Owner description: Caldeira Velha is a protected area classified as a Natural Monument of Sao Miguel Natural Park and a geosite of Azores UNESCO Global Geopark. This natural area is a place of secondary volcanism of the Fogo Volcano. It is possible to observe a fumarola and a hot spring that through a stream feeds two natural pools: one with a waterfall, whose water is about 26ºC and the small pool with water at 38ºC. As a protected area and a geosite, exists an Environmental Interpretation Centre with information about the volcanic origin of the islands, the geodiversity and biodiversity of the Azores, with emphasis on Caldeira Velha, and geothermal powerplant. You may ask for your tour at the Environmental Interpretation Centre of Caldeira Velha and enjoy a relaxing bath in the natural pools.

The caldeira is really beautiful to look at, a piece of paradise. We also went swimming, I'd say the water is around 28-30 degrees. The place is only 5 minutes from the road, so the whole visit will take you less than an hour.

The area is currently being developed into a genuine tourist attraction. Iread in the newspaper that construction is due to be completed by end of August 2013. Afterwards there's a visit center and the entrance will cost 2 Euros, which will totally be worth it. They estimate 350 visitors per day.

Thank steigers

You can have a really nice swim in there. There are changing rooms and toilets are on their way! They just need to improve the parking situation.

This place was a nice little place, where you could swim too. When I was there, they were building a little visitor's centre where you can change into bathing stuff. The area to swim is quite small though. The water isn't that hot either (in comparison to Furnas). Still it is nice to go here if you're in the area.

We went here while on a tour with Pedro of Belazorica Azores Tours on his Nordeste Tour- he is an excellent tour guide and shared much of the history of the place with us.
It is a quiet and lovely place. Until the new changing rooms are completed it is best to come in your suit and bring a towel. Because the local geothermic power plant has diverted some of the energy from the hot-water falls it is now more like a warm shower than a steamy falls. But on a coolish summer day it was wonderful! Tree ferns abound and the gingers were blooming along with the hydrangeas and agapanthus - flowering plants love Sao Miguel! There is also another pool that has boiling water in it (97C)- if you dared to swim it would be a once-only experience! But it bubbles merrily and is very interesting.
Evidently at one time the road (now a broad footpath) went up to the falls, but a huge, house-sized rock crashed into the parking lot there. They diverted the road and now the parking is at the bend of the road.
Do go and take a towel. It is a lovely place (and if a tour bus comes by just look into the forest of Tree Ferns until they leave, it does not take long).

Try and avoid the coach tours and maybe wait for the facilities to open in place of the open aspect changing facilities!
