“Stunning beach and beautiful room ruined by poor management”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2014

This could be a first class resort based on the absolutely beautiful beach and the gorgeous room that we had but sadly our holiday was very negatively impacted by the unbelievably poor management at this hotel. When we arrived at about 4:30 p.m. we were told our room was not ready. No reason given and no estimate as to when it would be ready. At about 6 my travel agent made a call and we were miraculously able to go to our room. Still don't know why there was a delay. We had a room with our own 28' pool with a view out to the ocean which was truly beautiful. The indoor spaces were also quite nice and there was lots of space. When we went to dinner the restaurant was closed for some undisclosed reason and they were re-routing everyone to L'Azure which was only so-so and overpriced. The next day I placed a room service breakfast order that never arrived. When I called to check on it they said the guy forgot to give them the order but they would start it now. We went to the beach and were told there were no towels left. When we asked how long until they would be available we were told they didn't know. At 5:00 p.m. that day our room had still not received housekeeping and that was after I had called at 3:30 and again at 4:00. And that was just Day One! Very often no beach chairs, no umbrellas, and some days they didn't even have fresh bath towels to shower with before dinner! These types of inconveniences came up at many times during our stay and made us feel that we were not staying at a first class hotel. We would have moved hotels if anything else had been available. The property is quite run down overall and the gym is absolutely terrible (ancient equipment and dirty). It really is unfortunate because this could be a truly beautiful place to stay. On the positive side, the staff were always very friendly and tried to be helpful but just did not have the resources to provide proper service.

Room Tip: The best ocean views would be the rooms looking over the pool to the ocean. Our room was to the sid...

Dear Wilson S,

The Crane certainly does enjoy a spectacular location here on the pristine South East coast of Barbados and we strive to ensure that our guests’ experiences are every bit as spectacular.

Unfortunately, your stay coincided with an unexpected equipment failure in D’Onofrio’s which rendered it impossible for our culinary team to function efficiently. Each guest scheduled to dine in D’Onofrio’s on that particular evening was to be contacted, informed of the situation and invited to dine with us in L’Azure. We do apologise if this was not communicated to you.

However, you will be pleased to note that we have since addressed the areas that detracted from your overall enjoyment of The Crane. We certainly hope to have another opportunity to welcome you back to experience these improvements and more.

Kind regards,

Korey Boyce

We booked a trip to the Crane December 27-January 3. We booked and paid for a 2 bedroom suite with a 28ft pool, and used Travelocity (for the first and LAST time) to book our trip. (DONT EVER USE THEM!!!) When we arrived at the hotel, reception was luke-warm at best, but the rum punch was good and we were excited to be away with our boys.

We were taken to our room in building 2 and started settling in. I started noticing that the room we were in was NOT the room we booked, so I called the front desk. They informed me that the room we booked was not available, so they put us in an inferior room. When I read them the description of the room on our receipt, I was told that that room type was not available but they could get us moved on Jan 1st when a room would be available. I explained that this was unacceptable as we had already paid for the higher level room. I asked if they would at least credit us for the difference, and Karen in reservations said we wouldn't receive a refund for the difference, and that it was Travelocity's fault, not theirs.

We requested a manager and spoke with Mel, who listened to our issues and promised to remedy them in the morning. We then returned to our room to put our boys to bed. When we opened the pull out couch, a large cockroach ran up and greeted us! At this point we were done!

The next morning, we were visited by Dennis who was VERY helpful and got us moved in to the correct room in building 3. He also credited us the difference for the lower level room, and set up portable air conditioners in the bedrooms. We unpacked and headed to the beach, which was the location of our next nightmare. It wasn't the lack of chairs or towels (we're talking ZERO) that was the problem, it was something much worse. After finally coaxing our 9 year old in to the rough waters of the ocean, he began screaming. As I approached him, I could see something on his leg. I took him out of the water and rushed him to the 'lifeguards'. Turns out he had been stung by a man-of-war jelly fish! The "lifeguard' poured vinegar on his stings and told us it would be better in a few minutes. It was, but we spent the rest of our time in Barbados at the pools. Over the next few days, we heard the unmistakeable scream of child after child from the beach. It was very upsetting that NOONE warned us of the jellyfish, nor did they seem too excited when child after child was stung. We saw three children get stung in one hour!!!!!

At this point, we were still trying to salvage our trip. We did have a wonderful few days after coming to terms with a few things. There were no towels....ever. We ended up taking towels from our room and drying them each day in the dryer. We made due with one chair for five people. We got used to passing employees who didn't even say "Hello". We learned that lunch required waiting for a table for almost 20 minutes each day. And we got creative with our omelets since the breakfast buffet was the same EVERY SINGLE DAY. All of these things were annoying, but we were determined to have a good vacation, so we did! (Until we tried to get home, but that's another story....quick version- a flight to Manchester, England in order to get home to NY in two days instead of ten, and a BAD flare up of the jellyfish sting.)

The Crane is BEAUTIFUL, but needs something. If a good resort group came in and made some modifications, it could be great. They need more.....more employees, more towels, more chairs, more hospitality. They are also leaving a lot of money on the table. For example, there is no chair service at the beach or the pools. They would benefit greatly from some basic resort staples, and could turn a good resort into a great one.

Some tips-
-Apparently Dec and Jan are the height of jellyfish season on the SE part of Barbados- BEWARE!!
-Fusion was a GREAT off site restaurant!
-Get a private driver, don't use the shuttle service. You'll pay half as much with a driver.
-Cool Runnings catamaran was AWESOME!!!!

Dear jules11575,

We were disappointed to learn that your stay failed to meet expectations. The experiences of our guests are of paramount importance and we have since addressed many of the areas you highlighted for improvement.

