Peneda Hotel

We drove from the lovely little town of the Ponte de Lima along the N203 into the Parc National de Peneda y Geres. Driving across the dam at Lindoso and on into the park with it's glorious views of valleys and peaks is memorable indeed. The hillsides were clad in purple heather and golden broom.
The Peneda Hotel was an inviting, comfortable oasis, nestling beside the pilgrimage church. We spent a tranquil afternoon in the area, beside the stream and a very pleasurable evening in the restaurant with great food, wine and service.
The hotel used to be a pilgrims hostel and has been well converted into a comfortable hotel with big windows, easily opened for comfort.
We had a great nights' sleep and enjoyed a good healthy breakfast the rest of the drive out of the park the following day.

I really liked the staff. Very helpful and making you feel at home all the time. Very relaxing place and hotel. the living room with the fireplace is a must.

However, I strongly sugest you to avoid the restaurant. We had awful meal, didn't seem fresh at all ( fish ) and we had to go to the nearest restaurant ( 20kms) to have dinner because we would NEVER repeat the experience. Believe me.. I eat everywhere and Im not a michelin stars kind of guy.

Breakfast was great, in a nice room with jazz music.. inner peace.

About the room, the bed clothing is new but not the best quality.. it is too warm, like sauna and I couldn't sleep at all. No air conditioning.

Bottom line.. great staff and the worst restaurant in many many years. Would recommend it to everyone who brings food, because you don't have other options for 20kms from peneda..

Room Tip: A portable air conditioning unit, in summer.

This hotel, an old pilgrims' lodge, is in an incredible and unexpected location - next to an amazing church in the middle of the national park. One minute you are on an isolated road, the next you see the church, its balustraded staircase and the square and hotel.
It's been refurbished, simply but comfy and stylish. Very helpful staff, nice breakfast with fresh food and a good restaurant - we tried the fish dishes - recommend the cod and the rice with monkfish.
We went for a beautiful - if steep - walk up behind the hotel, to a still lake. Only saw two other people on the way there.

The area is amazingly beautiful, as we turned around the last bend and saw the church and the hotel in front of us it was like a glimpse of heaven. Upon arrival, the check-in person was very friendly and helpful and escorted us to our room without a hint of "tip please" about her. The room was well-appointed, much above what we would have expected from a *** hotel, very clean and roomy, with a lovely bathroom. The scenery through the window onto the courtyard in front, to the village and mountain beyond was just beautiful. The atmosphere was peaceful and the surroundings very quiet except for a group of more rambunctious local lads in a van out front for a while. We asked about hiking in the area and were given some rather poorly photocopied walks, but with a clear explanation and encouragement that the paths were well marked and an explanation of that. Indeed, the next morning up we went on a steep climb ending several hundred metres up at a lovely pond, then following an 8km trail that was indeed lovingly marked in with stone trail markers in a rough, rock strewn area. Without these markers, the wayfinding would have been difficult indeed.

The views and the solitude were amazing - no cars, no planes - just peace and quiet with some interesting flora, with wild horses and long-horned cows occasionally sharing the area with us. Later in the evening, the hotel restaurant provided well-cooked local cuisine, thoughtfully served. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We believe that all rooms will be similarly good.

We had a weekend in this hotel recently. The setting in the rough Peneda-Gerês national park (partly in Portugal, partly in Spain) dominated what would otherwise be just a nice weekend away. We were enormously lucky with the weather, which made the surrounding area look even more spectacular and we took advantage by taking several hikes in the immediate vicinity.
The hotel is clean, although the rooms and beds are smallish, almost as a reminder of its cloister origins. Overall, the hotel is fairly spartan but not unpleasant. It is so small that it cannot afford to retain personnel during the night, so you need to make your own way out between midnight and 08:30h. Personnel is very helpful, and the hotel has lots of useful information on the surrounding area. Breakfast is definitely so-so, with lots of room for improvement. Dinner is of great quality although some will find the limited choice perhaps less than ideal. We resolved that by going for a late lunch in Castro Laboreiro, a village further up in the same park; then there's no need for dinner afterwards. The market in front of the hotel during the weekend is interesting, with lots of people visiting the sanctuary for part of the day.
