My wife and I stayed at the Crane from May 7th - May 13th. Day one, we were taken to Bldg 9 which was just completed. The room was beautiful, however, it overlooked a construction site and all you heard was construction. We visited the front desk and were told we would be moved the next day. To our surprise, we were moved to room 554-A, the penthouse suite! The room was fabulous and the view was stunning. As others have noted, the air conditioning was spotty but was little noticed as the ocean breeze was constant. Although the suite was beautiful, we really would have preferred a smaller room! After a while, you get tired of all the walking!
Likes: The beach is stunningly beautiful, the grounds are developing and in the future will be absolutely fantastic. Also try the adjacent beaches to the Crane...very beautiful and quiet. Everywhere you walked you experienced a new and gorgeous panorama. The food is pretty good at both Crane restaurants. The pools were gorgeous and thoughtfully laid out. The staff was mostly friendly. Under construction is a small resort square that will house restaurants, shopping and entertainment. When completed, you will probably never have to leave the resort. The east coast of Barbados is beautiful, the west coast is crowded and hectic. Bridgetown is a wasted trip. Many fine restaurants on the west coast...we recommend Wispers. Rent a car and explore...you'll have a blast. We found the island to be very safe. We took many wrong turns into many neighborhoods and found the natives friendly and helpful. We would also like to mention Cutters Deli just yards from the Crane. Roger and his wife were friendly and his place is extremely convenient. Try the breakfast burrito. Also, the airport is fairly effiecient by island standards.
Dislikes: The historic pool bar opens at 3:30 pm...unbelievable! As others have stated...no place to buy a quick snack, sandwich etc. If you required a pool towel, put on your walking shoes. Only the old stable bar near Bldg 5 issued towels! You literally had to walk all over the grounds to get a towel. Inexecusable. At times the construction was noticeable. The beach is very rough. Don't think you're simply going to walk in and float. It's the Atlantic side! Pay attention as the undertow is very strong at times. We really didn't care for the hucksters selling their goods on the beach. The splash pools are not heated and at times useless as it was too cold to enter. Compared to Cuisinart in Anguilla, the beach day is a little rough. The Cuisinart treated you like a king...although you did pay a little more for the attention. Overall: Beautiful scenery, stunning beaches, good food, friendly people, a developing resort. Very good, but not yet great.

Just returned from a 3 day stay at the 'Crane' in early May '07. The last reviewer "hockey25" was bang-on. I agree with grading and everything said on his review. I would add that there is a gas station (about 25 min walk one way) with more amenties for breakfast etc) if you don't want to take a cab to Emerald Circle. There are few restaurants or things to do within walking distance of this place so bring your own 'fun' for the late evenings.

I cannot say how beautiful this place was.... the oceanfront rooms are a must (building 5) ....from the pink powder sand on Crane beach to the tasting menu at Zen.... All were well within what was stated by the resort and its patrons' reviews on this website.

I loved this place so much, I actually proposed to my girfriend right there on the beach at sunset (well, when the sun went down....as this place is on the East Coast)

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place or stay here again.
A great stay for a relaxed and quiet time. "If you want jetskis and volleyball.... your at the wrong place."

My fiancee and I stayed at the Crane from 5/5/07 - 5/12/07. I got a terrific deal by booking directly through The Crane's website & representatives. In addition to already discounted room rates b/c of low season & the discount given b/c of ongoing construction to the resort, we received a free room upgrade and a free night! In other words, we paid for a garden view suite and stayed in a one bedroom ocean view suite. The room we were given was on the top floor of building 5, which sits on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Atlantic ocean. It couldn't have been better. Below are some of my opinions/comments:

BEACH - Words cannot describe how great this beach is. Clear blue water, gentle sand, no rocks or garbage on the beach. Just perfect. Tip: if you want to use a boogeyboard, the front desk has free boards available for daily use. A+

