Had very good looks at the Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Gannets plus other seabirds including a Harlequin Duck. We saw probably 50 grey seals. Capt. Vince and Ian gave us lots of helpful information about what we were seeing. They expressed their opinions on some conservation issues but this was genuine and not at all a reason to miss this wonderful tour. They seem to really love what they are doing. The boat was built with safety in mind and they obviously knew how to handle it.

It is very early in the tourist season and all the local businesses are gearing up for the busy summer in Cape Breton. Until all the kids get out of school, there are only a few of us strange people travelling at the moment, and it can be frustrating for both traveller and tour operators. This did not stop Bird Island Boat Tours from a full service tour.

There is a 4 person minimum for the tour to go, and I arrived early to wait anxiously for at least the 2 other people booked on the tour. I had decided to pay the extra fee, basically double, because I had already travelled here and it is one of the things a biologist and photographer must see! I was greeted warmly by Sheila, and after my fellow travellers from Europe arrived, we 3 set off on the Puffin Express with Captain Vince and his son Ian.

You can find out all you need about the boat and the tour itself from their website and the reviews here. I can add that they are a friendly family who are very proud of their 40+ years of service and it is well worth it to see the diverse bird life on the islands. Both Ian and Captain Vince are knowledgeable and have lots of ways to entertain adults and children alike.

For me it was a magical thing to see the atlantic puffins, great blue heron, and several grey seals in their natural habitat. I took a million photos and curse the fact that I need a better zoom lens.

You must go and experience this slice of Nova Scotia.

We were very pleased with our experience on the Bird Island Boat Tour. The captain is safety minded and very knowledeable about all aspects of the natural environment. He takes great pride in educating his guests on the various birds, seals, etc that will be viewed during the tour. After the tour, all guests are invited for oat cakes and hot tea in the gift shop. We found this tour good value for money, and for birders - it is a wonderful opportunity to see great cormorants, kittiwakes, puffins, razorbills etc. Support this local business, and enjoy the great scenery too.

A very good tour. However we should have gone on a better day. After we took off the weather got rough. Still a fun time was had by all.
