“Lovely Weekend Break”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Just returned from a money supermarket 2 night deal at this hotel. Had a lovely relaxing two days at the Royal Sportsman Hotel staff were all friendly, nothing was too much trouble, lovely food, nice clean rooms. Only negatives were the hotel was a bit 'dated' needs a bit of money spending on it to bring it up to date, wifi was very dodgy a silly system of getting 'codes' from reception which IF they worked! Only worked for 2 hours then you had to get a new code...... Most bizarre!!

We booked a weekend at the Royal Sportsman just by chance as we got a voucher deal on 2 nights for the price of one in the late winter. We arrived to a very warm and friendly welcome at reception, and had a lovely spacious room which had been warmed up for us during the afternoon. The meal we had was delicious, and the service excellent without being over fussy. Fantastic local produce very well cooked and beautifully presented. Great location for public transport or car travel, and perfect for exploring so much delightful scenery and historic heritage in every direction. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the Royal Sportsman Hotel from 20th to 22nd Feb with out 5 and 6 year old and what fantastic few days we had. There are lots of great beaches for the children to explore. Portmerion and Steam train on the doorstop. We went on a winter deal from the hotel so got discounted room rate, free entry to Portmerion and free bottle of wine with our meal. The service was excellent, food excellent (a little expensive but very nice) and very well presented. Couldn't fault the room. Nice and clean included little extras little cotton balls etc and even offered fresh milk on request. They also had a covered garage which removed any parking problems.

Room Tip: We had room 4 which had access to a shared patio at the back which would be useful in warmer weather...

We have just returned from our first stay at the Sportsman. We took our dog and were given a room in the 'courtyard' which was excellent, a lovely big family room which was clean and tidy.
The manager was very welcoming and attentive and gave us plenty of information on the area including 'dog friendly' pubs and attractions.
As we stayed over Valentines weekend the chef prepared a special menu, the food was presented and cooked beautifully. The bar food was all home cooked and also excellent.
We really do not identify with some of the bad reviews of the hotel and the Manager certainly was not rude to us he could not have been more friendly.
We would definately book the hotel again.

Room Tip: If you are taking the dog or you want good spacious rooms ask for one of the courtyard rooms.

clean and tidy and does what it says on the can, the room was basic, what i did notice was not once did i hear a welsh accent from a member of the hotel staff, which was strange with the high unemployment in the town. but all in all a safe bet. just overpriced.

Warm and informative reception on arrival , was a problem with the booking through money supermarket but this was quickly resolved by the owner.
Room a bit on the small side, and long way from main reception, and the bathroom a bit small to manoeuvre , we also found the bed to be noisy and not very comfortable.
The food was excellent and the best breakfast I've had for a long time , couldn't stop eating the lovely home made bread and marmalade . Word of warning........... If you fancy trying the home made pie don't have the gorgeous soup starter, or it will be a challenge. Never seen such a large pie for one person. The eating area was lovely when the fire was lit, very cosy.good location lovely part of the country to visit, countryside very pretty, hope to return again in the summer

well a hundred years ago as a thriving Victorian holiday destination maybe I'd have expected Porthmadog to have an excellent hotel, but honestly in 2013 it was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant especially rewarded our fairly basic menu choices with truly lovely food, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We'd chosen the smallest double room which was well appointed and quite adequate despite sharing it with our two labradors. Well impressed - very highly recommended.
