“Medieval Excellence”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

We have stayed at this Parador several times and it never disappoints. It is clean and very comfortable. Set in a medieval walled town, it is just beautiful. Although the Parador doesn't have a restaurant there are several just a stones throw away. We always go to the bar/restaurant opposite which s pretty good. Obviously this is not a cheap stay. The steps up from the car park are the only negative. We took friends who had never been there before and they loved it too. We thought breakfast was pretty good. Walk round the old part of town, take the lift at the back of the hotel down to the modern town and have a good explore. It is well worth the visit.

Room Tip: You have views over looking the bay which is magnificent or rooms over looking the inner courtyard w...

We stayed in Hondarribia in late May and can attest to the very rainy weather detailed in other recent reviews. We also agree that the luggage trek from the lower level parking lot to the lobby is no picnic...especially in a downpour. However, we found this Parador to be one of our favorites out of the five at which we stayed. The reception staff were informative and pleasant. Our breakfast buffet was delicious. Our room was just the right size with a modern bathroom and a view to die for. Even on a cloudy day, the panorama of the lower town, the seaside, and the tiled roofs of the French homes across the bay was beautiful. Yes, the bar only serves snacks, but we simply had drinks in the bar until the rain slowed, then hurried into town to eat at one of the extraordinary local restaurants. For eating (and shopping) Hondarribia is hard to beat. Please don't let some of these more negative reviews dissuade you from staying here. The four of us all agreed that we would rather spend a rainy day at the Parador de Hondarribia than a sunny day almost anywhere else.

Room Tip: Go for the ones with the view of the bay and France beyond.

This wonderful Parador is up a steep hill above the bay with France on the other side. The building was an old fortification and has been beautifully converted into an hotel. The inside courtyard is spectacular. Our room was on the ground floor and very comfortable and spacious. Although there is no restaurant, the café off reception offers a selection of snacks/sandwiches etc. There are a few restaurants in this area of the town including a very good one opposite the hotel. To the person who complained about there being no restaurants, take a very pleasant walk down to the main part of town which is colourful and fun, and you will find countless bars and places to eat at reasonable prices! The only negative point is that the breakfast buffet did not have as big a selection as one would expect for a hotel of this standard and price.

In a good setting our room faced the inner courtyard and was a reasonable size with comfortable beds. Breakfast was good and although no evening meal is provided the hotel recommended Sebastian’s restaurant nearby and we were not disappointed. There was convenient secure parking at the hotel.

We stayed here for a couple of nights at the end of May and, despite the unfriendly weather, we found Hondorribia a great location. Both the town and the Parador are well worth a visit. The Parador is an old castle in the historic part of this coastal town. Sit on the terrace in Spain and look over the bay to France. We found the service excellent with great recommendations for eating out. Restaurant Sebastián just a few yards away gave us one of the best meals of our holiday. Unlike some previous reviewers, our experience was first class.

What a shame-we had so looked forward to this. We knew there was no restaurant but at least thought there would be one open in the vicinity but guess what-closed. The room was good and the views great-the inside of the Parador spectacular but it stops there! As there was no restaurant open nearby we ate in the cafeteria that only has one hot dish to put in the micro-lasagne-but they didn't have any! A restaurant there would make a fortune and the young lady running the cafeteria and serving breakfast was a star and should be promoted. Having read other TA reviews for reception to tell me they had had no other complaints was untrue and demonstrates a staggering degree of complacency. The result a bill of 255 e and a cancellation of a return visit-final thought at that price ensure the ladies ground floor toilet has toilet paper!

Arrived in the pouring rain and found our way to the hotel via the street signs. You have to drive up a scary narrow single track lane which ends at a cul de sac and an iron gate. You announce yourself at the bell push and the gate opens to let you into a very small car park. You then lug your cases up a flight of open stairs in the pouring rain turn left into the square, and after another 30yards you are at the front door of the hotel. At reception you discover It costs 16euros a day to leave your car in the car park so we promptly took ours out and found a space way off in the town. Rooms are very comfortable but no restaurant we had to venture out in the pouring rain down to the town to find something to eat. Breakfast was ok. I am sue we would have enjoyed our stay more if it had stopped raining but certainly would not recommend this hotel for someone with mobility problems

Room Tip: Don't stay here unless you can carry your cases up and down a long steep flight of stairs as the...
