“Excellent in every way, thoroughly enjoyed.”

The Inn is under new management, they have been in for 11 months. The staff are all very welcoming and polite. Nothing is too much trouble. Paul and Gerry go out of their way to ensure their guests are well looked after but they respect their guests' privacy. Paul has a dry sense of humour and is willing to have a chat if that is what you want. Unlike a stay in a hotel you are made to feel included even by the locals who use the bar.
The bar is all you could expect from a building of such age, with a roaring fire, genuinely ancient oak beams and an excellent stock of spirits and a Hereford ale. Glorious!
The rooms are clean and well appointed with comforatble beds and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, the en suite does not have a separate shower but instead you have a good sized bath with a hand-held shower. Fluffy towels and complementary toiletries are provided.
The food, prepared by Geraldine the landlady, is home cooked and locally sourced. The only problem we had with the breakfasts was the amount, a 'full english' is likely to defeat most people except perhaps for a 14 year old with hollow legs! The bacon is local and took me back to my youth when bacon did not shrink, it was excellent. We had an excellent evening meal.
We stayed here when visiting the Hay Festival, it took only 7 minutes to drive to the Festival car park.
This has to be one of the most civilized and enjoyable stays we have had in a hotel or inn.
We hope to be able to stay next year, if you want a memorable stay in a stunning part of the country I believe you would find it very hard to improve on the Rhydspence Inn.

This old inn, set on the Welsh border, has a unique character that is well worth experiencing. Used it as a base for the Hay Festival, just 4 miles and 10 minutes away. Great to escape the Festival crowds at the end of the day and return for a meal in a quiet rural setting. Fine hospitality. Even got to chat with one of the Hay speakers who was staying there.

A great location for Hay-on-Wye festivals, two long distance walking paths and some wonderful scenery. The rooms are large and spotlessly clean. When I arrived i was treated more like a guest of the family than a guest of a hotel. I was travelling on my own but conversation in the bar that evening was easy and natural with both locals and other guests. Good food, a day-satisfying breakfast and well kept beer.

Don't believe some of the nonsense in a few of the reviews this place is worth seeking out. Oh, and before you go ask the Landlord about the carved dragons. I won't spoil the story by telling it.

From the time we arrived till the time we checked out we were given excellent service and a VERY warm welcome. This is an Old 14th century Inn, not a 'hotel' (that's why we chose it) and the new owners live upstairs. This is their house and Paul (the owner) likes to treat you as special house guests. He enjoys a laugh and a joke with his guests and the locals that visit the bar and restaurant in the evenings. On arrival we were given a 'tour' of the Inn and its grounds which are sat in a very beautiful part of the country.
Our room (6) was in the 'new' extension, spacious and the bed and pillows were very comfortable giving us a really good nights sleep. The bathroom was a really good size with big fluffy white towels and toiletries. Being an old Inn there was no shower, only a bath, but that gave me the chance to have a relaxing soak for a while, turned out to be quite a treat! They have added some lovely taps with a telephone style shower attachment so washing hair is not a problem.
The bar area has a roaring fire every evening...even in May it was quite chilly in the evenings, although we were very lucky to have had 4 days of glorious weather and drove around the Brecon Beacons/Elan Valley in my Beetle soft-top with the roof down!
We would return in the evening and chose to eat in the bar (they also have a restaurant). Geraldine (Paul's wife) runs the kitchen single handed and the menu is creative, varied and really good and surprising not overpriced. We are real foodies & I really can't understand a previous review that spoke about it being 'care home' food. It is all locally sourced & cooked fresh with home made sauces & puddings to die for.
The cooked breakfast's were probably one of the best we have had in a long time. You can virtually have anything in any quantity, just ask for your preferences! All cooked to order. I had 1 of everything and really struggled to finish it!
If you are ummmming and ahhhing ...Go! I will be surprised if you are disappointed. We will return!

We have stayed at the Rhydspence Inn on numerous occasions with the current tenants and have fully enjoyed the experience. We don't usually write reviews but on this occasion we feel we must as there has been some poor remarks made that do not reflect its true character and would strongly recommend anyone to try it for them selves and not be put off by poor reviews.
We really like the character of this old Inn and Paul and Geraldine really made our stay so enjoyable and relaxing with a breakfast to die for that really sets you up for the day. So go on try it for your selves as we did and you won't regret it.

Room Tip: Try the four poster bed room it give you the royal feeling,

We went for a meal on a cold April evening and felt warm and welcomed the moment we stepped through the door. It wasn't just the owners but the entire staff who had the same ethos of making sure we had a nice evening. The food was delicious and even my daughters fussy eating habits were dealt with a smile. We run our own business (not catering) and have customer service at the top of our priorities and Paul and Gerrie met all of our expectations. As a customer you want to feel valued and we certainly felt that and will definately eat here again next time we're visiting the area.
