“Great combination of boutique hotel and local pub /restaurant”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

We had a reservation for a meal at this lovely country pub but bedrooms were fully booked. Luckily for us, a forecast snow storm weekend caused a corporate booking to cancel so we got to stay in The Black Fushia Room which was very comfortable. Even though we had the hotel to ourselves, there was still a pleasant buzz in the bar, very friendly staff and a roaring fire. We had a fabulous meal. Everyone was friendly, food great and common areas clean, comfortable and welcoming. I would certainly return.

Room Tip: Worth splashing out on Black Fushia - i did not see others but had read some reviews that some rooms...

We stayed in this hotel after an evening with friends for a shoot dinner. Whilst we had eaten here before this was our first overnight stay. The room was small but seemed adequately appointed.
Until every time I passed our sleigh bed I thumped my hip on the footplate! Bathroom was a good size but I missed a magnifying mirror. The staff were absolutely wonderful, anticipating our every need. we will stay again but hopefully not in room 3.

Room Tip: we didn't see any others but room 3 is quite small.

Decided to stay on sunday they have a good deal for d/b/b. so must say the food is vey good here so thank you very much for this, but not for the service of the manageress.Firstly when we both phoned to book room late sunday afternoon we were told no upgrade here even if we have any better rooms left so don't ask as you defiently won't get one here .When you arrive here ,yes it is a lovely building and well kept gardens but it lacks a good management.Firstly you will not be shown to your room,or any where else in this hotel. So ,no kettle in rooms no biscuits I went back to the bar as the reception is hardly ever manned to ask about this and was told you phone from your room and they bring your drinks. We must have got the worst room as very small, hot at night and very noisy ,above bar saw some of other rooms all looked alot better.Lastly will just mention not all tea and coffee is complimentery,we asked a waitress after our meal if we could have our dessert and FREE coffee in our bedroom as they charge for them any where downstairs, she told us yes this is correct. Breakfast is very nice but no help yourself table with fruits youghts crosaints etc you have to ask once again Yes the breakfast is very small so make sure you ask for everything they have. Checking out we noticed £5.00 for coffees added, we refused to pay for them as told they were free in bedroom only to be told by manageress If you order them downstairs instead of your bedroom you will get charged so had to pay for them'.This is shocking management and she needs to take time out and go to some higher quaility hotels i.e hoste arms in burnham market who give you Free tea ,coffee where ever you drink it and free upgrades every time if they can.Would have come back here for food and value but defeinetly not now Shame on you for your principles.

Room Tip: beware room 5 over bar noisy.

We are of course very pleased that you enjoyed the food and good value at The Bildeston Crown but as the Hotel Manager I believe you refer to, I would like to address a few of the issues you raised as shortcomings, for the benefit of other potential guests.

I appreciate that as a local guest, and the number of calls you made to us that Sunday, that you were indeed looking for a last minute treat. Our Sunday Dine and Stay: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast (Sunday menu) £130.00* per couple in a standard room is already significantly discounted with a saving of £24.00 (15.5%) on the rack rate. Sundays do tend to be quieter and it would be unusual for us to have 100% occupancy. However, on a Saturday night, it is unusual for us not to be full. As a result, it makes sense to focus Housekeeping on the Sunday morning on those rooms booked for the Sunday night and Monday night with maybe a couple more for last minute sales. That was the case on the day of your visit and as such, although not full, not all rooms were actually available. We do give upgrades, especially for regular customers, but the facts remain that 5 of our 12 rooms are classified as “standard” and so it is just not practical or commercially viable to give upgrades at every opportunity.

You say you were not shown to your room. I certainly wouldn't challenge any of your recollections but now I’m wondering if indeed I was the “manageress” you refer to. As you rightly point out, we don’t have the reception manned 24/7. We have only one receptionist and so there are frequent times when it is left to the manager on duty or the general Front of House staff to welcome our guests. To have the reception fully manned 24/7 would require a further two employees to cover every shift and that would be disproportionate for our current business model and current pricing. We review our staffing requirements on a regular basis and your comment has been helpful in pointing out some of the disadvantages of operating more as a “restaurant with rooms” than a full service hotel.

