“A Week of Luxury and Relaxation”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

This was our fourth visit to to Barbados, but our first at The Crane. We stayed in late April in a one bedroom suite with plunge pool in building 8 overlooking the amazing Crane beach. The view from the fourth floor was spectacular and we regularly sat on our huge balcony watching the sunrise over the beach - something we will never forget and can't wait to see again.

From our arrival and our first taste of their legendary rum punch, to the day we left, the service was friendly and efficient. Everyone we met at The Crane was genuinely happy to help and went out of their way to make our stay special. This personal touch is something that is rare in both The UK and The USA, but is something we have often experienced from the relaxed and friendly people of Barbados.

Crane Beach has been named by many as one of the best in the world and it is certainly spectacular. The sand is powder soft with a pink tinge and the sea is turquoise. The sea is not flat calm like on the Caribbean side of the island, but the waves make it interesting and are excellent for playing and body boarding. The Crane has its own loungers on the beach which their friendly staff will set-up for you. There is also a flag by every chair which you just have to raise to ask for drinks or food to be delivered to you whilst you relax by the sea. How great is that?

Whilst at The Crane, we ate at all the restaurants and found them to be very good and reasonably priced. We especially enjoyed dinner at L'Azure which was as good as most UK fine dining restaurants and equal to those on the West Coast. We also went to the Sunday Gospel Breakfast at L'Azure. The food selection was delicious and the singers and band very entertaining. We had dinner and takeaway pizza from the Italian restaurant D'Onofrio's. Everything was tasty and surprisingly authentic. Lunch at The Carriage House Restaurant looking across the pools and gardens to the sea was relaxed with good food and cocktails and was an excellent place to cool off after a morning by the pool or beach. Just beware of the delicious rum punch. They make them strong at The Crane!

This was our first stay ay The Crane, but certainly won't be our last. The suites are huge and beautifully furnished, the gardens and pools are spectacular and never crowded, the restaurants and facilities at The Crane Village are top notch and best of all the service from the wonderful staff is always friendly and beyond what we have experienced anywhere else on our travels.

We returned home relaxed and pampered and are looking forward to going back to The Crane as soon as we possibly can.

Room Tip: Choose a high floor Ocean View Room for cooling breezes and the most amazing views of turquoise seas...

It was our fourth stay at the Crane and we just love it more each year. We own 2 weeks in a deluxe 2 bedroom - Historic Hotel section (Marine Villa). Although the newer buildings are preferred by many owners and hotel guests (AC, washer dryers, more sq ft, private pool option, dishwasher, more bathrooms) we love the character and charm of the Marine Villa. The breezes and terrace views are amazing - no AC needed and items that we noted for repair in previous years were attended to in our absence. The original Hotel pool (adults only now) adjacent to this building and the Spa, is fantastic for serious swimming and the views from the lookout area there are like a "magnet", drawing guests several times a day to gaze at beautiful Crane Beach below. The beach itself is spectacular when viewed from above, or from the comfort of loungers under the shade of umbrellas, set up each day by friendly and efficient Crane staff. One really feels spoiled here.

