The main selling point of the Crane must be the excellent beach and wonderful ocean views. The sand is fine and soft and the sea, though it does crash in much more than on the west of the island, is not too rough. The beach is not too crowded and feels much more private than elsewhere on the island.

We stayed in a top floor 2-bed apartment (marvellous 20ft high ceilings and great views). The rooms were huge and generally of a high quality. Not all of the finishes and fittings were quite what might be expected of a top class hotel but the accommodation was generally of a very high quality. The aircon worked (though it wasn't the most efficient, but no problems), the water was fine (I think, though didn't check, that the hot water is probably heated through solar energy on the roof of each block - that would be sensible and would fit with the fact that the hot water was generally a few degrees warmer later in the day). All the staff seemed friendly and service in the restaurant was good.

The building work did not present a problem (though the hotel will certainly be much nicer when its completed) and the current discount on prices seems very fair.

If you want 5 star quality service then Sandy Lane or Villa Nova are perhaps better places to stay in Barbados. The Crane offers good standards of service and accommodation in an outstanding location.

My wife and I stayed at the Crane for 4 days/4 nights in the middle of the July heat, but never experienced any of the problems described elsewhere on this board. However, we did notice more than one guest with a less-than-complimentary attitude toward the staff, and those people are going to have (or create) problems no matter where they stay.

AS FOR THE REST OF US, this was the perfect place to unwind. The pool (and its view) are amazing, as are the beach down below. The sand and the Atlantic surf crashing down on you are worth the trip alone.

Our room was more than adequate, with a large king-sized 4 post bed, hardwood floors, both A/C and ceiling fan, and the 2 person jacuzzi. Not to the mention the nice balcony where we watched nightly tropical rainshowers.

Both restaurants are recommended. We enjoyed breakfast at L'Azure 2 or 3 times, lunch and dinner there once, and dinner at Zen once. Zen's bricks&mortar aren't finished yet, but it's about the food.

Finally, the staff was excellent from the beach to the restaurants to the pool to the lobby to our room. I really can't imagine the problems complained of by others.

Were the restaurants a bit pricey? Yes, but, newsflash: don't go to Barbados if you're trying to eat on the cheap.

A final word, for those of us who grew up driving on the right hand side of the road: I might not attempt renting or hiring a car, for the obvious reasons. However, good taxi service is available on Barbados at any time and any place. The drivers will give you their own personal business cards, and pretty much dedicate themselves to becoming your personal chaffeurs while there. Take about $50-$75 US per cabs per day.

We had a superb suite (large rooms, decent furnishings), very nice grounds, and the beach is fantastic, as most others affirm. The relative isolation of the location was a plus for us; we rented a car and drove all over the island.

The construction was only a very minor nuisance (not much noise at all); certainly worth putting up with for the 35% discount.

We had problems with appliances: The dishwasher and washing machine didn't work; the dryer caused grease stains to appear on our clothes (luckily our better items weren't in there). The management made up for this by moving us to a better room, one with a pool. They also replaced a badly stained T-shirt with a Crane T-shirt.

The staff was very nice to our 3-year-old daughter (not that she caused any trouble or was otherwise very demanding).

We did encounter some of the very minor problems that others mentioned, e.g. often needing to make requests for soap, towels, etc. The air conditioning worked, but not very effectively. But the ceiling fans were sufficient.

No comment on the restaurants, as we never ate there.

Their have been many mixed reviews on the Crane. It depends on what the traveler is looking for and the rooms they were placed in. Our experience was as follows:
1. We were placed in a room that was gorgeous, it had a huge living room and unbelievable bathroom. If you never looked out your window, you would have an amazing experience.
2. Their beach is beautiful and fairly secluded.
1. We were told we had air conditioning but it never worked. We talked to at least 5 other couples who had the same experience.
2. We requested fans since our air didn't work. The first day we requested a fan 3 different times and never received one. I had to go to the front lobby the second day and become very insistent.
3. The construction which we were told would be "unobtrusive" was very obtrusive. There was an excavator with half a dozen workers right outside our balcony. Our balcony and plunge pool were useless unless you don't mind a big , loud foul smelling machine right in front of you.
4. The showers had no hot water, most other couples reported the same.
5. The biggest problem we saw is the management just didn't seem to care about the ongoing problems. The attitude was, "oh, well" or outright annoyance. We never had nay of these issues resolved and the manager never responded to our complaints or would meet with us.

My girlfriend and I just returned home from a great week at The Crane in Barbados. Yes the hotel is in a remote location, but if you want peace, quite and a friendly staff, you can't go work here.
Upon arrival we checked right in to a one bedroom room/apartment, no hassle what-so-ever. We were the lucky ones without A/C. At first I thought that was going to be a huge problem, but after turning on the ceiling fan and getting 2 fans from maintenance, everything work out fine. It got fairly cold at nights. We had the top floor corner room with 12-15 foot vaulted ceiling, absolutely beautiful. Huge bathroom with walk in shower (big enough for 2, if you like that type of stuff) and a nice size jacuzzi tub. With the tub being big, it took a while to fill.... be patient and enjoy. Next the kitchenette, not the biggest, but had everything you could want to cook. New burners, microwave, blender, toaster, coffee maker and all utesils needed for cooking.
Enough with the room, the beach and the courtyeard in the back of the hotel should be enough reason to stay. The courtyard behind the hotel has a beautiful view on top a 40 - 50 ft cliff to the ocean and the beach is awesome. When they say pink sand, they really mean pink.
The restaurants were very good. The Zen was a little pricey for sushi, about double what we were used to paying, $9-$11 for a 6 piece roll.
My advise take advantage of the 35% discount for the contraction that is going on. We didn't notice it one time. Yeah it makes the grounds look a little tore up, but from the contraction I'm used to living in the city, it was minimal.

Our week at The Crane included very helpful, friendly staff, excellent room with plunge pool, beautiful grounds, amazing beach and more. The concierge offers options, the resort offers shuttles at designated times to Bridgetown, the supermarket and other locations. The staff was always helpful and smiling. Of course in addition to the resort there are amazing sights to be explored on the island and at sea.

I recommend The Crane for a restful vacation or an exciting vacation....your choice.

The Crane is in a remote location. I mean away from everything. You would either have to take a bus ride that cost $.75 or you will need to take a taxi which is $20.00 to town. The hotel has a beautiful beach, ok pool and pleasing to the eye rooms. The issues; Not enough bath or hand towels (they seem to run out frequently, problem with small ants, window shutters do not operate properly in some rooms, air condition problems in many of the rooms when you are told the air conditioner works (mind you there are some rooms that do not have air at all), be smart and walk the stairs, while I was there someone was stuck in the very small elevator for over 2 hours. I would consider this hotel/timeshare a beautiful place but I would not stay there again if I had the chance not to. Overall things were tolerable. Need more information write and I will respond.