POOLS - Also terrific. The Historic pool which overlooks Crane Beach is nice as is the new, larger pools which sit directly in the middle of the resort. There was always plenty of room to find a spot to sit and soak in the sunshine. It should also be said that you can see the ocean while sitting at the pool! If there is a negative, I would only suggest that the Crane look into putting more shady spots around the pool. They have only one section of shade which allows about 10-12 chairs. Tip: Walk over to the cliff near the large pools and look down...you just might see a turtle swimming by...we did! A

ROOM - As already stated, our room location was incredible. The room was extremely large and had a living room, full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, large whirlpool tub, and large bedroom. (See pictures of the rooms on the Crane's website...they really do look like that!!) As our room was located on the top floor, we also had a rooftop lounge with a whirlpool tub, BBQ grill and lounge chairs! This was a huge surprise! A couple downsides. The air conditioner works, but not all that good. Our room was never really cool, but it was never really warm..kind of in between. The ceiling fans do help though. Also, the water pressure is low during peak times (breakfast hour and dinner hour). Tip: Most rooms are equipped with DVD players, so dont forget some DVD's. A

RESTAURANTS - The Crane has 2 restaurants. Both are pricey. L'Azure features a wide range of items and the food tasted average. Zen, which features Asian food items including a sushi bar, was pretty good. Both overlook Crane Beach and are very well appointed. It is very disappointing that the Crane does not have a place to get a quick bite...like a snack shop or beachside cafe. Because of the fact we had a full kitchen, we decided to take a taxi ($20 USD roundtrip) to the Emerald City supermarket which is about 7 minutes away (The Crane also offers free shuttles to the supermarket on certain days.) The supermarket is very nice and has most everything that you would want. The prices are about 25-35% higher than average supermarkets. Even so, this is still a huge moneysaver. Tip: We also visited a small convenience store called Cutters which was down the street from the Crane. Its about a 5 minute walk. Cutters features Boars Head deli meats, small convenience items, and they also have pizza. B-

SERVICE - Service at the Crane falls in line with that of most other Caribbean resorts...relaxed, slow-paced, polite, low key. With the full kitchen and other room amenities, I felt I was a bit more self-sufficient here and really didn't need to rely on great service to enjoy my stay. Tip: Do take advantage of the Concierge desk for restaurant reservations, taxi arrangements, information gathering, etc....they were always extremely helpful. C

CONSTRUCTION - The Crane is offering discounted rates due to the ongoing construction. They are constructing additional resident buildings and also a "town center" which will feature a spa, restaurant, reception house, etc. The construction was completely a non-issue for us and it was not heard in our room, at the pools or at the beach. A

CONCLUSION - Overall, a fantastic stay, especially considering the great package the Crane offered. YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO BRING YOUR CAMERA! As said by other reviewers, there are so many beautiful views and colors to take in. I would go back in a minute. Just keep in mind that the resort is on the secluded southeast coast of the island (only a 15 minute taxi ride from the Airport though) and that it is very low key. Tip: Visit thecrane.com and barbados.org for helpful information. A-

How lucky i would be for choosing the Crane Resort as my vacation spot. The resort was beautiful... the beach was amazing. The hotel itself is under construction, but did not affect our stay. We had the most awesome room.... with a veranda and private plunge pool. Our view was the ocean.... and a few palms...... swaying in the wind. The rooms were more than plush. We didn't want to leave...... it was so great, i even proposed on the cliffs of the resort. We will be back.... and many more times at that.

My family and I traveled to The Crane April 8-13th - it was absolutely fabulous. There were 4 adults and three children (two three year olds and one 8yo). We had a first floor two bedroom suite which was in Building 3 (untis A and B that were very closely connected - not really private if you don't know who is in the other room). But for us it was wonderful! Construction did not bother us although we saw it as we entered and departed the resort. The resort really overshadowed the "bad stuff."

In general the service was good - but communication among the staff could have been better. For example, we asked for help with internet connection in our room one evening - the IT guy had already left, we were told he would come the next day - the next day the message was not delivered - and the problem never did get fixed - wireless works in the lobby and by the pool, so we weren't that bothered by it - also there are two PCs in the lobby you can use for free - full internet capabilities and fast.

