“Fine when you get there”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

This hotel is in the center of the old town and difficult to find when you arrive using GPS as it wants to send you up streets that are closed off. I parked my car and walked to the hotel and was told to turn off the GPS and follow their instructions. The car park (€ 16/ day) is a steep stairs climb below the entrance so it is best to find your way to the edge of the square in front of the hotel and unload the luggage. Room was small opening to the inside of the ruined inside of the castle. Noisy floors and water gushing early in the morning makes a sleep in not possible. There is a snack bar in the hotel but no restaurant so you find a place to eat which is difficult on a Sunday night because most places are closed. The old town is small and hilly. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Turn off your GPS when you arrive in town and follow signs to hotel.

Like every Paradores, the location and exceptional building what makes this place stand. The hotel has great views of the bay and situated in a square surrounded by old houses, restaurants, and cafes. The only caution - if you're traveling in summer - most rooms don't have any ventilation (i.e. a/c, etc.). We requested a fan for our room. Service is very good with very friendly staff. It's about 10-15mins walk to a street that has lots of tapas bars - highly recommend it (instead of a sit down dinner place in city).

This was our first stay in a parador and it did not disappoint. I couldn't get over that we were in a real 10th century castle overlooking the river/bay. Beautiful position in the centre of the old medieval town. The town itself has been beautifully preser Otved, but what makes it special is people are living in it, families included, which keeps it alive. We had a ground floor room overlooking the main terrace which was lovely. The bathroom was large and modern with beautiful marble tiles. Good shower. Wifi in main lounges. The only thing that could be improved was the beds - the mattresses were too hard for us. Staff friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a river/sea view. Also there are deals in midweek with the paradors.

This hotel is really cool. You feel like you're staying in an old castle - so it's really fun to look around. Unfortunately it's right smack in the middle of the square, which is a tourist haven. We booked the Double Bed Room with canopy... It was a big room/Suite with windows that faced the square so we experienced a lot of issues with noise. Also, there was no AC and we were there in August, so we had to leave both windows open, but again, there was a lot of noise coming in. One morning at about 7am they were building a stage right outside our window - for some upcoming concert/festival - and it was so terribly loud. Otherwise, the staff was really great and the town is super cute! We would recommend this hotel, but be careful about which room you choose.

This parador is in an old fortress. The building has historical significance and is located on the main square of Hondarribia. Our room was large and comfortable, with views over the harbor toward France. Breakfast in the central atrium was very nice.
Although we enjoyed our stay, I just don't feel that it was worth the exorbitant price. We have stayed in very nice places in France and Spain for less than half the cost of this parador. I would stay here only if money is no object.

Room Tip: If you spend the money to stay here, get a room with a view.

I stayed in a single room with a view of Hendaye, France across the bay. The room looked somewhat dated and I was quite dismayed to find a cigarette butt in an ashtray on the coffee table upon arrival. I also did not check my room invoice carefully at check-in and only later noticed that I had been assigned to a smoking room (!). Since the room did not smell of smoke and had a nice view, I did not ask to have my room changed. The hotel is a former fortress located centrally on a plaza within the walled confines of medieval Hondarribia. Although I felt my room was rather unremarkable in contrast to the historical significance of this hotel, the enclosed breakfast courtyard and lobby have architectural elements of the fortress still intact and made the stay worth it. Also, the view of the bay and of Hendaye from the terrace is quite spectacular. I had a comfortable, undisturbed stay at this hotel.

If you relish the experience of having stayed in a 10th-century castle and appreciate medieval architecture, the Parador Hondarribia is worth a stay. I highly recommend taking some time to check out elements such as the arches, the vaulted ceilings, wrought iron detailing, stone walls pocked by enemy cannons and various medieval weaponry displayed to get an appreciation for this hotel.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the bay, although the windows are quite narrow. Also, check the invoice c...

the best of the best. if you only do one parador, make it this one. this is a real kick. dating back to, i believe the 11th century, this fortress has been transformed into a top quality hotel. there is not one negative about this parador. be sure to eat breakfast in the atrium with the old walls right there and enough good food to satisfy the most fussy of tastes. the rooms are a good size and the beds are very comfortable. excellent location for san sebastian and st. jean de luz, even biarritz. enjoy a paseo in the new town of hondarribia and some of the local restaurants

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view toward the water. they tend to be bigger
