Description: A beautiful historic public house and restaurant, recently refurbished and under new management. Our bar offers a wide selection of local and national ales, and a great choice of spirits, wines and gins. Our restaurant offers great food made using locally sourced produce, at a reasonable price.

If you are in the area you have to visit here. The pub was the setting for the James Herriott pub scenes and there are loads of interesting pictures on the walls. The bar has a great social atmosphere and is clearly the locals favoured meeting place..Good local beers on offer. Scored three as the food was a tadge disappointing....rather overdone cod.

This bar and restaurant in the pretty village of Askrigg between Hawes and Leyburn is a good place to visit. A menu which is imaginative with frequent changes depending on availability of locally sourced ingredients; the same menu served in the bar and restaurant, both have open fires in the winter, really cosy! A starter of Tian of crab and cucumber and another of Gravadlax and salmon particularly good and a generous main course serving of Rack of Lamb was excellent. Good choice of beers, wines, liqueurs and malt whisky. Well worth the visit!

booked in for dinner as we were staying in the village on holiday for christmas and what a let down,my chips were overcooked and burned my peppercorn sauce for my steak was thin and waterery my husbands stew was very dry and the dumplings hard as rocks.the restaurant was empty when we sat to eat and we still waited 40 minutes for starters to come out.will not recommend this place it is a shame as the pub is lovely to sit and have a drink next to the open fire

Sorry it has taken so long to respond and I thank you for replying to my message giving the details of your visit. After talking to our chefs and the foh staff I have been able to find out why you had such a wait for your starters.

I believe you ordered a 10oz beef burger for your child which you wanted to come at the same time as your starters, the beef burger takes a good 25 minutes to cook due to its size and everything is cooked to order, this is why your starters would have been delayed. If you had just ordered your starters this generally takes only 10 minutes depending on the items ordered.

I have raised the issue about the watery sauce with the chef and we have since improved the sauce quality.

Thank you for your comments and I hope if you are in Askrigg again you will visit us to hopefully change your opinion of us.

This place has character. The drinks are expensive and the food not the best in the area. That said it's nice but not worth the money.