We brought alot of dry goods with us (packed in suitcases), went shopping for perishables spent $120 US for milk, cheese, beverages, some frozen foods, etc - expect to pay about 33%-50% higher than you would in the US - however this fed us for the entire week - 7 people! My sister and her husband ate at L'Azure on night - their dinner was $80US. Other than that - we ordered pizza from a quick mart (Cutters) just down the street (walking distance) that cost $15US - also has some grocery items. If you want to save $on food you can definately get by with the kitchen, it just takes some planning for meals before you leave.

Please take a look at the pictures for awesome views!

The room was GRAND! We were very pleasantly surprised by the accomodations. Have never stayed in a nicer place. Furniture was not cheap at all - everything seemed top notch. We especially loved the jacuzzi tub and multiple shower heads in the master bath! The private pool was phenomenal! The kids had a blast and it was big enough for everyone - deepest part is 4 feet. Nice patio with table and chairs for 6 plus two very nice lounge chairs.

Can't say enough about the beach - it is the best i have ever seen for bogie boarding - too rough for snorkeling so forget that. Never crowded or uncomfortable - even with the kids the stairs weren't a problem - it was very well maintained and clean. No seaweed or shells! Pink sand - especially noticable at dusk.

Will definately go back when my timeshare allows.

Did have a bunch of mosquito bites the first night we were there - used repellant after that and not as much of a problem.

Went to Bridgetown and the grocery store on the free shuttle - it was great! Saved us about $60US each time.

Watch out for the airport and luggage delay - my sister who was 5mos pregnant had a 2 day luggage delay - there are very limited flights to Barbados and if your luggage doesn't make your connection, then expect it will be a while - we arrived on Sunday, she didn't get her stuff (all 3 suitcases for 3 people) until midnight on Tuesday night more than 48 hours later - that was a real drag. Also, there are no retail stores open on Sunday AND the next day (Monday) was a bank holiday. She made due with some borrowing but wasn't happy about it. The airport and Delta could have handled that much better. They didn't even give her any compensation! When her stuff arrived customs at the airport called to say that camoflauge is illegal and they would be holding those items at the airport - who knew? Next time, we take the necessities as a carry on - esp a swim suit!

Spent a night at The Crane - very nice place. It reminds me of the mega-resorts in Mexico between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Awsome pools, and all the rooms on the first floor have small private pools. The staff is nice and friendly. I think I just happened to have a bad experience. The room I stayed in was on the 1st floor, and it was a "B" unit that is attached to the nice '"pool" units and can be opened up and used as a 2 bedroom. The door that connects the 2 offers little in the way of privacy. The family that was staying in the nice unit had little kids, and it sounded like they were in our room. The next morning when they decided to cook breakfast in their kitchen, I had to put a towel under the crack of the door to try and keep the bacon smoke out. It still sounded like they were in the same room as us. Next time, I will ask for a single room upstairs. We also happened to be there on Easter morning. Apparently Sundays are buffett days, and they had a Gospel Buffet that sounded nice (we abstained), and a lunch buffet. There were no other food options besided buffets.
The hotel is located on a cliff, and there are no fences or any other safety measures to prevent anyone from walking off it. It is a long way down. If you have children, you may want to consider this.

Breath-taking views from this cliff side Resort were just a few of the hightlights of our trip to The Crane. The crystal clear waters rush up along the beach, crashing waves allow hours of fun and powder pink sand really does exist! Pools upon pools to choose from with a picture perfect view of the ocean.

The one bedroom suite was equiped with a full tub with jets to relax in, a grand king-size 4 poster bed and a view of the ocean (and the construction site!)... The Crane does not keep secret the fact that it is undergoing considerable construction - if you have an issue with noise during the day (from your room only) you will not like your stay - but if you frolic on the beach or in the pool you won't even know it is happening.

The staff is extremely friendly - the ZEN restaurant is one of the best on the island but the beach is what made this trip for us - even the locals call it the best beach on the entire island!!