I am also pleased that you raised the issue of tea and coffee in the bedrooms. Having visited, you will appreciate that as a Grade 2* listed building there are, shall we say, challenges in terms of multiple plug sockets and standard fixtures and fittings which are that much easier in more modern build facilities. In brief it is just not possible to have tea making facilities in every bedroom and so we have decided, with the view that we like to give a personal service, that tea and coffee in the bedrooms are complimentary at any time. We did trial having the facility to help yourself to tea and coffee from service points on the landing but it was simply not used and the idea abandoned. We are constantly looking at ways to provide this essential service in a more efficient manner and so your points are useful. We can see that the current policy differentiating between ordering from the bedroom and ordering from the Bar has caused confusion in this instance and so will be trialling for the next month a revised policy which states that guests receive complimentary tea and coffee wherever they are in the building. So thank you for bringing this to our attention.

You say that you would have come back here for food and value. I believe you have essentially summed up our strengths and what makes us different from much of our competition. Hopefully, you will continue to remember us for these strengths and that you will visit us again.

Hayley Lee.

This is probably as good as you will get eating in East Anglia. I’ve been here a few times over the last few years, and it gets better each time. There is a large bar and pre-meal waiting area. There are a number of menus, featuring seasonable and mainly local food. There is some very skilful cooking going on in the kitchen, and the desserts are exceptional, almost too good to eat, almost.

The staff are very well trained, friendly and helpful. This visit they seemed less formal and more relaxed than on previous occasions, that is, in my opinion, a good thing.

As you would expect with food of this quality, the Crown at Bildeston is not cheap, but it is not over priced either. It is good value for money. My wife chose from the set menu, while I went for the Classics, my main course cost about the same as her meal. The wine list is extensive, and there are some very nice wines on it.

It has a large car park, is dog friendly, pity it is a four-hour drive from home.

Have been here before but not for a while. Today it was Sunday Lunch and as usual it was just excellent. For starters I had goats cheese, one portion cooked and one portion cold served with a little apple and hazelnut. My husband had what I would call a Scotch Egg with a difference! This was a hardboiled egg coated with smoked haddock and breadcrumbs and it was actually called a fish cake. The presentation of both these starters was just a masterpiece. We then both had the Roast Red Poll Beef with all the trimmings. Just cooked beautifully, pink, how we like it and I have never seen such large and good looking Yorkshire Puddings. Restaurant was very busy but staff coped very well. Timing between courses was perfect. Sorry no room left for a dessert which was a shame as I was looking forward to the apple crumble and custard. Highly recommended but you do need to book. Looking forward to another visit soon.

This is a charming pub hotel and restaurant. My room was fantastic, very large with an incredibly large and comfortable bed. Staff were friendly and the breakfast was well cooked using tasty local ingredients.

Definitely worth a visit.

A mixture of business, social and pleasure brought us to the Bildeston Crown following a recommendation from friends. We were greeted with a very warm welcome with a complimentary pot of tea on arrival, taken in the comfortable lounge with the glow and sound of crackling from the open log fire. A perfect start to a weekend. The staff were all friendly and a 'personal touch' was the order of the day from all staff. A very comfortable bed and facilities meeting all our needs were presented to us throughout our stay. Dinner was excellent and most worthy of 3 AA Rosettes. A good wine list with quality wines covering many regions and a price range to suit everyone. There is a lift to the 1st floor to assist those with mobility needs. Tea / coffee is complimentary and served anywhere in the establishment upon request. Our only observation away from the 100% positive was that we never managed to order any tea with room service on Sunday morning as nobody answered the telephone despite several attempts. A minor point that did not spoil our stay but is worthy of note by management - if they are to advertise such a facility they should ensure staff are available.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 on the 1st floor are close to the lift.
