The Mansion House Hotel
Ranked #2 of 7 Holbeach B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 31, 2012

We booked 2 of the cottages at the back of the Mansion House Hotel as we were visiting my in-laws for their 55th wedding anniversary party at their home nearby. So the location was spot on for us.

Slight delay at the start as the main front door to the hotel was locked & we were unsure where to go but we finally found someone who took us to the cottages around the back.

The cottages were a home from home. Very clean, very tidy. Me, my husband & another couple stayed in the Mouse Hole Cottage which had 3 bedrooms. 1 double (with a v noisy bed), 1 double with a single bed in then 1 single room with a cot in.

Outside this cottage was an open space with table & chairs which they let us use at breakfast time as we were self catering. Our friends stayed in the slightly smaller Owl Barn Cottage so came over to the open sapce to have breakfast together!

I think if you have the right amount of people, these cottages are such good value! So comfy, great central location & the family who run the establishment are so friendly & lovely.

I would definitley stay there again & I have recommend it for the rest of our family who visit the area often.

Thanks so much guys!

Stayed at the masion house hotel for my wife's 40th birthday as we had plans in spalding.
This is a fantastic personal hotel that you don't get from the big chain hotels.

The hotel was full of character and was very clean, we had a large room with 4 poster and period features, was an amazing retreat away from the kids!

The food in the mansion house was exceptional, what you wouldn't expect from a georgeion house tucked away in spalding. The owner and chef knows how to cook food!!
All courses we had here were amazing.

Previous review complaints about parking but this didn't affect us, could understand being tricky when busy.
This style of house was never built with parking in mind, so it's understandable

A true gem of a hotel and if we're ever heading to spalding, we know where we'll be staying and I suggest you do!

Having to travel on a regular basis for business purposes I was originally looking for a small hotel suited to the needs of the business traveller working in the Lincolnshire area. Having stayed at many places previously Travel Lodges, Premier Travel Inns and other hotel chains, I was looking for hotel that filled the following criteria:-

Small informal hotel - not too large!
Good rooms with firm confortable beds
Good food
Friendly welcoming staff

Having spoken to colleagues at the company I was working for, they said try the Manison House in Holbeach. I am glad I did, for me working on a long term contract for a locally based company this was an excellent find. I am now nearing the end of my contract up here in Lincolnshire and I can honestly say that after many months of staying on a regular basis at the Mansion House that I have found it a very pleasurable experience whilst away from home. The informal bar and restaurant where you can very quickly strike up a conversation and have a quiet relaxing drink with another guest that you have only just met. The owners Richard and Sam go out of their way to ensure that all of your needs are catered for, so for me it has provided a very relaxed atmosphere which when you are away from home on a regular basis is important. It has become for me a Home from Home.

Yes you might find some of the rooms a little bit quirky as they all different and have their own character, but this adds to the experience of staying here.

So in summary - An excellent small family run hotel, with great food, comfortable rooms, reasonable rates and a friendly greeting

Have stayed in the Mansion house hotel numerous times by now. Mainly stayed there during business trips and feel at home from the minute of stepping in. The owner and his family are really friendly and always willing to help you hope with whatever issue you have. The rooms are clean, nice and very cozy.

The food is definitively something to recommend. The owner is able to create each night something’s special, and learn his skill in France.

All in all a great place to stay !!!

We arrived after a long cycle ride to find another couple waiting outside a locked hotel. They eventually contacted the owner to be told where their room key was hidden, however he had no idea about us, in spite of making a credit card reservation 2 wks prior as it was our wedding anniversary treat. He told me it was my challenge Annika moment...as I followed his instructions to find room keys in an empty hotel. Our fellow guests told him we'd help ourselves to a drink from the bar, as we assumed a shame faced owner would soon turn up to prepare our dinner. Not a bit of it, we were all ravernous and after sharing a packet of hotel peanuts made our way to the only place in town serving food, The Coach and Horses and wished we'd booked in there.
We eventually caught up with the owner by knocking on his door after returning from the pub. No apology was forthcoming, just excuses blaming his family and Sunday night's being quiet. Our room was ok, but towels were missing and bath had a mouldy sealant edge.

It was no better at breakfast, with no menu or friendly greeting and help After the usual cereal the owner suggested poached eggs and turned up with 3 plonked on toast, and then sat and read the paper. He did make a small reduction in our bill but told me it was hard opening a hotel 365 days a year and putting up with Dutch men who want beers at 2 in the morning! The Mansion House is a fine old building and it deserves better that this arrogant and unprofessional owner.

We attended an outside wedding reception at the end of June and can honestly say even though we all had a good night and celebrated the bride and groom’s big day, the venue did not provide a service fit for the occasion.
It was supposed to have seating arranged in a marquee at the back of the hotel – there was only just enough space, the tables had been squeezed into the marquee (joke! actually 3 gazebos attached to each other and not necessarily to the floor!). One join was right over the head table, directly over the bride and groom so, when we arrived at the venue it had just stopped raining and needless to say the rain had poured in over the table, chairs and cake and soaked everything. The floor was uneven and covered in a really bad fake grass carpet. It would have been better without it, as the boards under the carpet moved and you fell off them nearly falling over.
The tables had not even been set correctly and the limited number of staff available were not even wearing anything resembling a uniform. After having to ask the staff to change the soaking wet table cloths and dry the chairs another shower of water went over another table. This was due to a hidden irrigation system being used whilst we were trying to squeeze past each other and get seated. Again the staff just looked on and had to be prompted into action.
The BBQ food was OK, some burgers were still raw and the drink did not arrive until after the groom and best man had made their speeches.
I have to say the organisation and attention to detail were non existant and for such a big occasion (being paid for!) you would expect a certain level to be provided. I would not recommend this as a venue for anything. I cannot comment on the bedrooms or any other meals, but as for a function venue - no way.
Bride’s to be, all I can say to you if you are considering this venue ask to see it when it has been set up for someone else and then decide.

Thank you for your review.
We realise that a Bride and Grooms day is always a special one. We are a small family run hotel and offer an informal service at a price to suite an individual couples budget. The couple in question had been in on several occassions to discuss with us their requirements and budget for their day. They were fully aware what they were getting for their budget.
They were also fully aware of the Marquee set up, which was two permanent Marqees with an extra gazebo brought in on the day set up due to the unpredictable weather. The issue with wet tables was resolved as soon as discovered, unfortunately it did mean a slight delay in everyone eating.
I question the table setting comments, as the tables were set to match the food for the day.
Our staff do not wear a uniform, they are simply required to look smart and certainly no food was served raw..........indeed there were no comments or complaints on the day to suggest this.

Unfortunately the speeches took place very rapidly after the desserts which did not allow time for the staff to clear the desserts and bring out the sparking wine at the same time. However the sparkling wine was being poured as the speeches started and brought to the table as soon as possible. There was also no communication from the couple to us about when the speeches were going to occur.
Unfortunately people who book a budget wedding can not expect the same service as someone on a greater budget. Unfortunately people who attend other peoples weddings are not privee to the financial arrangements of the Bride and Groom or whether or not the financial obligations have indeed been met!
The couple did not pass comment on the day or at any time after until we approached them a week and a half later to find out when they were planning to come in to pay the balance.
It is unfortunate that some incidents occurred during the wedding and we would all wish for these to be non-exsistant, however we all appreciate that mis-haps occur but these were rectified as soon as possible.

We had two other weddings the week before and week after, both ran smoothly and all were very happy.
