Owner description: The Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a 13 1/2-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. We are recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest railway company in the world, being founded in 1832. We still build steam locomotives and carriages in our own workshops and the world's oldest steam engine, Prince, is still in regular use today - more than 150 years after it was built. Our historic trains climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round horseshoe bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunnelling through it. The Welsh Highland is Snowdonia's newest railway. Trains start their spectacular 25 mile scenic journey from beneath the historic castle walls at Caernarfon. The trains - hauled by the world's most powerful narrow gauge steam locomotives - climb from sea level to over 650 feet on the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass - voted the most beautiful spot in the UK by the National Trust - and on to Porthmadog.

Book a seat in the pullman carriage, enjoy the views - an average cup of tea and a nice slice of cake.

“150 years of steam”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

Yet again the amazing team on the world famous Ffestiniog railway did not let us down everything was spot on including the weather. This has got to be the best railway in the entire world even go as far as say in the universe. I never get bored of the wonderful scenery as every trip made it changes. This railway is a must for everyone even if you don't like trains (who could not love all the little well kept beautiful engines they have here ). I am returning yet again in December for their magical Santa special and i can put my hand on my heart and say i am more excited to be going than my little 4 year girl who know even name of the engine running on this line. Well done to every one concerned x

“Best Rail Journey”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

These two railways provide the very best scenic journeys in the UK with the addition of hard working steam locomotives. The operation is very efficient and though the gauge of the track is narrow, the carriages are comfortable (and beer is available) en route! Though expensive, a trip on either or both of these railways is not to be missed - it's worth it!

Reviewed November 4, 2013

Another fantastic trip on the Halloween train - full of atmosphere, spooky characters, lovely food and fireworks. Even the engine hauling the train had spooky eyes! Thank you all so much!
See you next year! We also had teenage children with us

“Very expensive trip if out with family”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

The trip on the steam train was decent enough but the price was very expensive when you take into account 3 adults and 2 children.

Children under 16 travel free with each fare paying adult and add nothing to the cost of travel. It would have been helpful if you had given details of which railway you travelled on and what journey you took.

On a per-mile basis, our trains are amongst the cheapest in the UK. Visitors can choose from a variety of journey lengths with return fares starting from as little as £11.10 for a return from Caernarfon to Waunfawr.

It is also worth remembering that our most expensive ticket - a £34 return from Porthmadog to Caernarfon - gives you a 50 mile journey and a whole day out. Again, a child under 16 travels free with each adult. A wide range of discounts - up to 66% - and concessionary fares are also on offer. Check with the booking office or on the website for details.
