“A great restaurant just a step away from Lisbon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

From Lisbon, take the A2 going south and within 40 minutes take the exit to the beautiful city of "Alcacer do Sal". Near the riverside, you will find a perfect place to a traditional Portuguese meal. The restaurant "Hortelã da Ribeira" has a diversity of great meals. My favorites are "Canja de espinafres com garoupa", "Açorda de espinafres com Ameijoa" or "Bife de alcatra à Descoberta", but many more traditional meals are available. The staff is very friendly and the prices are great for this kind of quality ingredients and great cooking. The typical Alentejo herbs and condiments are used with mastery. The restaurant also has a great selection of wines (the affordable "Casal Freitas 2009" is perfect in both red and white flavours) and desserts something to die for. Truly recommend this restaurant.

“Tastes good, but small portions.”

Maybe it was bad luck but there was a hair in my codfish. The food tastes very good but it's not a lot in quantity.

“A riverside gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2012

We dined here while staying at the Pousada at Alcacer do Sal. The town itself is very pretty and restaurants abound, so it's hard to choose. We lucked out here, however, and enjoyed an exceptional meal on the terrace overlooking the River Sado. The "couvert" here included a delicious dish of the tenderest of octopus in a garlicky herby sauce with peppers and a spicy ewe's milk cheese. Our mains showed that the chef has his own twist on well known dishes - pork and clams were succulent, as was the juiciest -ever veal steak with asparagus "migas", accompanied by a perfectly dressed tomato salad. Our shared pud was the house special - a light-as-air concoction of meringue and syrup-soaked sponge. Which managed to be gorgeously sweet without being sickly. We were guided to an excellent local Alentejo red wine, and finished with a huge Macerias brandy. This restaurant has a great buzz, a beautiful view and first class service. And when I say first class, I mean that after serving a full restaurant at full stretch, the owner, realising it was too late for taxis, drove us home! A fab evening - highly recommended.

“The best place between Lisbon and the Algarve”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2012

We recently discovered this place and were very happy with it. Classic Portuguese food with a modern twist and local specialities at nice prices. Waterfront terrace so also nice in summer. In winter it can fill up easily.

“A tradition well kept”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2011

This is an offspring of one of the best restaurants in the region ("Hortelã da Ribeira"), now with a new location by the river, with a very pleasant terrace.
Cuisine is "modern Alentejo", very well done with fresh seasonal products. I'm not a vegetarian but their rice with spinach & pine nuts is out of this world. Good size portions with a fair price, friendly service and really delicious food. Do not miss this one if you are in Alcácer do Sal or near by.
