Good check in with helpful staff
Room was a little dated but clean and well stocked with tea coffee and biscuits. Bathroom had lots of extras and bed was very comfortable with lots of fluffy pillows. Having a secure garage was a plus. Restaraut menu looked good but a bit pricey.

Thanks so much for a positive review overall. Our reception staff aim to make check-in as quick but informative as possible - especially for guests who've had a long journey. Our rooms and en-suite bathrooms are regularly updated. A private, secure, and covered off-street car park - with free electric car charging points for forward-thinking guests - is a bonus for many guests, especially classic car and motorcycle owners' groups who stay each year. Our 2 AA Rosette a la carte (restaurant) menu is, in fact, superb and priced very favorably with the nearest such highly-graded restaurant almost 30 miles away! For the very price-conscious, we do have a lower-cost Traditional Classics menu of equally-excellent quality food. We hope this reviewer will return soon to try. . .

Booked 2 winter (off peak) nights via amazon red letter. Really good value.
Having then looked on google earth at location, was not thrilled to see street view pics.
Reality was lots better than the google street view looked.

Old hotel, nicely decorated and felt a high standard. Better than pics or google give the impression of.
Ian on reception very welcoming and helpful. In fact first room had damp (from cleaning) carpets, Ian ran around making sure our room change was painless.
Best bit - food quality in restaurant (2 AA star) was really impressive, high end food, nicely cooked and presented, good value. Waiter also very accomplished. So impressive I bought chef a drink.
Parking - covered garage at side of hotel nice touch.
Public bar staff very friendly and real fire etc..
Porthmadog was tired, struggling high street. But a good gate way to the Snowdonia Park.
10 mins or so into Beddgelert, nice place. 20 mins to the incredible Llanberis pass views.
Nice place, well organised, service focused. A pleasure to stay in.

Room Tip: Wifi on upper floor struggles. Stay on floor 1

Stayed at Royal Sportsman of two nights with dinner and cream tea for £129. Advertised as worth £450. This is not the walk in rate, when I asked reception about it they said the groupon value was taken for the summer rate, given this is a winter deal this did not feel honest. There was added costs for staying on weekends for cooked breakfast which was not mentioned in the groupon fine print. The free wine was just called 'white wine' so was obviously extremely cheap not what you expect when having a nice dinner. I arrived a six and was told I was too late to have cream tea. The room was in a courtyard area was a bit like a pvc conservatory with stud walling, this meant it was very noisy, you could hear everything from the other rooms and so got a very poor nights sleep, with the dogs howling next door it felt like being in kennels! The net curtains were not opaque, so with the main curtain open my could see people in there beds. Having to keep the curtain closed meant that there was no natural light in the room. The bed was also very uncomfortable, I was unable to sleep on my side because it was too hard. The conservatory area was connected to a car park so you got the smell of car fumes at times. The room was overall small, dark and depressing with poor quality fixings. Overall the hotel had tired decor. There is no way I would very pay £200 for this room, summer or winter I would honestly rather sleep in the car. We complained after the first night and got upgraded to a nicer room where we were able to sleep, however the shower was a trickle hardly what you want after a rainy day walking. It felt as if the Royal Sportsman where using groupon as advertising rather then offering a genuine good deal. The upside of the stay was that the staff were nice and the food was also quite nice.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are noisy, small with little privacy.

