“A wonderfully comfortable hideaway in mid-Wales”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2012

My wife and I have just enjoyed a lovely weekend at Highgate. The house is a really beautiful 17th-century building, set in spacious grounds, with wonderful views over the countryside. The welcome was as warm as the fires burning in the stoves in the lounge and dining room. Our bedroom was big and really comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. There are presumably plenty of walks to be enjoyed nearby -- we should have brought some maps! -- but we drove a little further afield, visiting the lovely town of Llanidloes and even the seaside at Aberdovey. We also enjoyed a very good dinner at the Lion in Berriew. All in all, highly recommended!

Our stay was a Christmas gift to my wife. We chose Highgate House solely based on the reviews on tripadvisor and we were no disappointed. The photographs on Highgate's website do not do justice to the building. It is truly magnificent in every aspect. It stands overlooking magnificent countryside. We stayed in the house which is extremely furnished and decorated in keeping with this 17th Century Jacobean property. We were greeted warmly by a really friendly man . . . . . who's name escapes (Sorry!!) and shown to our room. Our room was beautifully decorated. The bed was HUGE!!! Like sleeping on a football field!! And oh sooooo comfy!! The shower was quite powerful. We were shown the communal lounge area where you can relax in front of a magnificent fire. Meal times were explained. Breakfast was served in a superb dining room. The breakfast was very fulfilling setting us for the day ahead. In the evenings, we ate in nearby pubs - The Bull and Heifer in Bettws Cedewain and The Lion in Berriew. To be recommended. We will certainly return to Highgate for another break. Try it yourself . . . . you won't be disappointed!!

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the house have an outstanding view across the valley.

We spent an excellent weekend at Highgate. It is superb in every respect. We had looked at the reviews on this website before we booked, and agree with all the praise it is given. Our ensuite room was very large and comfortable, and very tastefully furnished in keeping with the age of the house. We visited on a very cold and snowy weekend, and we were very warm and cosy throughout our stay. There was also a very comfortable lounge for guests with a large wood burner where you can sit and read in the evening. The owners were very friendly and helpful, giving us help on where to eat locally etc and their recommendations were not disappointing. The breakfast was superb, and was so large that we didn't have to eat until the evening. There was an excellent range of cereals, fruit and cooked items and Sarah catered willingly for a gluten free diet. The area around Newtown has a lot to offer- we visited Portmerion and the coast, which was within easy reach. However, a weekend is not enough to experience all that the area has to offer, and so we will definitely return, either to the farmhouse itself, or to one of the cottages that the owners also have on site.

We were given gift vouchers for a weekend stay (wedding anniversary and 50th birthday!) and chose Highgate as it stood head & shoulders above the rest. It was a brilliant choice and we were certainly not disappointed in any way. The house has so much character and history, and our room was warm and cosy like the rest of the house, which had large log burners in the lounge and dining room. Breakfast was excellent, just the right amount and cooked to perfection. Sarah and Chris were great hosts, and were surprised to find a special basket of treats that our daughter had arranged with Sarah. We were so pleased with our stay that we are already thinking of going back in the spring, and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone that enjoys peace and quiet in a rural setting.

Room Tip: The B&B rooms are in the old house and have more character, the self-catering accommodation look...

We stayed on the friday night of the Wales Rally and managed to book on the day-very luckily! When we arrived we wernt sure what to expect as hadnt managed to get online to have a look, we were very happy with what we arrived to. It was raining and we were rather muddy as had been in the forest for the day, Highgate was very well sign posted so we found it easily and our hosts were very welcoming. Our room was lovely and big with a fireplace and all of the amenities you would expect (as well as earl grey and fresh milk). It was lovely and warm and exactly what we were hoping for. Breakfast was excellent, served in a beautiful farmhouse style dining room with lovely tableware and excellent service. Overall an excellent stay-we wanted to go back at the end of our saturday rather than go home! Would most certainly recommend to anyone else and would stay again.

Highgate stands proud on a rise among lovely grounds a 17th century black and while farmhouse.

I had booked B&B but as the house was full I had an opportunity to sample 'the annex' which is part of one of the self catering cottages. It is a large double bedroom, with its own door, beautifully furnished and, an extra bonus, a spacious wet room. This would be ideal for a disabled visitor. (A look through the window of the rest of the cottage showed an expansive open plan lounge, dinning room and kitchen all furnished too high standard.)

Breakfast was excellent and all guests are seated round a large farmhouse table which is very convivial. (For a single guest this is a great improvement on the usual lone table.)

The public rooms in the house are cosy and comfortable and the owner is pleasant and helpful.

I will certainly use this B&B again, next time i am in the area.

My colleagues and I stayed here this week for one night. The accommodation was excellent with a superb breakfast the next morning in a the spacious dining room. I would definitely like to stay here again for a longer period of time.
