Monte Velho Equoresort
Ranked #3 of 5 Arraiolos B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Monte Velho Equoresort is set on a beautiful rural area very close to Arraiolos. There are not many rooms which makes this place ideal for a romantic getaway, avoiding the fuss of large hotels with lots of guests. The owners, Margarida and Diogo, are very polite and friendly and try their best so that you can have the best experience possible. Monte Velho Equoresort has opened very recently and therefore (as usual), there are some things that need to be fine tuned so that all goes well, and therefore, the remarks made in this review aim to be constructive and provide the perspective of a guest wishing that the experience of future guests is even better.

Pros: the great location and views (really amazing); the friendliness of the owners (Margarida and Diogo) and staff (Mrs. Felicidade); complimentary bikes to stroll around the property and canoes to use on the property's lake; not many rooms.

Cons: pool despite not being large was not properly clean (especially by the end of the day) - I do realize this is a rural area and bugs will most certainly end up falling and swimming on the water, but having the pool cleaned at least by lunch time would help; meals are very pricey for what is offered; amenities were not sufficient and room should be duly stocked for two guests; room insonorization is poor (we could very easily hear the people in the room next to ours speaking) - which should be a concern when promoting a place as a place of silence and relaxation; napkins used for breakfast were not replaced for lunch and we were given the same (I could tell this since I recognized the stains); room cleanliness was OK (although there was dust in coffee cups - since probably these were not much used by guests).

Overall is was a good experience and if these matters were solved I would definitely come back.

Silence reigns.
The warm breeze, that rustles the leaves of the old holm oak by the pool, recognizing its intrusion, impishly recedes and subsides. The sentry granite rocks frown down in approval.
Silence reigns.
Welcomed and cherished as a known and dear old friend, its presence is felt, its weight acknowledged.
Here, life ushers in a different rhythm, an ancient rhythm, a forgotten rhythm.
Breathe.

In the context of modern architectural theory there is a concept, borrowed from classical Roman religion, known as genius loci.
A genius loci was the protective spirit of a place.
It has been reinterpreted, in architecture, as that which has profound implications in the interactions of place and identity, as translated by architecture, sociocultural identity and customs.
Here you feel the presence of one and witness the emergence of the other.

What has to be worked upon:

Mundane things such as lack of WiFi in the rooms of the new wing and outdoors.
Meals are somewhat on the expensive side and should reflect the prices from where they are sourced. Their counterparts at good local restaurants are cheaper but, then again, the shear bliss of hassle-free lunch or dinner in the hotel settings is hard to resist.

Room Tip: A new wing has been added recently and boasts three new rooms. I would definitely go for one of thes...