We know from long experience it's impossible to please everyone all of the time - and this is particularly true over the winter with some 'special deal' voucher guests.
This year is the first time in many we have worked with Groupon - as well as several other regular voucher providers - and, on the whole, those on a £129 dinner, bed and breakfast Groupon offer have so far thoroughly enjoyed the good value.
Let's take this lady's points one at a time:
Our Groupon offer 'fine print' clearly states the price is based on standard rates i.e. summer, and not winter rates which are already discounted by around 20%; and that supplements are payable for weekends and cooked breakfast. This is not dishonest - it's surely a case of reading the details of an offer.
Re the "extremely cheap" white wine, let's just say that their bottle wholesale costs 2-3 times the price of better-known branded wines in supermarkets; and was tested with our dinners before being offered in a 2 AA Rosette restaurant.
Re the cream tea, I have spoken with our receptionist who remembers this lady's face visibly turning sour when told our free afternoon (not cream) tea is served between 3-5pm and not during dinner service at 6pm.
As to the room, many guests love and specifically request the cosy courtyard area and, whatever the winter weather they go out and enjoy the daylight - so how can there be an issue with net curtains, natural light and seeing people in their beds on a dark evening?
We know people find all beds too hard or too soft - it's just a personal preference - and that the quality of fixings was fine for both an AA and Visit Wales inspector. So when this lady complained (not for the first time since her arrival) we gladly moved her to a different, larger room with a new bed and bath/shower - all at no extra cost! And then she complains publicly about the shower - without mentioning it to us first so we could see if there was indeed an issue!
We, like many other accommodation providers, use Groupon (and all the other best-known voucher providers) to advertise ourselves, attract guests to the hotel in a quieter season, and to offer a genuine good deal. Most guests who take up these offers appreciate the spirit and value of them. Some - like this lady, who has also reviewed other 3 and 4-star accommodations negatively when based on price - seem to expect something for nothing and so are constantly disappointed.
We are happy to note she found my staff "nice" and the food "quite nice" - a compliment indeed from this lady!

Stayed in porthmadog for the weekend and booked a table for 2 here for Sunday lunch. Very impressed. Staff very friendly and helpful. Not a vast menu which we prefer as they obviously concentrate more time and effort into less dishes. They had an offer on. 2 courses for £15.95 per person. Some may say it's expensive but the food was fantastic. We both had the sirloin roast beef with all the trimmings. Only 3 puddings to choose from but again couldn't fault the food. Will definitely consider eating here again. Highly recommended.

Stayed here on a groupon deal. Was a little disappointed to have to pay extra for the stay as the deal was bought as a gift, after the initial payment I ended up having to pay £20 upgrade per night as no rooms left for the deal, £10 additional because it was the weekend and £5 pn per dog so additional £70. I did initially think this was a lot to pay however when we got there we could not complain. The room was very large with everything you could need. TV, kettle, tea, hot chocolate, cotton buds and lots of toiletries oh and a patio area although not used with the awful weather. We got there late and the restaurant was near to closing however they set us a table and lit the lovely real fire just for us. The food was amazing. Small portions but packed with flavour. The breakfast was the same, the first morning we had the buffet lots of choices, fruit, yogurts, cereals, fruit juice and more. Followed by amazing home made porridge and toast. The second morning we tried the breakfast (extra again £5.......Very very good! The town itself is not as impressive, run down and quiet don't expect much but don't be put off, we used this as a base for walking snowdon and exploring the local area. Great place to stay with friendly staff.

I would like to thank all the staff for giving my wife and I a lovely stay for her birthday. The service was excellent throughout. We did have problems with the TV signal and was glad of the broadband so I could watch BBC I player and Virgin online. We booked a larger room and it was very good. The food in the restaurant was very good and we tried both menus. I enjoyed both but my wife didn't like the pie, it was too big and a little dry but I liked mine but was glad of the gravy. The town is nice and friendly and not too big. If we were returning to the area we would be more than happy to stay again.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra for the larger room with a bath

The staff did make me feel welcomed during my 3 night stay in November 2013. The accommodation was very clean, and breakfast was nice. Additionally, the hospitality was good and staff being very obliging to make my stay as comfortable as possible. However, what I did find annoying was how my floor in my room was on a slant, and those floorboards being very squeaky/noisy during the night, also found the walls are quite thin (I could literally hear nexts doors phone conversations). I also remember asking for a sandwich before leaving (instead of a sit down breakfast), I never got one (no cooking staff?). In contrast to other B&B's, I found this accommodation average with the return service to be high as expected . There is also quite a long walk to the beach. I give this accommodation a 5/10, but I probably won't return there.

We are pleased you felt welcomed during your stay with us in April/November 2013 and found the hospitality very good with the staff very obliging. A sandwich for breakfast is a regular service we provide for people in a rush and are sorry to hear of any confusion.
