A very charming town, with lots of local color and terrific restaurants. The city sits in a valley surrounded by lovely mountains. The marketplace is bustling and fun and the hike up to the pyramid is daunting, but thrilling.

We went some friends that are local to Cuernavaca and had a blast! We left Cuernavaca around 7:30 am during the week, stopped at the plaza market in Tepotzlan to have tamales y atole, and then started climbing! The climb was great: well-marked, with rustic rock-stairs, and shaded. There were ample places to stop and rest. I recommend going during the week so that you aren't competing for space with locals who go there for exercise on the weekends. Take water and money to pay to get in at the top so that you can climb onto the pyramid and snap some great shots. Oh! And there are no bathrooms, so keep that in mind. :)
Once you're done, don't forget to visit Tepoznieves in the town. They have AMAZING icecreams in all kinds of flavors! Don't miss it!

Tepotzlan is a colonial village outside of Cuernavaca. The streets are narrow & cobblestone. We loved visiting the pyramid & sipping cafe' con leche in the Square (Zocalo). The climb up to the pyramid is1,000 meters, straight up...ruins & awesome view of the valley.

Do not get discouraged. Climbing to the pyramid can be quite the challenge, especially with the altitude, but they have done a nice job with the rocks along the way and you can access the place without a problem. There are 4 trenches, the first one is the longest. The last requires you to go up some metal stairs with railing that are a far cry of what used to be there before. once you summit, you must pay 42 pesos to actually climb the pyramid. There are no signs at the bottom that tell you about it, so be prepared. But do contribute because once you climb the small pyramid, you feel your body filling up with energy and replenishing itself. the views of the town and mountains are phenomenal. There is even a little store up there- yup they have to follow the same route to bring up their supplies, quite remarkable. You will most likely see some "tejones" - raccoon looking like animals more interested in food than us...unless you have food to offer. Your energy filled body will make the descent in no time.
