“Lovely place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2013

We headed out for Sunday lunch for my husbands birthday. Gorgeous pub in an isolated location - perfect place for Hadrians's Wall walkers. It's not massive, but it's a "proper" pub with a roaring fire.

Game Pie for him, Turkey & chesnut pie for me - both utterly delicious. Menu is surprisingly extensive for such a small place. Childrens menu was the usual kids fare - our 7yo had a cheeseburger but he said it was lovely! Staff couldn't have been nicer or done more for us.

“The Place to Go For Pies”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2013

Game pie, Beef and venison pie, lots of hearty fare here. Christmas dinner 2012 started with the best mushrooms in garlic, white wine and cream sauce I've ever tasted. Grilled prawns okay. Roast Gressingham Goose a bit of a let down. I know goose is difficult to cook. Very hard indeed to get crispy skin and juicy flesh. But this was quite dry and no skin came with it at all. No complaints about quantity of food or conviviality. Got to pay a visit for the pies.

“Great hospitality on Christmas Day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

We popped in on Christmas Day after a long day's walk along the trail, to find that the inn was actually closed. But the kind hosts offered drinks and advice in how to travel onwards, and allowed us to stay with them until transportation had been found. Great hospitality at this friendly place - thank you!

“Perfect spot for a late lunch following a walk along Hadrians Wall”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

We visited in November and were starving following an energetic walk along Hadrians Wall from the Steel Rigg Car Park to Housesteads and back via the Military Road. This pub couldn't have been in a better location for us.

I had a very tastey chicken and mushroom pie with salad and boiled potatoes and my sister had chicken and rice which was delicious.

I would definitely return if I am in the area again.

“Great welcome on the military road!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2012

We stopped at the Milecastle for lunch on the way from Newcastle to Carlisle and were warmly greeted by the landlady and a fantastic, log fire burning in the bar. The Christmas decorations added to the atmosphere as we sat and had a drink looking out over the military road. As we were on our way to a family get-together that evening, we just had sandwiches and a drink. However, the menu was very extensive, including lots of vegetarian options and gluten free meals. Even on a very cold December day, the pub was busy and clearly everyone was enjoying the food. Yes, you have to travel as it's not on the main A69, but worth the trip for really good, fresh home-cooked food. Next time we will make sure we have time for lunch and maybe stay, as there were rooms at the side of the pub. A great place to eat, drink and soak up the atmosphere of the Roman wall.
