate- you really can't complain about anything with a rate of 72 usd for a good hotel right on the beach. That said, the continental breakfast that was included was so bad that we ended up skipping it. White toast, weak coffee and orange drink (sacrilege in Mexico) instead of orange juice. Much better to get empanadas and tomallitos at Las Panchas right behing the hotel.
Another thing is that this hotel seems to attract families with children as well as couples. There was some annoying noise from guests with children and others who were loud talkers. Not the hotel's fault. However, somewhat annoying (in our opinion) was the music that they would play in the restaurant. It was usually not bad music (except the techno stuff), but it could be heard somewhat from the beach, and I would rather just hear the ocean.
We did not use the restaurant (which was Italian oriented) as there are plenty of local, inexpensive and authentic Mexican places nearby. There were a lot of Italian and some French guests who seemed to take every meal there, however, and not venture to the local places. That is a shame. I understand how it would be convenient to have a restaurant on site if you had children with you. I did see that you could walk up to the bar and get beers, smoothies, etc. to have on the beach.
Overall in comparing the two places we stayed: I'd give La Palapa the slight edge in the beach catagory (although same close proximity and similar beach) and for families since some rooms are huge and they have a restaurant. I'd give Holbox Dream the edge for room decor and overall ambiance, romance and tranquility. You can't go wrong either way really.
Tips: Look for a topic on the Holbox forum called "new local list". Print it and take it with you as it contains tips for delicious local food. We used it a lot- loved Las Panchas, Chacarito's (La Sirenita), Las Palmas, Pollo Feliz!
Island tour worthwhile. Renting a golf cart and exploring- lots of fun.
Going in February like we did- you may get cool/rainy weather.

Isla Holbox is a beautiful quiet - no cars! - island devoted to nature. We loved it. And even more the Hotel la Palapa, perfect location on the beach, quiet and the best italian food tasted in Mexico, thank you Giuseppe. My husband took the same pasta dish, for starters and for main... tells you how good it was, and coming from an Italian who loves cooking pasta ! Would recommend this place my eyes closed...

This hotel is conveniently located just a few steps from the beach and very close to downtown. It is a cozy place with a great staff always willing to help. Rooms are average but clean and with nice touches. One of the best things is the food, Giuseppe Genovese is both passionate about food and a great cook. You should definitely try his pastas and deserts.

If you want to recharge your batteries and get plenty of sleep, ask for a room far from the restaurant as it may get noisy at night and early in the morning.

Over all this is a great place to stay and it offers good value for money.