The terrace pools are great too - some especially shallow for children with lots of loungers and shade - grouped together in interesting ways. Since purchases can be charged to the room and rooms have key cards - it's relaxing not to be burdened with regular keys, wallets etc. Excellent WIFI in rooms and some common areas and free calls to landlines in North America and UK. Although we took books down to the beach - we often ended up just watching the beach "show", little ones having a wonderful time digging in the sand, playing with their parents, chasing waves at the water's edge, the boogie boarders challenging the surf, cliff jumping (at your own risk!) and the mesmerizing waves rolling in and changing with the tides. The "white noise" of the ocean makes it very relaxing at the beach. We enjoyed walking the beach at sundown - when a pink glow settled over everything and the pink colour of the sand became even more intense. On one occasion, making our final walk of the day along the beach, (gate at top is locked at dusk for security) we noticed one of the Security Staff watching us from above and later thanked him for keeping the gate open a little longer so we wouldn't have to take the long way around by road. He smiled and said he would never leave a guest behind on the beach. This was a typical interaction with caring staff we met at the Crane. It is true that the elevator to the beach was occasionally not working - for us no big deal since the staircase up has beautiful views from each level and is great exercise. However, for small kids and the mobility challenged, the elevator really needs to become more reliable. Deana, Sheila, and Elizabeth of Housekeeping were professional and friendly and really pampered us. When my daughter and son in law joined us in the lockout portion of our unit for a few days, the charming Cheryl in Reception managed our request with efficiency and a smile. We requested mosquito netting (just in case for my very allergic daughter) and a replacement TV remote. Maintenance was at our door within minutes - well done - since I know it was busy over the Easter weekend. Sammy always has lots to share about the beautiful landscaping - it is a huge job for the landscaping team to maintain under the extreme conditions of heat, sun, salt and winds. Take time to stroll the paths over the extensive grounds (especially one to the tennis courts) and notice the many different plants, small details and fabulous Koi ponds. If you are lucky, you will see some monkeys - don't get too close to them though! On a number of occasions at the Carriage House we enjoyed the grilled fish with salad and baked potato - delicious and fair price - thanks Susan! We love eating outdoors in an informal setting - wish it was open for dinner too. And of course, what tastes better after a long flight than the Welcome Rum Punch :-) Since we often cooked in, using the well equipped kitchen, we appreciated the General Store, although some fellow guests gave us a lift in their rental car to nearby Emerald City Supermarket for better selection and to buy meat and chicken. Glad to see more fruit and veg and salad ingredients in General Store this year - hope they keep working on this.

A few nights of low key live entertainment at Bar 1887 would entice more guests to patronize this lovely spot - in other years we enjoyed it. Night lighting of pathways has improved but still needs regular checking for dark areas and burnt out bulbs for safety on the steps. Small things though.....Can't wait to come back again next year! The "living is easy" at the Crane - wish we were there right now :-) Beautiful, peaceful - like living in a "cocoon" for awhile, away from the cares and hustle and bustle of life.

Room Tip: Go for an ocean view room ! If budget is a serious concern try a garden suite or park unit which are...

Dear LovetoSwimBeth,

Your review has aptly captured the very essence of The Crane and there is hardly anything left for me to add! The Marine Villa certainly is a charming relic, enjoying the resort’s most exceptional views. Now, with the addition of the Residences by the Sea and Residences in the Park, we have blended that old world charm with today’s conveniences.

It was an absolute pleasure to welcome you back for the 4th time and I know I speak on behalf of each team member mentioned when I say, we all look forward to your 5th visit!

Kind regards,

We stayed at the Crane for part of our honeymoon in Barbados and it was absolutely beautiful! The property is lovely, with old barbadian architecture and style but newer finishings and conveniences. The resort has 4 restaurants and a little store so you really don't even need to leave if you don't want to. The resort is a little isolated on the east coast so there is not a lot around there anyway. The food is pretty good all around - our favorite was Zen. There are lots of pools, including an adults-only one, which is nice if you're not there with little kids. The beach is amazing, although maybe a little rough for swimming. At both pools and beach we could always find empty loungers, no matter what time of day. We stayed in a one-bedroom sea view suite with a plunge pool in building 5. The view was awesome, and the suite had everything we needed. The only drawbacks I would say are that the bed is not the most comfortable, and the plunge pool was a little too cold to swim in most of the time. We also got massages at the spa which were wonderful, and had the concierge set up a couple of tours for us - they were lovely and very helpful as well. Overall wonderful stay!

Wow. An idyllic and glorious time. The photos don't do it justice, because though you can see that it's a beautifully designed complex, what you can't see is how cleverly it integrates its old 19th-century grace with modern aesthetics and convenience. You stumble upon nooks and crannies and all sorts of mini-places that make you sigh at their beauty. The beach is as lovely as it's cracked up to be -- though the surf is truly a bit rough -- and the Crane has everything from casual to fancy restaurants and tip-top service in every way. My favorite moment: We asked for a tour of the landscaping because I was so curious about the amazing tropical blooms we saw all around us, and -- in typical Crane style -- it turned into a fabulous grand tour by Edwin, the landscaping chief, that lasted more than an hour (and taught me dozens of new types of plants.) The condo we had was just a few yards from the sea, and we never tired of the non-stop breezes and endlessly waving palms. The condo's design was brilliant -- we were a family of four and never felt crowded because everything so opened onto the sea, and the kitchen was well-equipped enough for cooking a few real meals and every breakfast. The furnishings were stately and impressive, the Wifi worked fine, and the housekeeping service was magical. Clearly, the Crane is the kind of place that people keep coming back to, and it's easy to see why...Just because everyone has to quibble about something: The fitness center is certainly adequate -- especially the powerful AC -- but doesn't measure up to the high standard of the rest of the resort. But knowing the Crane, they probably have plans to upgrade it...

