“Oldie but good”
Reviewed August 8, 2011

Second visit after 5 years to Stonefield Castle Hotel. Comfortable and welcoming but house in need of restoration. Dining room has excellent views, great menu and staff. Old and tired in places. Gardens and walks to Loch Fyne are worth seeing.

Room Tip: First floor in original building

Stayed here for 2 nights due to it's close proximity to the Islay ferry. As others have commented, the expectations raised upon driving up the the outwardly impressive building are very quickly dashed as soon as you enter.
There is old, which is just fine. Then there is old and tatty, which is not. Stonefield falls into the latter group. Although cheap at 130 pounds a night for 2 people including dinner, I would have paid more to ensure a habitable room with some matching furniture.
The dining room has wonderful views over the coastline, but again spoiled by the old and poorly maintained infrastructure. In absolute fairness though, I have to say that the seafood served was fresh and of excellent quality.
Finally, apart from no apparent investment in the fabric of the hotel, there is no investment in staff either. Bless them, they tried; but there is no hiding a lack of even basic training where restaurant staff were a shambles and the girl at the bar had not a clue about serving drinks.
All in all, not a place to stay until such time as the owners start investing.

We booked a room last minute for an unplanned trip into the Highlands. The description of the hotel on the website looked amazing and we were well pleased when we saw it from the outside on arrival. When we were shown to our room, we realised that this was in the 1970s annexe. Immediately on entering the room there was the overwhelming aroma of mould and the amount of cobwebs around the window would have been impressive even for a medieval castle. When we complained about this we were told that there were no other rooms free and all that could be done was to spray some air freshener into the room. The servicing of the room had obviously done in a slap dash manner and there were no tissues or sanitary bags. In a B&B I would have described the room as cosy, in an allegedly 4* hotel I can only describe it as cramped. At 04:00 in the morning the central heating came on and there was a rhythmic banging in the radiators followed by a slow drip fro one of the heating pipes.

On the positive side is the location and the superb (not cheap) restaurant, which serves sea food of superb quality.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms in the 1970s annexe

Hotel has seen better days. It has potential to be something special but obviously needs money spent on it. Furnishings need upgraded. No furniture in our room or bathroom matched. Gardens, which are well known for their spectacular rhododendrons, need more upkeep which is a pity. We had last minute booking so good price. Wouldn't have been worth full rate. Doubt if it merits 4 star.

Visited at the start of July for a long weekend. Was not disappointed when the hotel came into view and were fortunate enough to enjoy an excellent weekend of weather enabling us to explore the expansive hotel grounds.

The room itself was of a good standard although there was no cold water in the bathroom. On raising the issue the receptionist did not appear to know what to do and nothing was done to rectify the problem for the remainder of our stay.

The staff however were extremely friendly and helpful, especially Andreas the barman who looked after us very well.

Overall a very enjoyable stay, would definitely return in the future.

Booked for two nights, would have loved to stay longer. The setting is beautiful, lots of walks around the grounds and the views are tremendous. Our room was perfect and the best shower ever! All the staff were marvelous, polite ,friendly and very proffessional.
The food was fantastic, far better than expected. Would highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for peace and quiet and something a bit special.

I cannot believe I'm reading such positive reviews for this hotel on Trip Advisor(?). My wife and I stayed there for 2 nights last week and it was horrific. Four stars? Really??? At first, it flatters to deceive; the setting is magnificent. Views over the Loch, beautiful grounds, grand old building. When you look more closely, you see the grime caked around the bath and shower fittings, the peeling wallpaper, the filthy carpets, windows and furniture. The staff are all very young and simply not trained or supervised. I felt sorry for Rachel trying to run the bar (she can't have been more than 17?) and Heather doing waitressing shifts breakfast and dinner and cleaning rooms in between. The food was inedible and at £25 for a leathery sirloin steak, outrageous in cost. On the second night after I complained about the steak another table of guests came over to chat and said their meal the previous night was dreadful and they refused to pay for it. That night at 2 AM my wife awoke with stomach cramps and spent the next few hours throwing up. I got off light and just spent the next three days with diarrhoea. In the morning there was no manager to argue with. "Clare will be here after 12 if you'd like to wait". I refused to pay the residue of the bill and left. Don't go to this place if you value your health. It is owned by Oxford Hotels. They should be ashamed of themselves.