Unfortunately, following periods of high winds, these Portuguese Man O’ Wars (commonly mistaken for jelly fish) are washed ashore. While our Beach Attendants are extremely vigilant and equipped with the appropriate course of treatment, we certainly will step up our communication efforts to warn guests of potential harm in these instances. You will also be pleased to note that we have recently reviewed our breakfast offering and will be rolling out a new menu shortly.

While we are pleased you managed to still enjoy your stay with us, we hope to welcome you again soon to enjoy the true Crane experience.

Kind regards,

Korey Boyce,

When we arrived to the Hotel....our hearts sank...the Reception area was poorly taken care of...dead plants...mismatched furniture and magazines haphazardly tossed around. Staff not as sharp as one would expect from this Hotel. Not a great first impression . Our room wasn't ready so we made our way to L azure....same theme...poorly taken care....rust on all the railings....ceiling fans were rusty....and the decor was plainly "cheap" for this level of a Hotel. The pool area near the restaurant was also poorly taken care....they should have nicer furniture. The Spa...same theme....cheap and not taken care of. Knowing this was a Holiday season you would think time and care would be taken with the common areas...we quickly went to Trip Advisor to try and find a different place. Our room was ready and we were literally frightened to see what was to come. We had a one bedroom suite with an ocean view....drum roll please......GORGEOUS!!!! The room was spacious, clean, updated. Room 214A was perfect. We put away Trip Advisor and set about enjoying our vacation. The view is the best I've seen....the most beautiful beach in such a natural setting. The other pool area was beautiful. The Crane needs to work on the look and service of L'Azure. The service there is horrible and the look matches. New Year dinner was so disorganized....we stood in line to get in and then had to stand in another line for drink tickets!!! So many people were outraged. The carriage house is GREAT...and the service is as we'll! The Italian restaurant is good and service is as we'll. Zen is a must!!! And first class service. The end end of this hotel is that there is such potential but management doesn't pay attention to detail. Most of these fixes are cosmetic. The Reception is your first point of entry....make it first class...breakfast is at L'Azure every morning....add flowers and a few nice touches...and hire a staff that is happy to be there and organized and fix the pool area...people walk by that numerous times a day....the spa needs to be more tranquil ....and the cheap "pull up" doesn't make it that way...candles...soft music... Make better use of the large space..... The Crane has potential but management needs to commit to making it better.

We stayed at The Crane before and after a cruise. Next time, we'll stay put for longer and may splurge on a better room. We stayed in the least expensive class of rooms, in the historic inn. (Room 17 does not even have a chair.) The room is what prompts a 4-star instead of 5-star rating. The beach is beyond beautiful, with pinky-beige sand and waves crashing into a coral cliff. The resort is convenient to the airport yet feels remote, away from the hubbub of the city and surrounded by its own little village with good restaurants and a cool bar. The evening sky gave us a dazzling display of stars.

Dear RIBev2,

Thank you for taking the time to share your fantastic Crane experience with us. Crane Beach definitely is in a class of its own with its powder soft pink sand and azure water.

The Historic Hotel was actually built in the 1790s and while these rooms may not feature every modern amenity, they boast a certain unique charm and command the most breathtaking views on property!

It was a pleasure to welcome you and we look forward to welcoming you back for a longer stay next time!

We stayed for one day - family of six with two little children. We ate at Carriage Restaurant - good & reasonably priced food.

We had a great time on the beautiful beach.

Mel - who helped us with everything - was brilliant!

We are staying at the Crane this week for our first experience in the Barbados. The resort is a wonderful experience on being left alone to one self if desired. No pool games. No screaming and yelling. No whisking you off here and there. You can have the day trips if you want or sleep on a recliner at the pool or beach. You can read a book undisturbed as there are many places to lounge. The choice is yours! An awesome place to unwind. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I left my charger at home and a staff member at the front desk lent me hers. the resort is only a short 10minute drive from the airport. The beach is short but as nice as it gets. The week has been upbeat and positive from the time we arrived. highly recommended. We will be back!

We can't stay away from the Crane for long. For the first time, we stayed in Building 5 (Cliff Cot), which we highly recommend as it fronts the ocean with a 180 degree view of its sparkling, blue waters, including the dramatic cliffs that descend into the exploding waves.

The staff was excellent and much more attentive than the other island resort that we visited during this trip. We have been coming to the Crane for several years and have observed a definite improvement among the morale and attitude of the staff. Clearly, Barbadians who work in the tourist industry understand the importance of visitors to the overall economy of the country, and it shows by their friendliness and helpfulness to guests at the Crane. A simple greeting of "good morning" or "good afternoon" goes a long way on this island, which is something that many Americans may not completely understand. Where we live in NJ, who ever makes the effort to greet strangers? It would be viewed with great suspicion.

Although some may find the Crane a bit remote from the hustle and bustle of urban life, we never felt the need to leave during our 8-day stay. This is a place to relax and to leave all urban cares and woes behind. Just sit back and let the magic of the place do all the work for you.

For dining, we recommend the Carriage House for lunch with its spectacular views and laid back, unpressured atmosphere and Donofrio's, which serves up delicious Italian dishes with a staff that genuinely wants to please its customers. For Asian food, there is Zen, and the view from L'Azure, the original restaurant, is still as spectacular as ever. There is a new beach restaurant and bar, but it is unfortunately only open from 12 to 4. We would have liked longer hours down there.

Now we are back in the freezing cold of NJ and very much missing the warm, smiling faces of the Crane and its special beauty. Once again, the unique, spectacular location of the Crane and its accommodating staff will leave a lasting impression on us until we return again.

Room Tip: Building 5 oceanfront or the historic building (Building 1) units have excellent cross ventilation a...