Room Tip: Seems worth the extra money to be on the ocean instead of in the "park" area.

Dear Carey G,

We could not agree with you more – photos definitely do The Crane no justice! It is an experience that simply must be enjoyed in person and spread over 40 cliff-top acres, there is an abundance of nooks and crannies to be discovered.

Landscaping Manager, Edwin Franklyn, was thrilled by your special mention. It was his pleasure to show you all that we do here to enhance the beauty of the resort and you will certainly be pleased to note that we have also taken your comments under review regarding the Fitness Centre.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with the world. We hope to welcome you back very soon.

We had a lovely 10 days at the hotel. The staff were lovely and the setting (especially the beach) was great. We had a garden room, in retrospect a sea view would of been better. But it was well equipped, spacious and I would love to go again.

We have seen some complaints on this site on the standards and service, it's not US service, it's Bajan style with a sincere smile. Overall for a vacation it's great!

Room Tip: If you can a sea view would be lovely

We spent a week at The Crane with both family and friends. With a few negative reviews, mixed in with the mostly 4-5 star, we went hoping that these were just a handful of people impossible to please. This was definitely the case. The rooms, grounds, pools, beach, food, and staff were all excellent.

We had a first floor oceanfront 1br with 28ft. pool. More then enough room for 2 adults and 2 children. The pool was a perfect temperature to take a morning swim or quick dip before dinner. All pools are heated by the sun and the shaded upper floor plunge pools some in our group had were too cold to enjoy. We ate out every meal but with a full kitchen and dining room table for 6 you could certainly stay in for some meals. The only minor negative was the A/C. All 4 of our rooms never got as cold as we would have liked it. The system only works with an on/off switch (no temp. setting). We had maintenance come a number of times only to say all was working fine. With 80-82F. weather this was not a major problem (just not the meat locker we like). If I had to guess, the rooms were probably 75F.

We ate multiple times at all restaurants. The breakfast alternated from buffet to a la cart. Both were good but too similar in offering so the buffet was a quicker start to our day. Lunch either at the beach, the Carriage House, or L'Azure were all good with the staff remembering us each day. L'Azure was the best of the 3 but all are worth trying. Dinner at Zen was our favorite. If you are with a group reserve the private room. D'Onofrio's italian and L'Azure international were close seconds. Please remember your in the islands and service will not be as quick as most are used to. Sit back, relax, and enjoy. You shouldn't be in a rush on vacation. The main bar, 1887, was a great gathering spot before and after dinner but don't expect late night activity. Closing time ranged from 10-12pm. If there is no music, or you do not like what is playing, just ask to plug in your own phone or ipad. The bartenders were very accommodating.

Drink service at the beach and pools was quick. We did tip at the start and end of each day which was greatly appreciated by the staff. A nice plus (tipping?) was each morning we would venture down to the beach and the staff would have our chairs laid out waiting for us.

A few warnings, there is always a breeze but even with a little cloud cover the sun will surprise even the darkest of complexion. Bug bites also will sneak up on you so bring some spray or wipes. We also saw a few people who ran into some jellyfish tentacles. It appeared to be loose tentacles that may have been floating in the water. We never saw any jellyfish and they were small stings but brought about a pretty good reaction where they came in contact with you.

All in all one of our best vacations (we visit the Caribbean 2-3 times a year). If you go be sure to say hi to Happy at the beach, Damian at the pool, and Susan in the restaurants. They will give you great service and greet you each day with a smile.

Room Tip: Plunge pools are too cold to enjoy. If you do not have the 28ft infinity pool, skip it and save some...

Lovely casual location, fresh grilled fish, rum punch and a smiling face just steps from one of the best beaches on the island. It hardly gets any better!
