“Heavenly hotel in magnificent scenery”

This is my second review after our third visit but we enjoy it more every time we go. The hotel continues to be absolutely spotless with every little detail looked after with loving care. Our room with a terrace with a view of the beautiful mountains and vineyards of el Priorat was a joy. We also enjoyed a light dinner in the restaurant with, apart from the pleasure of the food, we had the interesting local knowledge of our waiter (sorry I don't remember his name) and after enjoyed a drink on the terrace in the square in front of the hotel. As always Cristina was the perfect host. We'll be back again for sure.

Room Tip: If you like a terrace with a fantastic view with 2 sun loungers - although a smaller room - choose R...

The Canadian tour continues with our first 2 night stop of the trip. From arrival we were royally looked after. We took 4 of the rooms and all superior standard , they were very spacious, well furnished and the large bath rooms had large walk in showers. The 9 of us had dinner in the hotel restaurant served with the house Priorat winer which was reasonably priced and very good. The meal was excellent and seemed to keep the Canadian contigent happy even though some of them have a comfort zone that does not get beyond pizza, pasta and burgers. Cristina organised a bodega visit for us in Gratallops for the following day whch was exceptional. We have visited the Priorat many times over the years but this was our first stay here and once again without doubt will return.

Room Tip: Don't hesitate to ask Cristina for help and advise

This beautiful small hotel is located at the top of a steep hill in the village of Gratallops in the Prioriat region of Spain. It is lovely with each room individually designed and decorated. The owner, Christina, speaks English and was extremely helpful with arranging plans. The hotel has a beautiful outdoor terrace from which to enjoy cocktails at sunset. There are many wineries in the village and in surrounding villages to visit and good hiking trails connect many of the communities. The room came with a very good continental breakfast buffet and excellent coffee! There was also a small refrigerator with drinks included in the room at no extra charge. The restaurant also serves a wonderful dinner with an excellent wine list. The village itself is very beautiful but be aware that while it is quiet, you will hear the occasional dog or rooster crowing in the morning! Truly a one-of-a-kind experience for people who want to see more of the Priorat region. The streets in these towns are very narrow. If you are driving, I recommend coming in the main entrance to town and parking by the church and walking up the hill to the hotel to scout out the route before attempting to drive up. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: They are all individualized; tell Christina what you need and let her pick one.

Me and my wife decided to spend some days in New Years on Cal Llop Hotel trusting on tripadvisor reviews. I must confess that we were really afraid of what would we were doing. By now, I can guarantee that was a great choice.

First of all, the location: in a small village… really, really small. And beautiful. So, I must register that you will need a car to know the region. Around the village there are great places to go. Another villages and small cities wonderful, with a great view and very pleasant to visit.

The hotel: if you are looking for luxury, this is not where do you have to go. It’s not simple, but it’s not a luxury hotel. It’s very (really) comfortable, with a great bed and a spacious room. The bathroom is really big. But there is no elevator. So, if you have a lot of luggage, be careful because you will have to take them to your room by yourselves. The reception stay closed during part of the afternoon, but they explain it to you when you book your room.

Cristina: yes, I had to register something just to explain what (who) is Cristina. It’s part of the hotel. And, probably, one of the best parts. Cristina try to, every time, see if everything is ok, taking care of her guests as they were family. She is so kindly that it’s something even difficult to describe. A great person, very precious!!!

The food: unbelievable! Just this word to describe what a Cal Llop guest eats. Delicious is a word very poor to describe what we ate during our stay… so: unbelievable!

The wineries: it’s really close to a lot of priorat wineries. We had a problem: between Christmas and New Years almost everyone closed. But Cristina resolved the problem find at least one that was opened: Clos Figueres.

Finally, I must confess: what a great stay!!! I’m used to stay in a lot of luxury hotels (4+ or 5 star), but this experience was just perfect. And Cristina is part of this different but excellent experience.

We would have given Cal Llop an excellent rating had it not been for check in not being allowed between 2PM and 6PM. Generally this would not be a problem if you could drop your bags off, but the entire building was locked down with no entrance. In addition, the rest of the town seems to shut down for that period, so its not like you could go have a nice lunch and wine or explore shops during the "lock-out". We were in the area the same time last year and had lunch at Porta del Priorat (http://www.portadelpriorat.com) about a 25 minute drive from Cal Llop. Had we known then we were again so close to Porta Del Priorat we would have made the drive for lunch. We ended up driving there the next day and had the same fabulous experience as the year before, we highly recommend. Back to the hotel, Cal Llop is a beautiful boutique hotel with nice amenities, large bathroom and shower (we stayed in Suite #8 which has a panoramic view of the mountains). The ceiling, however, does slant down toward the windows so if you are taller, like we are, you have to duck down to walk around a big portion of the room. The view from the bed in the morning is breath taking. Christina arranged an unforgettable wine tasting with the winemaker (Fredi Torres) of Sao del Coster. Fredi, who speaks perfect English, picked us up and took us to see his land where he grows his grapes and then on to his cellar/wine making shop in his home in town (a short walk from the hotel). We barrel tasted some amazing wines and learned about Fredi's fabulous talents in wine making and passion for good wine. We ate both nights at the restaurant in the hotel and the food was good with an expansive wine list. We only had breakfast one morning, but we were not too impressed with the minimal display (but not uncommon for other places we stayed). Parking is available (free) right across from hotel. There appears to be only 3 back in spots, but the town allows for at least 2 or 3 more in front of the park area. When driving in to town our Garmin took us to the first exit in to town, don't take that one (roads limited). Go to the main entrance in town and then follow up to the hotel.

We stayed here for one night and the location could not be more convenient if you are visiting Priorat wine region. The hotel is situated in the quaint town of Gratallops, which the wine capital of the region - there are about a dozen of bodegas within walking distance so you don't even need to hire a car to visit some of them for a wine tasting (appointments essential). The hotel itself is a small boutique hotel with a lot of character. Our room was a the top of the house and had a reclining ceiling having been converted from a an old granary. We arrived late and did not see the view but when we woke up we were astonished by the view from our room - mountains, terraced vineyards, fog in the valleys, a church - so romantic! We also had dinner at the hotel's restaurant and would highly recommend it too! The food was beautifully presented, with modern twists, yet authentic. Wish we stayed longer!

We stayed four nights at this hotel in Gratallops in the center of the Priorat wine region. The staff is very friendly, and Cristina is very helpful in getting you organized. The location is perfectly situated in the center of the Priorat, allowing you access to all the wineries and sights within short distance. The superior rooms are rather special, but cozy, allowing for a siesta after a large lunch. The food in the restaurant is good to very good and the wine list is large, offering anything from the simpler wines to top quality. And it is one of the few restaurants in the region that is open in the evening. A perfect base to explore the region.
