As usual, there is a castle on top of the hill, above the village. This one is rather desolate, walls, a tower and -of course- a church. The main reasons to go to Arraiolos are the pretty town centre and the handicraft shops that make and sell the famous Arraiolos rugs.

Portugal is full of wonderful castles on hills. Arraiolos's is pretty much only a curtain wall which looks too neat not to have been restored. The only thing up there really is a church, but Portugal is full of them as well!

Since 300 BC that there are signs of human presence in the hill of São Pedro and in the beginning of the XIV century a castle was built. One of the few in circular plant of the world, it used to protect the city centre of Arraiolos.
However, soon people left the interior of the castle. It was considered cold, windy and unpleasant. Kings tried to give special benefits for the residents, but one by one all left.
When I was there it was exactly that, cold and windy, isolated and silent crowning the village of Arraiolos from the top. Not a single tourist under that greyish winter sky.
Some people believe there is a secret passage to the nearby convent, today, a hotel.
Inside of the castle there is just a XVI century church left.
