Pousada Castelo Alcacer do Sal
Ranked #1 of 3 Hotels in Alcacer do Sal

It is hard to resist the temptation to compare with the Pousada in Sagres since that is where we were travelling from. The rooms were larger and slightly more modern at Alcacer but there was little storage space and the quality and finish of the furniture was not great. The breakfast room was charming and the food quality slightly better than Sagres. We ate at the restaurant once - quality was good but the price a little high. But the building itself was beautiful and fascinating. Around every corner was an alcove or a room to rest and enjoy the peace. Every one unique. The architect must have had so much fun! Visit the museum that is, basically, an integral part of the hotel/castle. Marvellous! Compared to Sagres there were less staff and they were not quite so friendly mainly, I think, because they were less fluent in English.

My wife and I stayed for one night to break our drive from Porto to Lagos. The view across the Sado valley from this highpoint is really impressive and you can start to appreciate what made this such an important defensive position in days gone by.
Although the staff were very helpful & enthusiastic, they seemed to be slightly short handed, and this showed when we had dinner. The meal was very nice, but the presentation quality & the service were not quite up to our expectations for the price.
The museum displaying the archaeological history of the site is excellent.
Our overall impression was that Pousada management need to focus more resources on the hotel operation - about time for a makeover/upgrade. A bit expensive, but we're glad we went there!

Room Tip: What makes this place is the view across the river valley - we had to upgrade from a 'standard...

The hotel is in a first rate location set within a 15thc fort. Our bedroom was spacious and comfortable with an excellent bathroom. The breakfasts were ok but the dinners were poor .We had lunch there for one day and that was very expensive and of a low standard. The gardens our well cared for and there is an outside pool.

Room Tip: Most rooms should be alright ; it depends on whether you want a view over the valley or of the old...

This hotel is not really a castle experience because the hotel is really a building next to an historic site. The rooms are totally modern in a concrete block attached to the historic building. Rooms are good size, nicely decorated. Balcony is small and closed in too much. Wifi is only available in the bar. Cleaning is not good, we noticed lots of stains on the floor (inc bathroom) and bedrooms table, they appear to be only surface wiping things and not really cleaning.

Great size rooms. Lovely atmospheric location. Lovely breakfast. Helpful staff although not enough of them.
Peaceful good size pool, not many sun loungers. The museum underneath is well worth a visit. The hotel is at the top of a hill and it is a dark slightly scary walk but up from the town after dinner.

We visited several beutifull pousada's this summer in portugal but whiched we did not stay here. What a disappointment. The building is neglected as is the garden and swimming pool. It looks like former communist architecture . The fountain does not work. The restaurant area's are depressing. The rooms look as if they have never been redecorated since the 70ths, everithing is brown. Sitting on the balcony is like sitting in a cellar. We even had a luxury room. The service is terrible. They do not help you with the luggage when you check in. There is a nice courtyard but the restaurant does not serve outside but is set inside, what a mistake!! The staff of the restaurant is very unfriendly and unhelpfull. The food is ok, that is the only slightly positive thing. The rooms are to expensive compared to the beautifull other pousada's we visited.

Room Tip: please book another hotel

The building is absolutely amazing. I've been there last year in July for a week vacation and this year's experience was really great. Service has truly improved, especially in what breakfast is concerned. Very quiet and enjoyable hotel. Great vacation.

Room Tip: Poolside view; The sunset is amazing
