As the organiser of Norwegian walking groups in N. Wales in mid May for the last two years, I have used the Royal Sportsman as our base in Porthmadog for the Ffestiniog Railway/Moelwyns and on to Snowdon.
The groups have been very pleased with the accommodation but especially so with the 'family' ambiance of the hotel combined with the excellent food.
The hotel is not particularly cheap but its special attention to detail and determination to offer a spectacular gastronomic experience (my words, not theirs – hard to know how to describe it without sounding pretentious!) make it certainly well above the value of a normal 3-star hotel.
From my point of view, as the organiser, I have been particularly taken with how helpful the management have been in sorting out any sorts of problems – including flexibility with rooming and helping, at great effort, our group members who left a camera on a beach or needed medical assistance.
The hotel is in a good position in a town with relatively little choice of accommodation – a shame as Porthmadog is interesting and has much to offer nearby. It is also a good base for walking the coastal path towards Criccieth or tours inland to the mountains.
