“Room 101”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

Upgraded to a junior suite which was stunning 10 foot thick walls and views from both sides - hotel amazing - only downside complained 3 times regarding the noise from the room above which keep us awake sounded like a bowling alley running along the floor and tv on full blast. Reported to night reception who was not particularly helpful. Apart from that the hotel reception rooms beautiful. Would stay again but take ear plugs.

I'm lucky! I asked for a room with a balcony and got two! The only room with two - one facing the Plaza, the other overlooking the harbour. Room 101 (I kid you not) is superb. The walls must be 10 feet thick. And the public rooms are stunning as you might expect given the age of the place - some parts are lovingly preserved ruins that add to the atmosphere. The only slight niggle is that you'd expect tea/coffee making facilities in the room in this standard of hotel. The upside though is free WiFi. The staff are delightfully friendly and helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend booking Room 101.

Beautiful building, good room but access to the room was difficult and the bed was really not good. We asked for one bed for two as opposed to two beds side by side, unable to accommodate. Staff quite helpful especially Fernando, with good suggestions. Breakfast was reasonable, but not worth the cost.
Bottom line: Certainly does not worth the price – you get what you expect from a Parador for three times the price!! Pick something else, if you want a Parador, choose another in the Basque country.

Room Tip: Be mindful you will carry your own luggage on stairs...

A jewel, a treasure. An ancient, beautifully restored building into a few room 4 star hotel. Many of the rooms overlook the bay on the Atlantic that makes Spain from France. The town is lively, small, upscale, pleasant, with cheerful citizenry. The Parador sit on the hillside and overlooks a beautiful vista. The building is beautifully preserved, and reserved for the guests. Just outside the front doors is a small town square with just enough action, and the tourist info building is in the square. The info and advice we got at that spot made our stay even more perfect. Our room was spacious, the bathroom up to date and immaculate. The breakfast delicious. The common rooms spectacular. We are still stunned and very happy with our stay.

Room Tip: Pay for the superior rooms, or uupgrade to them if possible. The views are spectacular.

Wonderful setting in a castle above the town. The public spaces are stunning inside and the terraces overlooking the sea (and France) are amazing. If you are not fully mobile be warned - there are stairs (elevators don't go to all floors) and no-one to help with luggage. The bedrooms are unexceptional and a little tired looking and I agree that a view over the sea is essential. You are paying for the location and the building but that is worth a lot. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and taken in a wonderful ruined courtyard. We found lots of good, inexpensive tapas bars in town and it's worth going into the tourist info office across the square from the hotel as the staff are very helpful and informative.

Room Tip: Sea view a must

Stayed here on Amigos Points Offer. Superb location and architecture. Staff extremely helpful and waived the parking charge. No restaurant but made booking at one close by. Rooms could get hot in Summer - no air conditioning - but in October not a problem. One of the best Paradores I have stayed in.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view across to Hendaye

This Parador commands a fantastic view over the bay to Hendaye and France. As with all Paradors it is very comfortable. But the experience of being in a castle elevates it to a superb stay. The hotel is at the top of the old town and walking round the walled streets is a delight. The only downside is that there us no restaurant and not many others nearby. But we made the most of a bar meal sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine overlooking the sea. Would love to go back again.
