We stayed for 4 nights while attending a family wedding at a big hotel in nearby Niagara. We much preferred the local character of the Inn At Lock 7, and the passing ships were a great source of entertainment. The style is retro 70's motel chic, but super clean, well maintained, and comfortable. The owners are really friendly and a great source of local knowledge.

Stayed here for a weekend to attend a championship swim meet at Brock University. Quiet, simple but clean rooms away from any noise yet close enough to the University. My teens enjoyed watching the ships in the lock better than TV. Would recommend for a getaway to the St. Catharines Niagara area.

The Inn is a small 3 story hotel with 8 rooms on each floor. Access to each floor is by stairway (even the first floor which is actually a half flight down). Each room has a balcony with a wonderful close-up view of Lock #7 on the Welland Canal, which carries ships around Niagara Falls. A short walk gets you down to the edge of the canal where the ships are actually close enough to touch.

The hotel is an older property of cement block construction, which makes the rooms very quiet. There is no noise transmitted from neighboring rooms. The rooms are large and well kept; however, the bathrooms are a bit skimpy in size. A new amenity is wi-fi in each room. Rooms also have A/C, a refrigerator and cable TV. There are no phones in the rooms.

The inn is a family operation and the owners go out of their way to make sure that your stay is a good one. Breakfast is available in a cheerful area and consists of toast, locally-made muffins, juice and coffee. A list of the times ships are scheduled to pass is kept at the front desk and a scanner radio is available in the breakfast room.

The Inn is at the center of Niagara's wine country and there are dozens of wineries that offer tours and wine tasting opportunities. Niagara Falls, with its tourist attractions, is just a short drive away.

The Inn at Lock Seven is a good value and is a great place to stay and watch the ships pass.

If so, you're in for a treat. The night we stayed there were 4 or 5 ships heading through the canal, and I have to say it's pretty neat to see from the balcony of your room.

It seems there's a subculture of ship-watchers out there who really, really love this place. The rooms are a little musty and outdated, but if you're a shipwatcher, I don't think you'll let that stop you.
